The Broadway revival of American Buffalo, performed at the in-the-round Circle in the Square Theatre, will continue to require audience masking through July 10, the production’s closing date.
In a statement released today, producers said, “Due to the close proximity of the audience to the actors as a result of the intimate size of the theater and the staging in the round, the production will continue to mandate audiences to wear masks in this space, despite the recent industry announcement of masking-optional across other Broadway theaters beginning July 1st.”
Earlier this week, the Broadway League, the trade organization representing theater owners and producers, announced that the mandatory audience mask requirement that’s been in place since theaters reopened last fall will be replaced in July with a mask optional plan. The policy will then be reviewed on a month-by-month basis.

The 2022 Tony Award nominations have been unveiled and, per usual, we have opinions! Susan Haskins joined us in a lively discussion to dissect this crop of nominees. We reveal what we think were the cruelest snubs, most pleasant surprises, and analyze how this set of nominees may change the Tony race as we head towards the June 12th ceremony. Watch the full video above.

The Drama Leauge announced the nominations for the 2022 Drama League Awards on Monday morning. Deneé Benton and André DeShields announced the nominees at this morning’s official event at The New York Library for the Performing Arts. The Drama League honors both Broadway and Off-Broadway productions in their annual celebration. Winners will be announced at the 88th Annual Drama League Awards, which will be held at the Ziegfeld Ballroom on Friday, May 20.
While the League doles out four production prizes, what makes them unique is their “Distinguished Performance” award. Up to fifty performers are nominated for the honor each year in a category that combines roles of all genders and sizes. An actor can only win this prize once in their career, and once they have prevailed they can not be nominated again. This year, forty three performers contend in the category.

Over two years after its slated pre-pandemic bow, the fourth production of David Mamet’s “American Buffalo” has arrived on Broadway. The nearly 50-year-old play takes place in a junk shop owned by Don (portrayed in this remounting by Laurence Fishburne), who has seller’s remorse over a valuable buffalo nickel and conscripts his assistant and protégé Bobby (Darren Criss) and, later, his buddy Teach (Sam Rockwell) to steal it back. Directed by Mamet’s frequent collaborator Neil Pepe, “American Buffalo” opened at the Circle in the Square Theatre on April 14 for a limited run.
Much of the luster of this staging has been dulled by the recent incendiary comments by playwright Mamet. The majority of the mixed reviews of “American Buffalo” reflect on this news, remark on the strong performances from the trio of actors, and question how well the text has aged. In a negative take, Alexis Soloski...

Offstage, and sometimes on, David Mamet can be infuriating and exasperating, as anyone who has witnessed his recent nonsensical, offensive media blitz can attest, and then along comes something like American Buffalo – possibly his greatest work, all due apologies to Glengarry Glen Ross – with a cast so in sync with the playwright’s “profane poetry” that for a couple hours it’s not impossible to put aside whatever it is Mamet thinks needs saying on Fox News these days.
Superbly performed by Laurence Fishburne, Sam Rockwell and Darren Criss, with director (and longtime Mamet collaborator) Neil Pepe finding every comic beat and threatening glare, American Buffalo – opening tonight on Broadway at the Circle in the Square Theatre – retains a vitality that eluded some recent equally starry revivals of works by Mamet’s bad-boy contemporaries.

The Broadway revival of David Mamet’s American Buffalo starring Laurence Fishburne, Sam Rockwell and Darren Criss – postponed from 2020 due to the Covid shutdown – will open at Circle in the Square Theatre on Wednesday, April 14, 2022, two years to the day after its original target.
Previews for the strictly limited 16-week engagement will begin the week of March 22. The play will be directed, as originally planned, by Neil Pepe.
Following the 2020 cancellation, lead producer Jeffrey Richards said the producing team intended to stage the production in spring 2021 but only if Covid vaccines were widely available. At the time – summer 2020 – Richards became the first Broadway producer to insist that a return to the stage would be predicated on vaccinations.
Broadway currently requires all audiences and theater workers to be vaccinated, a policy in place through at least the end of this year.

With no fewer than three acclaimed Broadway productions of plays written by Kenneth Lonergan to his credit – This Is Our Youth, Lobby Hero and The Waverly Gallery –actor Michael Cera seems the playwright’s ideal, go-to stand-in, an embodiment of the confusion, awkwardness, deadpan humor and sly charm that helps give Lonergan’s work its punch.
This Sunday, Cera adds another Lonergan work to his resume with a livestream table read of Hold On To Me Darling, a benefit project directed by Neil Pepe that will bring Cera together with two other Lonergan veterans: Mark Ruffalo, whose breakthrough performances arrived with the 1998 Off Broadway premiere of This Is Our Youth and, two years later, the film You Can Count On Me; and Gretchen Mol, who appeared in 2016’s Manchester By The Sea.

The Broadway revival of American Buffalo, orignally set to star Laurence Fishburne, Sam Rockwell and Darren Criss, and the Steppenwolf production of Tracy Letts’ The Minutes are targeting Spring 2021 openings, though producers say the development of a coronavirus vaccine is “essential” to the plans.
Both productions had been scheduled to open during Spring 2020 prior to Broadway’s coronavirus shutdown in March. The casts have not been confirmed.
In a statement, producers of both shows (they share lead producer Jeffrey Richards), said, “It is the intent to open these plays — both powerful, funny and relevant dissections of Americana — in the spring of 2021, on the exact dates they were scheduled to open in 2020. New York -- Mirroring the tough-luck lives portrayed in Hands on a Hardbody, the economics of Broadway proved too unforgiving for the show, which has posted a closing notice for Saturday April 13. Based on the 1997 documentary by S.R. Bindler, the musical has a book by Pulitzer winner Doug Wright (I Am My Own Wife), lyrics by Amanda Green, and an original score co-written by Phish frontman Trey Anastasio and Green. Neil Pepe directed the production, with an ensemble cast led by Keith Carradine and Hunter Foster. Like the film, the show chronicles an endurance contest held

Ever wonder what a musical composed by Phish frontman Trey Anastasio would sound like? On the off-chance that you have, Hands on a Hardbody should put any such wonder to rest. Set at a car dealership during a promotional competition of endurance, this musical is about as moving as the stationary Nissan pick-up truck it's centered around.
Seeking to represent a portrait of America, the creators of this musical have instead captured a snapshot of one isolated, little corner of a vast and diverse nation and tried sticking it in a frame far too large for its dimensions.
Cast members are to be given credit for making do with the little they're tendered. Dale Soules offers some personality as the hardscrabble Janis, as does Hunter Foster as the jaded and jeering Benny. Both Soules and Foster give the most-dimensioned performances of the production, successfully overcoming the thin qualities of these book-written archetypes.

An odd, homemade blend of Garrison Keillor and Jackass, as filtered through an early Errol Morris-like lens, S.R. Bindler’s 1997 documentary Hands on a Hard Body is now having one of the most unexpected independent film second lives ever. Hands on a Hard Body the film has led to Hands on a Hardbody the Broadway musical, starring Keith Carradine, directed by Neil Pepe, with a book by Pulitzer-Prize winner Doug Wright and a score by Phish’s Trey Anastasio and Amanda Green. It opened at the Brooks Atkinson Theater last week, and Charles Isherwood wrote in the New York Times, “…this …...

A new musical about a car dealership contest in Texas might not be what you would expect from Phish frontman Trey Anastasio. In Hands on a Hardbody, there are no 15 minute guitar-heavy, lyrics-free, pot-fueled run-on jams, just a collection of stories about the people competing in a small town contest to win a pickup truck, focusing on 10 characters with their hands firmly fixed on the Nissan in question. Below, Anastasio and lyricist/co-composer Amanda Green (Bring It On: The Musical) discuss the show, which opens on Broadway this Thursday, and preview some of the songs from the new musical.

A new Broadway season is about to begin and, with it, new life has been brought to my posts. After over 900 posts, 50 comments, over 325 Tony nominees and over 75 winners in the two-and-a-half years I blogged independently about the Tony Awards, I am proud to be joining the team at ScottFeinberg.com.
Without any further ado, I would like to begin with a look ahead at the Broadway shows that will be coming up this year. I have made this list as comprehensive as I could given what information is available but, as is often the case, there is much more data available right now about the fall season (September through the winter holidays) than the spring season (Christmas through the Tony Awards in June) on Broadway. I will update this post with more details as information becomes available.
