Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is not going anywhere anytime soon. The sci-fi series has already been renewed for a fourth season ahead of its season three release. Paramount+ previously renewed the series for a third season ahead of its season two premiere in March 2023. The end of animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks was also announced.
The Star Trek: Strange New Worlds series, which stars Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Babs Olusanmokun, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Jess Bush, Melissa Navia, and Bruce Horak, follows Captain Christopher Pike (Mount) and his crew aboard the USS Enterprise, before Kirk's time as Captain in the original Star Trek series.

In the "Star Trek: Prodigy" episode "Mindwalk", the crew of the U.S.S. Protostar has learned that their ship is infected with an insidious computer virus planted by the evil Diviner (John Noble). It seems that the virus can be spread through mere communications channels, meaning Dal (Brett Gray), Gwyn (Ella Purnell), and the rest of the Protostar teens can't explain who they are to the grumpy Admiral Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) pursuing them in a massive vessel called the U.S.S. Dauntless. If the virus infects a ship, its systems will be rewired to automatically attack other Federation vessels. The Diviner aims to destroy the Federation before a cataclysmic future event occurs; the Diviner, naturally, is a time traveler.
With the Dauntless on their tail, Dal realizes that he can communicate with Janeway. Dal, it seems, has some mild and latent telepathic abilities, and reaches out to communicate directly to Janeway's brain.

“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” currently in production on its third season, has been renewed by Paramount+ for Season 4. Meanwhile, “Star Trek: Lower Decks,” the first animated “Star Trek” comedy, will conclude its run on the streamer with its fifth season, which will debut in the fall.
“Strange New Worlds” — set in the years when Capt. Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) commanded the USS Enterprise, and featuring younger versions of several legacy characters, including Spock (Ethan Peck), Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) and Kirk (Paul Wesley) — has been a fan favorite since it premiered on Paramount+ in 2022. Season 2 of the series, which included a musical episode and a crossover episode with “Lower Decks,” made Nielsen’s chart of the 10 most-watched streaming original series over multiple weeks.

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" might be considered the most lighthearted show in the vast canon of "Trek." It's a series that returned to an episodic structure, allowing its stories to conclude at the end of an hour, rather than stretching them across an entire season -- and sometimes well past their breaking point. The old-world structure has allowed the showrunners to experiment with genre in ways not previously tried on "Star Trek." One episode may be a body-swap comedy, while the next is a terse horror tale. There are a few steely, soul-crushing wartime dramas sprinkled throughout, but their headiness is leavened by lightweight time-travel stories, party-animated crossovers, and an episode in which Spock becomes a human and eats too much bacon. The most notorious "Strange New Worlds" episode is likely "Subspace Rhapsody," a full-on musical.

There's meeting your favorite celebrity, and then there's meeting Spock. Though we all understand on some level that actors Leonard Nimoy, Zachary Quinto, and Ethan Peck aren't actually the beloved pointy-eared first officer "Star Trek" fans know and love, well, humans aren't really that logical, are we?
"Star Trek" has a long history of inspiring passionate fan reactions, and Peck, who plays the half-Vulcan, half-human fan-favorite character in "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is certainly getting a taste of them. In a cover story for Variety about the future of the Paramount-owned franchise, Peck spoke about what it's been like adjusting to playing Spock and described fan encounters as a sort of ritualistic experience. "When I'm meeting fans, sometimes they're coming to be confirmed, like I'm kind of a priest," the actor told a reporter while in the middle of filming season 3 of the excellent Paramount+ prequel series.

A Variety cover story about the future of "Star Trek" includes plenty of exciting updates about the future of the series, but it's also just a trivia treasure trove for "Trek" fans -- including the ones who work on the shows. "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" stars Anson Mount and Ethan Peck both noted how surreal their jobs are, while Mount also revealed that they get to go to work on a set named after part of a starship.
"Sometimes we call it The Holodeck," Mount told Variety when describing the massive augmented reality walls (similar to those used by Industrial Light & Magic's The Volume) that turn the set into a virtual-physical hybrid space. Variety's Adam B. Vary observed that Mount "[couldn't] help but break into a boyish grin" when he talked about the Ar walls they call The Holodeck, as if it's yet another childhood dream come true. Alex Kurtzman looks exactly how you’d expect someone to look at the end of a five-year-mission for Starfleet: relaxed, confident, and ready to bring the ship home. At least, that’s the impression he gives when he, showrunner Michelle Paradise, and stars Sonequa Martin-Green and David Ajala talk with Den of Geek about the upcoming fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery during SXSW 2024. You almost can’t tell this show has faced many trials and tribulations across its seven years on the air.
“It’s been an incredible ride for us,” Kurtzman declares during our chat, but quickly adds, “It was an incredibly bumpy first year.” Only a calm man can use words like “incredibly bumpy” to describe Discovery‘s inaugural season in 2017, the first new Star Trek television series since Enterprise went off the air in 2005. The production of "Star Trek: Discovery," as Trekkies likely know, was notoriously troubled. The original concept for "Discovery," as envisioned by TV mastermind Bryan Fuller, was a "Star Trek" anthology show wherein every season would take place in a different era in "Trek" history. The first season was to take place shortly before the events of the original 1966 "Star Trek" series, while the second would be concurrent with the original series. The third season would overlap with "Star Trek: The Next Generation," set a century later, and the fourth would take the series into the distant future.
"Discovery" followed this mold, but only kind of. The first season of "Discovery" did indeed precede the original series, while its second interacted directly with a young Spock (Ethan Peck) and the pre-Kirk USS Enterprise. Then, thanks to a time portal, the USS Discovery was thrown forward in time almost a millennium, and...

We're sad to report the passing of Canadian actor Kenneth Mitchell at the too-young age of 49. His death was confirmed in an X/Twitter post (made via the account previously belonging to Mitchell himself) which eulogized him. Mitchell is survived by his family, including his parents, his siblings, and his wife, fellow actor Susan Pratt, and their children Lilah and Kallum (a GoFundMe has been set up for Mitchell's family by friends).
Mitchell built up a wide TV resume during the 2000s and 2010s. He didn't have many starring roles, granted, but he was in the main cast of the cult classic post-apocalyptic series "Jericho." Mitchell kept racking up guest roles on every major procedural series under the sun: "NCIS," "Grey's Anatomy," "Criminal Minds," "Castle" -- the list goes on.

In March 2023 it was announce that the upcoming fifth season of "Star Trek: Discovery" was to be its last. This is something of a major moment for modern "Star Trek," as "Discovery" was seen as the bold return of the franchise to the small screen for the first time in 12 years. It was also the flagship show on Paramount's brand-new streaming service, CBS All Access, now called Paramount+.
The show will last one more season, and "Star Trek" will be left in the hands of its remaining programs "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" and "Star Trek" Lower Decks." It's planned "Section 31" series was transformed into a movie, and "Star Trek: Prodigy" was also recently canceled, graciously allowed a second and final season before leaving the airwaves. There is currently a "Starfleet Academy" series in the works.

J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" reboot shook up the classic characters it depicts, and one of the biggest changes was turning Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Nyota Uhura (Zoe Saldana) into lovers. In the first movie, this is a bit of a bait and switch; there's some early sexual tension between Uhura and Kirk (Chris Pine), and she's even the first of the future Enterprise crew he meets when they flirt at a bar. Nyota, though, only has eyes for the Vulcan (like plenty of Trekkie fangirls) and the relationship endures in the two sequels, "Into Darkness" and "Beyond."
Now, this isn't a totally unprecedented pairing. There are a few suggestive moments between Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) in early episodes of "Star Trek: The Original Series." In "The Man Trap," Uhura tries to strike up a conversation with Spock, and in "Charlie X," she sings while Spock plays his lute.

The respectable Saturn Awards were first launched in 1973 by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films, and have been presented annually ever since.
"Star Trek: The Next Generation" has won multiple Saturns in the past, notably winning Best Genre Series twice during its initial run. Additionally, Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner won Saturns for their acting, playing Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Lieutenant Commander Data respectively. Frustratingly, no other member of the show's venerated ensemble won Saturns for their performance.

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" has brought back some classic characters from the franchise by recasting them with new actors. Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) is finally helming his own show, with Spock (Ethan Peck) and Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) serving in his crew. Future Captain Jim Kirk (Paul Wesley) has become a recurring face, while the season 2 finale, "Hegemony," introduced a young Montgomery Scott (Martin Quinn). But if actor John Billingsley has his way, Doctor Phlox could return in "Strange New Worlds" without the need for recasting.
Billingsley played Phlox on "Star Trek: Enterprise" — he was the chief medical officer of the Nx-01, the first Starfleet spaceship named "Enterprise." A Denobulan, Phlox looked human-ish (except for the serrated ridges on the side of his head), but his alien anatomy was, well, rather alien indeed.

Production on the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is currently underway, and one former Star Trek cast member has an idea of how they could be brought back. John Billingsley played Dr. Phlox on Star Trek: Enterprise, and although Strange New Worlds takes place a hundred years after Enterprise, he notes that nothing has been established regarding the lifespans of Denobulans.
“I was on the strike line and some of the Strange New Worlds guys were coming up and saying ‘How long do you think Denobulans live?’” Billingsley told TrekMovie. “I said ‘Long. Long, long, long. Definitely long enough to be on your show if that’s what you’re getting at.’ So who knows? I mean, I would happily come back. And I figure, hell, even if I’m dead, my son Phlox Jr. is still around, and he is the spitting image of his old pop.

"Comparison is the thief of joy," I read once on a cross-stitch, and it's probably true, but when it comes to our favorite TV shows, comparison is also very fun. Which of the year's biggest shows were worth the hype? What hidden gems slipped between the streaming cracks? And – crucially for a medium that's defined by its ability to tell bite-sized, serialized stories – which show aired the best episode of 2023?
There is, of course, no objective answer to this question, but it's worth exploring. In 2023, TV worked overtime to get our attention, packing episodes with A-list guest stars, yanking forcefully on viewers' heartstrings, and pushing past its own established boundaries with sharp and captivating filmmaking choices. Not everything TV tried this year worked, but a surprising amount of it did.
A trio of incredible episodes top this year's list, hours that stand out among their contemporaries and embolden their respective genres.

“We beat Taylor Swift for 10 minutes!” Celia Rose Gooding cheers, referring to the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds musical episode album. With the end of the year comes the perfect time to take a look back at some of 2023’s highlights, among which is, of course, this first in Star Trek history: that musical episode. TV Insider had Christina Chong (La’an), Gooding (Uhura), and Ethan Peck (Spock) do just that in the video interview above. Spock was the one to kick it off, with “Status Report” featuring the crew, confused, as they sang what would in other circumstances be dialogue. “It was an honor to sing first,” Peck, who was the most hesitant about the musical, says. “I was very surprised, but it kind of makes sense because Spock would be the one you wouldn’t expect to sing first.” Adds Gooding, “They reminded us where we are in our headspaces.

David Arquette, Ethan Peck, Katrina Bowden and Gianni Capaldi are saddling up to join the cast of “Unholy Trinity.” The Western adventure, which received an interim agreement to go into production during the actors strike from SAG-AFTRA, has begun filming at Yellowstone Ranch in Montana. It is directed by Richard Gray and stars the previously announced Pierce Brosnan and Samuel L. Jackson.
The movie unfolds during the 1870s and explores themes of vengeance, concealed truths and hidden treasures, according to its official synopsis. Enterprise – under the command of Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) – as they explore uncharted territories and encounter new life and civilizations.
The streaming service was so confident that the Star Trek: Discovery spinoff would be a hit with fans that they ordered a second season months before the series premiered. Then, in March 2023, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was renewed for season 3, several months in advance of the June 2023 season 2 premiere.

This is Day 130 of the WGA strike and Day 57 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
There was fan convention energy on the picket line outside Paramount offices in Manhattan on Friday as more than 100 people marched in a Star Trek-themed rally put on by the Writers Guild of America East.
The first of two “United We Trek!” pickets in New York and Los Angeles drew a show runner and actors from spinoffs of the original Paramount-owned franchise, a Star Trek novelist, and a contingent of Trekkies marching in Starfleet garb.
On another hot morning in the late-summer heat sink of Times Square, picketers incorporated Star Trek catchphrases into chanted refrains such as “Live long and prosper/We want their offer” and “Paramount, let’s engage/We want a fair wage.”

"Star Trek" sure knows how to celebrate in style. Star Trek Day usually tends to be a huge deal, but this year has all the makings of a can't-miss event for Trekkies both old and new. We recently brought you the news of all the planned festivities and how to enjoy them either online or even in person, but that's not all that this venerated franchise has hidden up its sleeve. Today, there's been another noteworthy announcement that will cater specifically to fans of the classic, bizarre, and oh-so-entertaining "The Animated Series." We've known that "Star Trek" would be marking September 8, 2023 on the calendar as the 50th anniversary of the animated cartoon, but here's one more added wrinkle to the celebration.
Paramount has officially revealed that the first of five total "very Short Treks" will premiere on this year's Star Trek Day, which will pay homage to the franchise's animated...

The final episode of the second season of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," called "Hegemony", took place at a remote human colony called Parnassus Beta and involved a violent border dispute between the U.S.S. Enterprise and a species of evil reptiles called the Gorn. The colony is on a contested planet, and the Gorn are eager to exterminate the human "pests." The Enterprise charges to the rescue, and the bulk of the episode is action sequences, starship battles, and hand-to-hand combat. Spock (Ethan Peck) murders a Gorn by stabbing it in the skull. On a mere visceral level, it's terribly exciting.
The episode ends with the Enterprise crew back on board the ship after a stressful conflict below. Captain Pike (Anson Mount) has received orders from Starfleet Command to leave the colony behind and get out of the Gorn's way. The order came, however, right when Pike received...

Say what you will about the "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" musical episode (and people have certainly said a lot), but whether you loved "Subspace Rhapsody" or thought it missed the mark, it's hard to deny the emotional truth of the experimental hour. Whether we were listening to budding comms officer Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) singing about the loss that's underscored her career or witnessing Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) tell Spock (Ethan Peck) she's eager to leave for her big research fellowship, the tunes of "Subspace Rhapsody" allowed us to overhear the innermost thoughts of the Enterprise crew in true musical tradition.
Musical episodes always tend towards campiness, and while I think "Strange New Worlds" was mostly saved from as much by its undercurrent of earnest emotion, the episode still allows for some purposely silly concepts -- like when the Klingons suddenly start singing a K-pop-style boy band number. In an interview with TrekMovie.

Spoilers for "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" follow.
It's been over a week since season 2 of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" wrapped. I'd call the season a success; it built upon the rock-solid first season and swung further toward the fences. "Strange New Worlds" season 2 was daring, goofy, and pushed "Star Trek" into new frontiers while capping off with a bold cliffhanger right out of "The Next Generation."
While the premiere is at least a year away, it was confirmed back in March 2023 that "Strange New Worlds" has been renewed for a third season. The cast has already floated some ideas; Rebecca Romijn (Commander Una-Chin Riley/Number One) wants an episode showing how her character met Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), for example. But it's not just the show's cast and crew with hopes and dreams for season 3.
After season 1 ended, I wrote a list of what /Film wanted out...

This Star Trek: Strange New Worlds article contains spoilers.
Prequel cameos are always tricky storytelling gambits. When done right, they can thrill fans with a shiver of recognition. When done wrong, it can feel cheap and sentimental, like almost everything with baby Leia in Obi-Wan Kenobi. But against all odds, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has managed to stay on the right side of this balancing act.
Casting delightful actors such as Celia Rose Gooding and Jess Bush has allowed showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers to explore characters who never really got their due in The Original Series. Ethan Peck and Paul Wesley manage to pay homage to Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner while forging their own takes on Spock and Kirk. Add to that number Montgomery Scott, the beloved engineer who made his Snw debut in the season two finale, “Hegemony.”

For me, 2020 was already a rather stressful year before the Covid lockdowns went into effect for reasons unrelated to the pandemic. Even as misfortunes both personal and professional piled up throughout the months that followed, the virus, funnily enough, was never directly to blame for my woes. Not that I can really complain; I certainly had a far easier go of it in 2020 than other people, especially when it came to my mental health. My years of working remotely and being a borderline hermit were finally paying off!
You could say my experience was a bit like George Clooney's in "The Midnight Sky." Clooney, who also directed the 2020 film, stars as Augustine Lofthouse, a scientist, and the lone person holed up at an Arctic research station that's been evacuated in the wake of a mysterious global catastrophe that's left most of the Earth's surface uninhabitable in the year 2049. Back in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 1, Spock’s (Ethan Peck) half-brother, Sybok, was mentioned and glimpsed. But since then, he has yet to show up (and all of Season 2 is now streaming on Paramount+), though clearly, that was a tease for him to be a (future) major problem. “It is something we have been discussing. We had a lot to do this season. We couldn’t do everything we wanted to. And sometimes when you’re only doing 10 episodes, you don’t quite get to do every story that you want to, but everything we set up, we set up for a reason, is what I will say,” executive producer Henry Alonso Myers tells TV Insider. But bringing Sybok back in Season 2 wasn’t necessarily the plan, adds executive producer Akiva Goldsman. Rather, it’s one of those “setups that we know we want to pay off over time.

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses major plot developments for the Season 2 finale of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” currently streaming on Paramount+.
The second season of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” took a large number of big swings: Spock (Ethan Peck) becoming human for a time; an alternate universe James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) romancing La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) in 21st century Toronto; the crossover episode with the animated series “Star Trek: Lower Decks”; and the musical episode featuring a Klingon boy band group.
The Season 2 finale, “Hegemony,” attempts to top them all. The terrifying reptilian aliens from Season 1, the Gorn, return with a vengeance, decimating a brand new human colony that the Gorn believe falls within their territory. That would be trying enough for Capt. Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and the crew of the Enterprise to deal with, but the Gorn also happened to attack the colony while Pike’s girlfriend,...

The season 2 finale of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," called "Hegemony," in attempting to leave the season on a high note, falls back into comforting, familiar territory.
For a series that has largely -- especially during this season -- taken numerous big narrative swings, it's almost disappointing to see it rely on traditional "high stakes" action storytelling for its finale. Why just last week, "Stange New Worlds" was a musical. A few weeks prior, animated characters from "Star Trek: Lower Decks" were sucked into live-action. There was a fun time travel plot, a harrowing tale of war trauma, an old-fashioned farce, and an episode where prejudice was put on trial. The varying tonal textures and classical "Star Trek" stories have kept "Strange New Worlds" one of the best Trek shows in decades.
But for "Hegemony," the showrunners regressed into slick special effects, action, death, and fights against an alien menace.

“Picketing Disney Is More Fun Than Writing a ‘Star Wars’ Movie”: Scribes Mark 100 Days of the Strike
Resolve and solidarity were the common refrains Wednesday as writers marked the grim 100-day milestone in the Writers Guild of America’s ongoing strike against Hollywood’s studios and streamers. Joined on the picket line by the similarly striking performers union, SAG-AFTRA, caffeinated scribes celebrated the two unions’ collective resolve on the day that WGA negotiating committee co-chair Chris Keyser called “an anniversary of shame for the AMPTP.”
Eric Robbins (Star Trek: Discovery), the lot coordinator at Disney, said the atmosphere Wednesday was positive, noting that the 100-day marker “rejuvenated and really invigorated” writers to return to the picketing, which he said “pumped a lot of lifeblood into the line.” After Friday’s meeting between the WGA and AMPTP yielded no signs of when both sides would return to the bargaining table, he said scribes have “as much passion and as much solidarity as we did on day one.”

After a blockbuster musical episode, “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” is closing out its second season in much more serious fashion. The sci-fi series’ season finale “Hegemony” will pit the crew of the USS Enterprise against a classic enemy of old. And in a first look at the finale, exclusively shared with IndieWire, it’s revealed that said enemy is one of the most dangerous in the “Star Trek” galaxy: the Gorn.
The Gorn, a race of hostile reptellian humanoid aliens, first appeared in “Arena,” one of the most iconic episodes of Gene Roddenberry’s science fiction series. In “Strange New Worlds,” the species appeared twice in the show’s first season: “Memento Mori,” where a Gorn military ship attacks the Enterprise, and “All Those Who Wonder,” where hatchlings from the species caused the death of Enterprise engineer Hemmer (Bruce Horak). Keeping it in the family is very much a Hollywood tradition at this point, and in the 21st century acting families are still thriving. Whether it be Cuba Gooding Jr.’s son Mason joining the cast of the last two Scream movies, Lily-Rose Depp leading The Idol, Maya Hawke becoming a fan favorite in Stranger Things, or Ethan Peck (grandson of Gregory) roaming the bridge of the Enterprise in Star Trek, there’s always a new generation of nepo babies lurching from crib to screen.

By the time Jonathan Frakes directed the recent surprise release crossover episode of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," the actor was no stranger to stepping behind the camera for the sci-fi franchise. In fact, the actor best known for playing William T. Riker on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" has been directing episodes of "Star Trek" ever since 1990, when he helmed a season three episode of Tng in which Data (Brent Spiner) creates an android "child" called Lal.
In a wide-ranging retrospective with Variety, Frakes looked back on those early directorial efforts, sharing some memories about key episodes of the franchise. When it comes to his directorial debut, though, he mostly remembers realizing just how rowdy he and his costars could be on set. "Our cast, as you probably know, is notoriously rambunctious," Frakes told Variety. "I was, for better or for worse, one of the leaders of that kind of behavior on the set.
