One of actor Devon Sawa’s first feature film roles was in Christina Ricci’s Casper. But the actor recently shared that he might not have even been in the film if it wasn’t for Ricci’s help.

Sawa has become a prominent actor in his own right. He’s grown his star-power through features like Final Destination and The Exorcism of Molly Hartley. He’s recently returned to the horror genre by appearing in SyFy’s Chucky series. But his feature film career started with the 1995 movie Casper, which was based on the classic animated television show. Sawa famously made an appearance as the friendly ghost in his human form. And it was all thanks to his co-star Ricci.

A certain adorable and friendly ghost is getting his own live-action series.
According to Variety, "Casper" is currently in development over at Peacock. The Harvey Comics character and animated TV personality made the leap (float?) to a feature film in 1995, featuring the voice of Malachi Pearson and the physical form of a young Devon Sawa. In director Brad Silberling's film, a young girl (Christina Ricci) moves into a haunted mansion with her widowed father (Bill Pullman), a paranormal therapist who is trying to contact his late wife. I was a little past the target age when that came out, but from what I know of it, it...

A new live-action series about Casper the Friendly Ghost is in development at Peacock, Variety has learned.
The potential series hails from writer and executive producer Kai Yu Wu, with UCP and DreamWorks Animation set to co-produce.
The series is described as a horror/adventure show that reimagines the origin of Casper in a coming-of-age story that explores what it means to be alive. When a new family arrives in the small town of Eternal Falls, Casper finds himself entangled in a mystery uncovering dark secrets that have been buried for over 100 years.
Wu has previously written for shows such as “Hannibal” at NBC as well as “The Flash” at CW and “Deception” at ABC. Most recently, she created the Netflix series “The Ghost Bride.”
She is repped by UTA and Underground.

Casper the Friendly Ghost is coming back to television in a brand new incarnation reminiscent of Riverdale‘s darker interpretation of the Archie comics. Peacock is developing Casper, a live-action, horror/adventure series, which reimagines the origin of Casper in a coming-of-age story that explores what it means to be alive.
Set in high school, Casper is written/executive produced by The Ghost Bride head writer Kai Yu Wu. In it, when a new family arrives in the small town of Eternal Falls, Casper finds himself entangled in a mystery uncovering dark secrets that have been buried for over 100 years.
Casper is produced by UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, and DreamWorks Animation.
Casper originated as an affable translucent ghost featured in a slew of animated movies by Famous Studios released between 1945 and 1959. That’s when the character was acquired by Harvey Comics, which had published Casper comics since 1952. Since then,...

Guillermo del Toro’s gothic thriller “Crimson Peak” doesn’t hit theaters until this October. Of course, that means all the merchandising will be reaching retailer shelves in September. Which means the promotional blasts are going out right about…now. You can see where this is headed. Remember the eerie feeling the “Crimson Peak” trailer evoked? Like if “Casper” had been meant for an adult audience and not pre-teen girls who inexplicably found themselves crushing on the voice of Malachi Pearson and the body of Devon Sawa. In said trailer, several supernatural phenomena appear. Including one mysterious, black-clad ghost person creeping on Mia Wasikowska. The trailers are very careful to hide this ghost’s face. We see her hands… …and her feet… …but never any kind of defining characteristics outside of obvious tattered mourning clothes. Warning: “Crimson Peak” Spoiler Beyond This Point. Well Funko — creators of the ubiquitous Pop!Vinyls...

Hollywood has been feeling nostalgic recently with Yogi Bear and The Smurfs coming next year. Now, What’s Playing is getting word that Universal is looking to reboot Casper the Friendly Ghost, and bring it back to the big screen rather than the small screen. Classic Media, who now own the rights, have been talking to Amblin Entertainment and Universal Pictures about making a new live-action film. Of course, releasing the film in 3D has also talked about, but at this point it’s only talk.
A live-action film was first released in 1995 with Christina Ricci, Bill Pullman, and Malachi Pearson as the voice of Casper. A spin-off film titled Casper: A Spirited Beginning was then released Dtv, with several films following. In 2009, Casper and The Spectrals was released as a reboot of the series, and if this film will likely follow suit. That’s if it gets off the ground.
