Although the trip down The River was cut short just as the series was getting good, the DVD release of the Complete First Season capture the magic of the eight episodes and features enough bonus material to please fans of the short-lived series. From Oren Peli (director of Paranormal Activity) and executive produced by Steven Spielberg, the series was shot in the "found footage" style of filming and a premise of a show within a show set on the mysterious and magical Amazon River. The series featured Bruce Greenwood, Joe Anderson, Leslie Hope, Eloise Mumford, Paul Blackthorne, Thomas Kretschmann, Daniel Zacapa, Shaun Parkes, Paulina Gaitan, Scott Michael Foster, Katie Featherston, and Lee Tergesen. Chicago – I had some notable problems with ABC’s “The River,” saying in my review of the series premiere, “…while the show has effective moments of horror, they never quite build the way you want them to in a cohesive piece due to the creators feeling the need to get at least one major scare between every break.” Watching where the show went with the first season DVD, hitting stores this week, I stand by my criticisms (I have problems with every episode) but I kind of wish that the creators had been given time to iron out their kinks. The fact is that there simply isn’t enough programming on network TV that one could call daring and while I think “The River” was flawed it was undeniably unlike anything else in your DVR.

The search is truly over for the Magus crew. ABC has cancelled The River, their mid-season thriller series, after just one season of eight episodes.
The River follows the search for Emmet Cole (Bruce Greenwood), an adventurer, TV host, father and husband who disappeared while on an expedition deep in the uncharted waters of the Amazon River. Others in the cast include Joe Anderson, Leslie Hope, Eloise Mumford, Paul Blackthorne, Thomas Kretschmann, Daniel Zacapa, Shaun Parkes, and Paulina Gaitan.
The TV series had an okay premiere, registering a 2.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 8.35 million viewers. Unfortunately later episodes didn't do nearly as well and towards the end of its short season it went as low as a 1.3 in the demo with 4.09 million.

So after my screening of Safe House last night I journeyed home to watch ABC's two-hour premiere of "The River". After laying out my hopes for it yesterday I wondered if I would be able to give it a fair shake or if I was expecting too much. As it turns out, it's not too bad and I will continue watching, but there are definite causes for concern. First off, for those that didn't watch or don't know what it's about, the big selling point is that it comes from Paranormal Activity writer/director Oren Peli who helped come up with the story with Paranormal Activity 2 screenwriter Michael R. Perry, Michael Green (Green Lantern) and Zack Estrin ("Prison Break", "Tru Calling"). As you would expect from such a teaming, it's roots in the "found footage" style of story-telling are definitely there, but it all seems a bit arbitrary, but...

Interview - Joe Anderson Talks The River
The River chronicles the life and disappearance of famed explorer Dr. Emmet Cole who turned his life, and the life of his family, into a weekly TV series combing exotic locales aboard his boat “The Magus” for the ‘magic’ that he was convinced existed in nature. Now missing for six months after a mysterious solo quest to find ‘real’ magic, Cole has been declared dead. Is he? When Cole’s rescue beacon is activated deep in the Amazon River, Cole’s family, and a TV crew, embarks on a mission down a forgotten tributary hoping to find Cole alive, along the way they find a trail inhabited by terrifying supernatural forces and mounting evidence that Dr. Cole’s journey turned into an apt representation of Edgar Allen Poe’s ominous proclamation: "be careful what you wish for, lest it come true."

Chicago – Two hours of ABC’s found footage horror drama tonight, “The River,” from Executive Producer Steven Spielberg, should at least do one thing for the show — weed out those not interested in following it long-term. Personally, I think it would have been wiser to lower viewers into this bizarre body of water slowly instead of with back-to-back episodes as the double dip amplifies the show’s flaws instead of leaving them wanting more. Having said that, network TV viewers complain all the time about how the titans of television aren’t willing to take risks any more. “The River” is a risk and deserves credit purely for originality. The execution needs to improve if they want to turn that credit into anything more substantial.

When a famous television explorer goes missing in the Amazon, his wife and son vow to find out what really happened to him. Funded by the same reality TV company that provided the financial backing for Dr. Cole prior to his disappearance, the expedition becomes a tug-of-war for exclusive, full-access to the family’s grief and the increasing uncertainty every step of the way. But the farther they venture into the deep, treacherous jungle, the more everyone begins to realize that this journey is not just about a missing man — but what he found out there.
Tensions continue to rise as a few jumpy cameramen, fragile family members strained by not knowing what happened, and some genuinely spooky events take them to the breaking point. When traveling that far into the untamed wilds of the Amazon, no one knows exactly what they will find. That was Dr. Cole’s quest.

From what I've seen of The River - ABC's new TV show from co-creator Oren Peli - things are looking really good. This isn't based solely on previews. I've caught a few decent chunks of the first episode and I was impressed; a full review is coming soon.
Today, ABC revealed a clip called "Lead Cameraman" that offers a look at the February 7th premiere. Two back to back episodes will air on that date from 9pm-11pm. Bruce Greenwood, Joe Anderson, Paul Blackthorne, Paulina Gaitan, Leslie Hope, Eloise Mumford, Shaun Parkes, Thomas Kretschmann and Daniel Zacapa star.
The River concerns the search for a famed explorer who goes missing on the Amazon. His family - with a television crew - embark on a mission to rescue him. Creep stuff ensues.

Kicking off next Tuesday is ABC's new docu-horror 'The River'. And to help get those hairs firmly sticking up on the backs of your necks already comes another new clip from the upcoming pilot episode, directed by 'Orphan' helmer Jaume Collet-Serra. 'The River' is the brainchild of creator Oren Peli who is hoping to bring a unique 'found footage' style to the small screen much like he did for his debut feature 'Paranormal Activity' back in 2007 which subtley redefined the sub-genre and has been ridiculously imitated since with particularly shoddy counterparts. Joe Anderson ('The Crazies'), Bruce Greenwood, Eloise Mumford ('Lone Star'), Paul Blackthorne, Daniel Zacapa, Thomas Kretschmann, Shaun Parkes, Bruce Dern and Leslie Hope all star in the new series. Check out the new clip below. 'The River follows the story of wildlife expert and TV personality Emmet Cole. Emmet set course around the world with his wife,...
