Unlike other major awards bodies, the Tony Awards decide their nominations via a committee of industry members who commit to seeing every single production that opens during the Broadway season. This committee can thus make informed decisions on what shows, performers and creatives should earn recognition from New York theatre’s top honor.
In 2023, 40 theatre professionals saw all 38 eligible musicals and plays and selected the nominees in 26 competitive categories.
Below, a complete list of the 2023 Tony Awards nominating committee members including their professions plus past Tony nominations and wins:
Warren Adams, choreographer, director and producer
Tony winner for Best Revival of a Musical for “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” (2014)
Becky Ann Baker, actor
Pun Bandhu, actor and producer
Two-time Tony winner for Best Revival of a Play for “Glengarry Glen Ross” (2005) and Best Musical for “Spring Awakening” (2007) and Tony nominee for “Beetlejuice” (2019)

The women of The View have never been afraid to speak their mind and hold power to account throughout its 25-year history. Joy Behar has been there since the beginning and has challenged people on their views during that time. Her latest segment on the show, “Joy’s Banned Book Club,” aims to shine a light on books that are being removed from school libraries around the country.

With the rise of conservative extremism around the country, state and local leaders are using their power to restrict access to books in schools. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, for example, has used his “Stop Woke” Act as a way to remove books that have been taught in schools for decades such as To Kill a Mockingbird.

Joy Behar on Friday introduced a new weekly segment on “The View”: “Joy’s Banned Book Club,” which will highlight titles that have been targeted for removal from public schools and libraries.
“Book bans have become an almost daily occurrence,” Behar said. “Last school year alone, there were more than 2,500 instances of books being banned in over 5,000 schools … Even children’s books are under fire. So with that in mind, we’re introducing a new segment on the show this week, which we like to call ‘Joy’s Banned Book Club.'”
The TV host and comic kicked off the segment with the award-winning children’s book “And Tango Makes Three,” a 2005 title by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell. The book tells the story of two male penguins who bonded at the New York Zoo and raised a chick together.

The View cohost Joy Behar announced on-air during today episode that the show will introduce a weekly segment called “Joy’s Banned Book Club,” with the inaugural selection of the 2005 children’s book And Tango Makes Three.
The book, written by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell with illustrations by Henry Cole, is based on the real-life story of two Central Park Zoo male penguins who form a bond and raise a newly born chick. Since its publication, And Tango Makes Three has won numerous literary awards, but last month the book was deemed unsuitable for elementary students and banned by the Escambia County School Board, near Pensacola, Florida, for what the board called “sexual innuendo.”
“This is not some kinky Shades of Grey for penguins,” Behar said on the show today. “It’s a sweet, graceful way to introduce children to the concept of acceptance of same sex relationships and non-traditional families.

Disney has announced a "special arrangement" to allow a stage musical based on their 1996 animated feature adaptation of Victor Hugo's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame".
Alan Menken ("Beauty and the Beast," "Little Shop of Horrors") and Stephen Schwartz ("Wicked," "Pippin") penned the music and lyrics of the Oscar-nominated score from the film which will be re-used here.
Peter Parnell ("The West Wing") will pen the book, Josh Bergasse will choreograph, and Stephen's son Scott Schwartz will direct. The musical will run October 28th – December 7th in the Mandell Weiss Theatre at San Diego's La Jolla Playhouse ahead of a possible Broadway run.
The musical was actually first produced in Germany more than a decade ago but has not been seen in the United States.
