It has become a running record that “Better Call Saul” has yet to win a single Emmy Award from its now 53 nominations. But the AMC legal crime drama has seven last chances this year to nab a long-awaited and deserved trophy for the second half of its stellar final season, which aired last summer. Read on for a closer look at “Better Call Saul’s” final seven nominations.
While the “Breaking Bad” prequel has been hit-or-miss in a lot of other main categories in the past, it has kept a slot in the Best Drama Series category its entire run. This year, half of the lineup is a whole new crop of shows and with nomination tallies, “Better Call Saul” is in the same realm as Netflix’s former recipient “The Crown” with six and freshman series “Andor” on Disney+ and “House of the Dragon” on HBO with eight. “Top Gun: Maverick” won the live-action feature film award at the Cinema Audio Society’s Cas Awards, which took place in Los Angeles on Saturday evening.
It won in a category whose nominees were identical to the lineup in the Oscars’ Best Sound category: “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “The Batman,” “Elvis” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” During the time when the Oscars gave out separate sound awards for mixing and editing, the Cas winner went on to take the Oscar for sound mixing a little less than half the time – but in the first two years after the Academy combined its two categories into one, the guild and Oscar winners have matched both times.
Other feature-film winners included “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” for animation and “Moonage Daydream” for documentary.
Television winners included “Better Call Saul,” “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” “Formula 1: Drive to Survive” and “Only Murders in the Building.

Karol Urban has been elected president of the Cinema Audio Society, succeeding Mark Ulano, who has been termed out after four years. Urban, a veteran re-recording mixer, is only the second female president in the organization’s 55-year history, and the first since 2002.
The Cas, whose membership is 95% male, was founded in 1964 to advance the specialized field of cinematic sound recording and to achieve recognition for its members.
“I am so incredibly honored to have garnered the confidence of our esteemed members,” Urban said. “After years of serving under different presidents and managing the content for the Cas Quarterly, I have learned so much about the achievements, interests, talents and concerns of our membership. I am excited to be given this new platform to celebrate the achievements and herald new opportunities to serve this incredibly dynamic and talented community.”
Urban joined Cas in 2008 and began contributing articles for the Cas quarterly magazine.

At first glance, nine types of Emmy Awards for sound seems a bewilderingly large number. To enlighten the confused, TV sound professionals are eager to shed light on the differences between sound editing and sound mixing — two separate peer groups in the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences — as well as the genres within each category.
The sound editor, explains Wylie Stateman, nominated as co-supervising editor for “Godless,” is primarily responsible for organizing, synchronizing and clarifying the soundtrack. “First and primary responsibility is with dialogue, from production through completion and delivery,” he says.
Stateman, who did most of his work for the Netflix show at Light Iron in New York, further notes: “We need to add the sounds of the environment and take out inappropriate ones, and synchronize them all successfully. The goal is to not obscure the dialogue, and to sound like everything is in the right acoustical space.” Sound...
