If you think of iconic ’90s albums, a few may come to mind. Perhaps you’re a rap fan and go for Biggie’s “Ready to Die” or Nas’s “Illmatic.” If you’re more of a heavy rocker, there’s Nirvana’s “Nevermind,” and if you’re into more alternative records then Radiohead’s “Ok Computer” and Fiona Apple’s “Tidal” are probably on your list. However, much like records like “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” or Oasis‘s “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory,” one answer that you might hear coming from any avid consumer regardless of genre preference is Alanis Morissette’s “Jagged Little Pill.” The pop-rock record is widely hailed as one of the best of the ’90s and, sometimes, ever. Among its many honors, it won Album of the Year at the 1996 Grammys.

On June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court voted to overrule Roe v. Wade, ending the constitutional right to an abortion after nearly 50 years. The news sent a shockwave across America and around the world, but it was not unexpected, as a draft version of the decision leaked to the media in early May. During that time, IndieWire ran this interview with Caren Spruch, the national director of arts and entertainment engagement for Planned Parenthood, who has been consulting on film and TV projects that deal with abortion challenges in America for years.
In a statement following the release of the Supreme Court decision, Planned Parenthood wrote on Twitter: “We know you may be feeling a lot of things right now — hurt, anger, confusion. Whatever you feel is Ok. We’re here with you — and we’ll never stop fighting for you. If you need an abortion, help is available to make...

Timmy Thomas Dies: Singer-Songwriter Of 1972 Hit Anti-War Anthem ‘Why Can’t We Live Together’ Was 77
Timmy Thomas, the singer, songwriter and keyboardist whose minimalist yet urgent 1970s hit anti-war anthem “Why Can’t We Live Together” eventually would sell more than 2 million copies, died March 11, at a hospital in Miami. He was 77.

His family announced his death on Facebook, and wife Lillie (Brown) Thomas told The New York Times that the cause was cancer.
Accompanied only by his Lowrey organ and an early drum machine set to a staccato, bossa nova beat, Thomas delivered a fervent, melancholy vocal performance calling for an end to war as the conflict in Vietnam dragged on. In a refrain that was as catchy as it was pleading, Thomas sang, “Everybody wants to live together/Why can’t we live together?”
Released in August 1972, the reached No. 1 on R&b charts and No. 3 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart in early 1973.

Exclusive: The strange, true-life story of Elmer McCurdy, a turn-of-the-20th Century train robber whose corpse became a carnival attraction and unwitting stage prop well into the 1970s, will be adapted into a musical by the writers of Broadway’s acclaimed The Band’s Visit.
The new theater piece, titled Dead Outlaw, will feature music and lyrics by David Yazbek and Erik Della Penna, with a book by Itamar Moses. The project marks the first reteaming of Yasbek and Moses since their multiple-Tony-winning The Band’s Visit, which made its Broadway debut in 2017.
Yazbek and Della Penna have composed 14-songs for Dead Outlaw, and a premiere presentation is scheduled for March 14 at the Manhattan venue 54 Below.

This Lucifer review contains spoilers.
Lucifer Season 5 Episode 11
“Don’t mysterious ways me; you just exploded a man.”
Grammar faux pas aside, Joan Osborne’s 1995 release raises a philosophical question that to this point has gleaned no satisfactory answer – “What if God was one of us?” I’m not sure we’ve gained much meaningful insight to this question, but Lucifer has a lot of fun exploring that scenario while at the same time addressing much of the pain with which so many of the characters continue to struggle. “Resting Devil Face” takes a multi-layered approach to examine the emotional cost inherent in most parent/child relationships even when God happens to be your dad.
Though the primary relationship schism exists between Lucifer and his Father, a significant amount of soul searching takes place in “Resting Devil Face.” There always seems to be that one heart rending moment that sets Lucifer apart from the standard,...

Sunday night’s Grammys featured a slew of incredible performances, but there was one the stood out above all others. Yes, it happened — Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion performed “Wap” live on primetime television.
Before the performance, the main question was simply How the duo would be able to pull off the song, considering its explicit lyrics. The answer was simple: they replaced most of the words and bleeped out the ones that couldn’t be easily replaced. In fact, the changes brought the duo’s lip syncing — a common practice at the Grammys — into sharp focus for some.
But the big question after the performance? How conservatives would react to the display.

In honor of this month’s Bandcamp Friday, Dawn Landes has released a stripped-down duet with the late Justin Townes Earle. Recorded roughly a decade ago, it’s a plainspoken, finger-picked version of Dolly Parton’s “Do I Ever Cross Your Mind.”
Earle and Landes recorded the song at Landes’ Brooklyn studio while the two singer-songwriters were on tour circa 2010-2011. Proceeds for the song will go to Earle’s family, wife Jenn Marie and daughter Etta St. James Earle. The song was originally released as a free download 10 years ago,...

It can be hard to keep up with all the new releases out there, even in a year when many of us had nothing but time and unlimited streaming services at our fingertips. Inevitably, there are worthwhile albums that get overlooked by even the most devoted music fans. Some of the albums on this list are DIY gems from the far corners of Bandcamp; others came out on established labels and got a fair amount of attention, but deserved even more. Read on for 18 records from this year that Rolling Stone...

Amber Woodhouse is exhausted. The Nashville-based singer and musician, who joined Steve Gorman’s roots-rock band Trigger Hippy last year, is tired of being your token black friend. Woodhouse plainly says as much in a first-person poem that the Minneapolis native wrote after the death of George Floyd at the hands of police.
Woodhouse happened to be visiting her parents’ when Floyd was killed and was out for a bike ride in Minnehaha Park, not far from where he died. When she returned home and heard about the incident, she was shaken.

Onstage in recent years, Michael Bolton routinely introduces a number he’s about to sing by first announcing its composer, Bob Dylan. The reaction is usually muted: “Bob Dylan should elicit this enormous response,” he says. “But I don’t get that.” Then the piano-based melody starts up, Bolton works his way into the soothing melody, and the crowd melts. “It makes people feel good and they give it up at the end the song,” Bolton says. “It’s the audience’s response to the song that turns it all around.

In the least surprising news of the year, the organizers behind Woodstock 50 gave into the inevitable on Wednesday and announced that the festival would not be taking place. “Unfortunately, we ran out of time,” Michael Lang told Rolling Stone shortly after the news broke. “[It] was an unfortunate venture, but I chalk it up to having the wrong partners early on. We did everything we could have done and we had the right motivations. We put together what I thought was an amazing lineup of talent. I thought we had all that right.

When Trigger Hippy released their debut album in 2014, the group was more like a loose collective than a cemented band. Chalk that up to the numerous other projects of its members at the time, including co-founders Steve Gorman and Nick Govrik, and Joan Osborne and guitarist Jackie Greene. While Trigger Hippy hit the road in earnest in support of the record, they eventually stalled out and took a long hiatus, leaving the future of the band in doubt.

There’s perhaps no genre Danny Boyle can’t work within. On the opposite spectrum from his darker works, Yesterday is a flawed yet mostly effective light and fluffy departure, examining stardom in a post-Beatles world in which fledging alt-rocker Jack Malik (Hamish Patel) become the vessel for spreading love, joy, and sonic harmony. While the film provides the kind of comfortable formulaic delight that screenwriter Richard Curtis has built his 40-year career on, it’s not destined to be an oft-rewatchable gem like so many of his previous efforts, such as Love Actually, Notting Hill, and Four Weddings and a Funeral–nor may it inspire younger viewers to revisit The Beatles catalog.

On September 7th, Cma Award-winning vocalist Kathy Mattea will release Pretty Bird, her first new album in six years. A sublime acoustic collection including a number of smartly chosen and heartfelt covers, the record marks something of a new era in Mattea’s 30-plus-year career. Over the past several years her deep, rich singing voice has experienced significant changes that could have put a permanent end to her performing, but after extensive vocal training she has emerged from what she refers to as her “dark night of the soul” with a duskier instrument.

David Cassidy‘s nephew Jack Cassidy appeared on Monday’s edition of “The Voice” and impressed enough to make it through his blind audition and get into the battle rounds. This softly spoken 18-year-old accompanied himself on the piano and delivered a soulful rendition of the 1995 Joan Osborne hit “One of Us.” Photo Gallery: ‘The Voice’ past winners for seasons […]...

Music runs in the family!
David Cassidy‘s nephew Jack wowed viewers and fans with his blind audition on Monday’s The Voice, and successfully moved on to the battle rounds.
While playing the keys, the 18-year-old — who is also the grandson of Partridge Family‘s Shirley Jones — belted out Joan Osborne’s 1995 hit “One of Us” to sway coaches Adam Levine and Alicia Keys to turn their red chairs.

Jack Cassidy -- nephew of David Cassidy and grandson of The Partridge Family's Shirley Jones -- took steps to find his place in his family's musical heritage by competing in The Voice's blind auditions on Monday.
Before coming out to perform for the panel of judges, Cassidy sat down for a pre-recorded segment, where he opened up about his background.
"I come from a very musical family," Cassidy shared. "Growing up, everyone was a singer and everyone had their own careers. It's just been this searching and this struggle to find out who I was."
'The Voice': 7 Things You Didn’t See on TV From Season's 12 Blind Auditions.
Cassidy has turned his life to religion and helping the less fortunate, and in turn has made soulful worship music his niche. He says he sees The Voice as an opportunity to help further his goals and "really carry on the family legacy."

A review of tonight's "The Leftovers" coming up just as soon as I get back my copay... "Will she feel it?" -Nurse "I don't know." -Matt Last season's Matt-centric "Two Boats and a Helicopter" turned out to be the skeleton key that unlocked the full, overwhelming potential of "The Leftovers, so it was only a matter of time in this all-pov second season before we got another Matt showcase. And boy, did we — even before Christopher Eccleston went full frontal and forever changed the way I will look at the Ninth Doctor(*). Even more than "Two Boats," "No Room at the Inn" was a fascinating, unsettling look at blurry how the line can grow between religious belief and madness. (*) I'm told "The Leftovers" writers took to referring to that moment as "the sonic screwdriver scene." The title, of course, refers to the fate of another woman named Mary who becomes pregnant under metaphysical circumstances.

Pharrell Williams can do no wrong in my book — although he came pretty darn close when he anthropomorphized musical notes during the final night of The Voice‘s Season 8 Knockout Rounds.

As Joan Osborne might have put it: What if God was a high-school football coach? In this fact-based tale of the trials and tribulations of Northern California’s De La Salle Spartans football team, which had its historic 151-win streak suddenly and tragically interrupted in 2004, Jim Caviezel plays Bob Ladouceur, the coach of infinite patience, wisdom, and caring, who, despite having a heart attack, still managed to guide his emotional players to victory and maturity amid upheaval and self-doubt. “Winning a lot of games is doable,” he says early on. “Teaching kids there’s more to life, that’s hard.” How does he do it? He has team meetings where he encourages his kids to stand up and read out their “commitment cards,” in which they talk about what they want to achieve, both athletically and personally. He teaches religion classes, and asks his players to learn humility (De La...

You’ve got two days to get your best Christmas playlist together. Here are 10 under-sung classics to complete the mix.
1. Nat King Cole, “Caroling, Caroling”
I once declared Nat King Cole the ultimate Christmas balladeer, and that title is rightfully earned on this simple gem. Sweet, rich, and loving. The signature Nat blend.
2. Carpenters, “Christ is Born”
For a religious track, this may be the greatest under-known Christmas hymn. Karen Carpenter is, to my ears, the best and most vulnerable vocalist ever, and this beautiful song is just as crystalline and sacred as her voice.
3. Joan Osborne, “What Do Bad Girls Get”
You will kick yourself for not knowing this song. Joan Osborne’s voice is electric (Have you heard her heart-stopping cover of “What Becomes of the Broken Hearted”?), and the sentiment is naughty, yet sincere. I like to call this “a Christmas anthem for the rest of us.

James Gandolfini's funeral was held this morning at the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine in New York. Among the mourners were his "Sopranos" castmates as well as the show's creator, David Chase, who offered a eulogy for his friend and colleague. Alan Sepinwall, who for 14 years served as the television columnist at The Star-Ledger, Tony Soprano's newspaper of choice, posted a transcript of what he said at HitFix. "I tried to write a traditional eulogy, but it came out like bad TV," Chase confessed, and what he wrote instead is sad and lovely, and proposes one last scene for the character Gandolfini played so well: You know, everybody knows that we always ended an episode with a song. That was kind of like me and the writers letting the real geniuses do the heavy lifting: Bruce, and Mick and Keith, and Howling Wolf and a bunch of them.

Dear Jimmy,

I think the deal is I’m supposed to speak about the actor/artist’s work part of your life. Others will have spoken beautifully and magnificently about the other beautiful and magnificent parts of you: father, brother, friend. I guess what I was told is...

The child of musicians (his mother was a singer, his father a bandleader), Prince (born June 7, 1958) was a precocious talent who had his first band at age 12 and, according to the notes to his second album, had learned to play 26 instruments before he was out of his teens. In fact, he made his first album as a teenager. He'd signed to Warner Brothers, which he picked because it was the only label that contractually agreed to let him self-produce. That's a pretty ballsy demand for a teenager to make; by comparison, the great Stevie Wonder only achieved that degree of production control after over a decade of being micromanaged by Motown. On that debut, For You, Prince plays and sings every note).

I'm super excited that Carol has found a director and it's Todd Haynes, who did Far From Heaven and Mildred Pierce. Out lesbian Christine Vachon, who has made many of my favorite films, will co-produce. Now the adaptation of The Price of Salt can finally get rolling!
Buzzfeed compiled The 10 Queerest Disney Movies and Mulan comes in at number one. I always thought she was hot in drag.
Over at Flavorwire, Michelle Tea named her five favorite books about teen girls in trouble. I have some reading to do!
Holly Miranda lends her voice to this new MMoths song, but she's not in the creepy video.
Patty Schemel is #82 on Spin's 100 Greatest Alternative Drummers. I'd have her much higher on my list.
Mount Moriah recorded a set for NPR's World Cafe.
