Paolo Sorrentino’s Youth was the big winner at this year’s 28th European Film Awards on Saturday night in Berlin, taking home the top honour for European Film 2015 as well as the awards for European Director and European Actor.
These awards came only two years after Sorrentino’s previous film The Great Beauty bagged the same clutch of awards (plus Best European Editor) at the corresponding event.
Michael Caine was visibly moved when he came on stage to accept the European Actor trophy for his portrayal of an elderly composer and conductor. “It’s been 50 years and I’ve never won an award in Europe, and I’ve now won two in one evening,” the veteran actor quipped.

★★★★☆ Régis Roinsard scores a palpable hit with debut feature Populaire (2012), a romantic comedy about speed-typing, starring Déborah Francois, Romain Duris and The Artist's Bérénice Bejo. Set in France at the tail end of the 1950s, Rose (Francois) a shopkeeper's daughter dreams of escaping provincial life and making something of herself. She travels to Normandy for an interview with the boss of an insurance company, Louis Echard (Duris), and is delighted when he takes her on as his secretary. Rose is hopeless at her job and Louis considers letting her go, but her gift for typing feeds his addiction to competitive sport.
Louis becomes obsessed with training Rose to compete in the national speed-typing contests that were in vogue at the time. Louis invites Rose to lodge with him in his palatial home, so that he is better able to teach her to touch-type and slowly the pair fall in love.

Belgian director Jaco Van Dormael is preparing to shoot his first film in half a decade, a Brussels-set comedy, provisionally entitled Fille de Dieu and starring French actor Daniel Auteuil as God.
“The pitch is: God exists, he lives in Brussels, he’s horrible to his daughter, she gets revenge,” Van Dormael told ScreenDaily.
Van Dormael – best known for his Toto the Hero, The Eighth Day and his last film Mr. Nobody – plans to shoot in Belgium in spring to early summer 2014.
He is producing through his company Terra Incognita. Auteuil, who starred in The Eighth Day, will co-produce through his Paris-based Zack Films.

Venice Film Festival’s jury announced the movie “Lebanon” was the winner of the Golden Lion on the last day of the 11-day screening of films from around the world.
“Lebanon,” tells the story of Israeli paratroopers searching a hostile town. The movie is a look at war from inside a military tank by Israeli helmer Samuel Maoz, based on his personal experience as a young soldier during his country’s 1982 invasion of Lebanon.
“I dedicate this award to all those thousands of people all over the world who came back from the war, like me, safe and sound. Apparently they are fine. They walk, get married, have children. But inside them, the memories will remain stuck in their souls,” said Maoz at the award ceremony.
The Silver Lion for best director went to New York-based Iranian visual artist Shirin Neshat for her first feature “Women Without Men,” an Iranian film about women and repression.
