J.J. Abrams' 2009 "Star Trek" feature film wasn't so much an adaptation of the 1966 TV series as it was a film version of how non-Trekkies view the franchise. To explain: on the TV series, Captain Kirk (William Shatner) is typically depicted as being judicious, stern, and decisive. Because of the few times Kirk solved problems with his fists, however, he has gained a (perhaps unfair) reputation for being a reckless cowboy, an insufferable lothario, and a flippant charmer. Abrams' version of Kirk (Chris Pine) rolled with those misconceptions, making a "high-octane" version of the character. Indeed, all the characters are now broader, more passionate versions of themselves. This is in addition to each of them being secret super-geniuses, deeply expert in at least one field of science, language, medicine, or engineering.

The next time you fire up eBay looking for a lightly used PS5 or a random everyday item that kind of resembles the face of Jesus Christ, take a closer look -- you might just come across a priceless pop-culture relic that has been missing for decades. Anyone who's used these sorts of online marketplaces for long enough undoubtedly has their fair share of horror stories, but this is one case that ultimately resulted in a happy ending for all involved.
It's a tale that has gone down as part of "Star Trek" lore over the long years. A franchise as long-lasting as this one will inevitably rack up its fair share of fan-favorite props and other objects of import, created by talented and pioneering artists to bring genuinely out-of-this-world visuals and legendary concept art to life. Colloquially among Trekkies, the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Up the Long Ladder" is known as "The one with the Space Irish." Or maybe I'm the only one who refers to it that way. Regardless, "Up the Long Ladder" features the Space Irish. In the episode, the U.S.S. Enterprise has to evacuate a colony on the planet Bringloid V, as their sun is experiencing solar flares. Long ago, the Bringloidians adopted an Irish agrarian lifestyle, and they bring along their livestock, hay, and twee Irish accents. The colony's patriarch, Danielo O'Dell (Barrie Ingham), is a caricature Irish drunk, and his daughter Breanna (Rosalyn Landor) is a typically haughty Irish lass.
It's later revealed that the Bringloidians represent only half of a century-old transport ship, and that the rest of the settlers formed their own colony on a nearby planet. The second colony, called Mariposa, is technologically advanced,...

[This story contains spoilers for Picard season three’s final episode.]
Star Trek Picard’s third season finale takes the Next Generation crew back to where it all began — though showrunner Terry Matalas was too busy capturing its key scenes to take in the wonder of being on the bridge of the Enterprise-d nearly 30 years after Tng went off the air.
“The Last Generation” – written and directed by Matalas – concludes a season-long narrative with a finale that is a high-stakes mix of nostalgia and tears. The episode finds Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the rest of his The Next Generation crew taking their old ship, the Enterprise-d, deep into the heart of a massive Borg cube to save Picard’s Borg-ified son, Jack (Ed Speleers), from the vengeful clutches of the Borg Queen (voiced by Star Trek: First Contact’s Alice Krige) before she can use Jack (Aka “Vox”) to assimilate the galaxy. Picard, Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and Worf (Michael Dorn...

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses major plot developments in Season 3, Episode 9 of “Star Trek: Picard,” currently streaming on Paramount+.
All season long, the producers of “Star Trek: Picard” have boldly pulled out all the stops to make the third and final season one for the books. To that extent, it seemed like only a matter of time until we finally got to see the Enterprise — that is, the Enterprise-d, the Galaxy-class starship that made its first appearance in 1987 with the premiere episode of “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”
That moment of truth finally came at the end of “Vox” — the 9th and penultimate episode of Season 3 — when the reunited bridge crew took their stations on the Enterprise-d, which turns out to be the only Federation starship capable of resisting assimilation by the powerful Borg.
Executive producer Terry Matalas went through hoops to make sure history never forgot the name Enterprise.

In just about every way, the third and final season of “Star Trek: Picard” is both about looking back and moving forward. In addition to reuniting the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise from “The Next Generation” for the first time since 2002’s “Star Trek: Nemesis,” it also features a new starship on which most of the action takes place: the U.S.S. Titan, first seen in animated form on “Star Trek: Lower Decks” and now refit as a Neo-Constitution Class Starship.
For showrunner, executive producer and self-professed “Star Trek” fan Terry Matalas, the inspiration for a retro-looking starship came while he was shopping for a car. “I missed a proper saucer section on the top part of a starship, and I couldn’t help but notice how many cars have gone retro these days. And I remember, as I was driving around, I thought, ‘What if Starfleet did that?...

Mike McMahan, the creator of "Star Trek: Lower Decks" has been coy about the actual size of his show's central vessel, the U.S.S. Cerritos. Given the ship's status as a secondary utility vehicle, viewers might come to believe that the ship is tiny, perhaps even one of the smallest in the fleet. However, some recent expanded universe lore -- particularly, the Eaglemoss scale model of the Cerritos -- have declared the ship to be about as long as the U.S.S. Enterprise-e. For non-Trekkies, that's actually quite long.
McMahan once confessed to Inverse that the size of the Cerritos actually changed thanks to his show's increased animation budget. In the first season of "Lower Decks," animators were only able to include so many windows on the ship exterior. When the budget increased, detail on the ship became more elaborate, and more windows were added. More windows, however,...

When Star Trek: Strange New Worlds eventually debuts on CBS All Access and gives us the further adventures of Captain Pike, Spock, and Number One aboard the USS Enterprise Ncc-1701, another gap in the Star Trek timeline will be fully explored. And yet, this gap isn’t the weirdest missing piece of Trek history. Other than one episode of The Original Series, we have almost zero on-screen canonical record of adventures that may have occurred for some — or all — of the year 2265, the first year of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy’s five year mission on the Enterprise. In essence, Star Trek: Year One, does not exist. But, could it happen now?
Back when The Original Series first aired, the notion of exactly when it was set was kept somewhat vague. In fact, according to The Making of Star Trek (1968), in Roddenberry’s earliest pitches to networks, he specifically noted that...

With "Star Trek Beyond" hitting cinemas next month and the CBS series now in the works, the producers behind the "Star Trek" franchise are now getting around to solving one pesky problem that needed to be sorted out sooner or later - continuity.
Specifically it was established in J.J. Abrams' 2009 "Star Trek" that the film and its subsequent sequels are part of an alternate universe that splits off from the rest of the "Star Trek" timeline - so everything that happens within them doesn't upset the continuity of the original 1960s TV series and the various spin-offs like "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine".
Until now there's been no official designation for this splinter timeline, though the Abrams-verse is a name often bandied about. Well that has changed with an official name now being established for it - The Kelvin Timeline.

Last week I had the opportunity to attend a Star Trek Beyond fan event that took place on the Paramount Pictures studio lot. It was an incredibly cool event hosted by none other than Adam Savage. The studio premiered the trailer there and also showed off a few clips from the movie. After watching everything they shared, I am convinced that this third film in the updated franchise will be the best one so far.
J.J. Abrams, Justin Lin, Chris Pine, Karl Urban, and Zachary Quinto all showed up to talk about the film, and below you’ll find some video footage of them and the event thanks to Trailer Addict. You’ve gotta check out this photo featuring the original U.S.S. Enterprise model with the three men who build it. This photo was taken in 1964, and it features Richard C. Datin Jr, Mel Keys, and Vernon Sion who are three of the four people that constructed this piece of art. The other member of their team was Volmer Jensen.
Over the years, this model has been restored a number of times. The most recent restoration was done by the Smithsonian. I’ve included some photos of that restoration below.
Since it’s television debut in 1966, the 11-foot model has been “treated” three times – in 1974, 1984, and 1992. The current restoration comes more than 20 years after the last major effort in 1992 overseen by Science Fiction Modelmaking Associates, who also brought you many of our beloved Tng props and models. The 1992 job caused some controversy in the fan community over the paint that was applied.

J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness features about as stark a qualitative difference between plot mechanics and character work as any blockbuster in recent memory. Judged by the former, this sequel is an absolute mess, one that not only fails to reward any deeper consideration of narrative mechanics both large and small, but actively disincentives any thoughtful discussion of how the story is put together. Pull at one string, and the whole thing starts to fall apart in extremely frustrating ways.
Yet on the character side of things, the case is the exact opposite. Abrams and writers Robert Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and Damon Lindelof (whose mission in life appears to be crafting outstanding, emotional characters and character arcs in the midst of structurally questionable plotting) not only understand Captain Kirk and much of the crew of the USS Enterprise as well or better than most Star Trek creators, but are...

With Star Trek into Darkness looming only a couple weeks away, Paramount is unleashing a load of Star Trek discs onto the market. Some of them – like all of the films – have seen high definition before with previous Blu-ray releases. However, the more impressive assortment of choices come from the newly remastered television series. Season Three of Star Trek: The Next Generation is the latest year to get that treatment. However, that season ends in one of the biggest cliffhangers in television history, and that can be frustrating. To offset any ill will, the two-part season finale and season premiere “The Best of Both Worlds” is also available packaged as a single movie. The remastered version of these two episodes also comes with a commentary track, giving some insight into one of the most popular episodes of the series. Star Trek: The Next Generation – The Best of Both Worlds (1990) Commentators: Cliff Bole (director), Elizabeth Dennehy (actor, Lt...

“The Best of Both Worlds” is a strong piece of television drama and was a defining moment for Star Trek: The Next Generation. The spinoff of Star Trek had been a ratings bonanza for Paramount Pictures, which syndicated the show and reaped huge profits. The fans, though, were slow to warm to the show and its characters, thanks to incredible infighting that sapped the inaugural season of coherence and left it to season two to show the series’ real potential. Season three, which is also out this week on Blu-ray, came to life thanks to a solidified writing staff under Michael Piller’s tutelage and the actors finally getting comfortable with their roles.
After eschewing two-parters, producer Rick Berman allowed Piller to end the season with a cliffhanger and as has been chronicled repeatedly, Piller wrote the first part thinking he was leaving the show. The resolution would be someone else’s headache.

Season 2 of Star Trek The Next Generation had a troubled start. Thanks to the 1988 Writers Guild of America strike, the beginning of the season was delayed, the number of episodes were cut from 26 to 22 and the opening episode had to be adapted from an old Star Trek Phase II script from the 70′s. But with all the problems, it’s still regarded as an improvement over the first season.
Geordi Laforge has been promoted to chief engineer, the excellent Colm Meaney as Chief O’Brien is given a more prominent role, Whoopi Goldberg joined the cast as Guinan as well as the Ten Forward set making its debut and Diana Muldaur made her return to Star Trek (if only for this season) as the new Chief Medical Officer, Dr Katherine Pulaski. A quick confession before we begin. I was never a huge fan of the original Star Trek series from the sixties, and while I have grown to appreciate it over the years, it never felt like it was mine in the same way that The Next Generation does. The reason for this is because the first season of Tng, which has just materialised on Blu-ray, began while I was in my teens, and I followed it religiously, watching each episode as it was originally transmitted, and then again and again by way of my friend Al's vast VHS collection of the original releases.
That said, my last viewing of a Next Generation episode was a good decade ago, during which time Blu-ray has become an accepted, nay essential, part of any serious television and movie fan's viewing experience, and so when the news originally broke that Tng was to be...

Trekkies have reason to rejoice (as do the more serious-minded legions of Trekkers) with the arrival of Star Trek: The Next Generation: Season 1 on Blu-ray. Star Trek: The Next Generation is set decades after Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner, TV’s Celebrity Bowling) and company’s 5-year mission in the original Star Trek series from the 1960s. The new generation of Starfleet officers in a new Enterprise set off on their own 24th Century mission to go where no one has gone before. Among the Enterprise’s officers are Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart, TV’s I, Claudius), Commander William T. Riker (Jonathan Frakes), Lt. When Star Trek: The Next Generation debuted on Sept. 28, 1987, it was one of the most ambitious first episodes of television ever produced. No matter how popular the feature films had been with the original cast, bringing Gene Roddenberry’s optimistic sci-fi vision of our future back to TV with an all-new cast and U.S.S. Enterprise was far from a slam dunk. And then there was the scale of the two-hour pilot, “Encounter at Farpoint,” with roughly 200 feature-film-level visual effects.
That ambition, however, was worth it. St:tng debuted to nearly 27 million viewers, and the show ran for a robust 178 episodes over seven seasons.

Star Trek: The Next Generation had to do a lot to convince fans of Gene Roddenberry’s trendsetting original series that it was the same vision, merely updated. By then, there had been two decades of just Kirk, Spock, McCoy and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise. The fans felt a certain ownership having saved it from cancellation during the original network run and then created an unprecedented following that led to an animated series and four feature films. The notion of continuing the series and setting it 78 years in the future left people wary.
The turmoil surrounding the birth of Star Trek: The Next Generation and the haphazard production of the first season had fans even more concerned before the new show debuted in late September 1987. In those early Internet days, word still spread at warp speed as familiar names David Gerrold and D.C. Fontana joined and...

The good news is that a Blu-ray release of Tng in the planning stages and will happen sometime in 2012. The bad news is that before it comes out, there will first be a testing of the waters by Paramount Home Entertainment with a release of four popular episodes of the series on Blu-ray.

Yesterday we told you that the first season of the classic “Trek” has arrived on Blu-ray, and now we’re back to report that all six of the “first generation” films have also made their way to HD. Remastered in high-def and sporting new audio tracks, the collection presents the “Star Trek” films as they have never been seen before.
