With the appetite of a hungry grizzly, “The Bear” could gobble up a few Emmy records for its sophomore season. Fresh off a smashing first season that set a new benchmark for comedy series wins with 10 trophies, FX’s awards-gobbling show shows no signs of letting up. Its second season, which aired in June 2023, is eyeing three more records to own: most acting nominations for a series in a single year, most nods for a comedy, and most nominated episode in history with its sixth installment, “Fishes.”
“Fishes” dishes out a heated Christmas dinner flashback of the Berzatto family, positioning itself as the series’ pièce de résistance thus far — imagine the “Succession/Connor’s Wedding” version of family dinners, only with more food spills. Directed by Christopher Storer, who also co-wrote the episode with Joanna Calo, “Fishes” seems the obvious pick for Emmy nods in both directing and writing categories.

The Bear is one of those rare stories that comes along once in a blue moon. It doesn't get by on flashy CG, explosions, or modded-out race cars flying down the streets.
Witty dialogue, high stress, and intense drama fuel this machine, and perhaps that's why so many big-name actors are attracted to its frenzied undercurrents.
Kudos to the creative team assembled under the banner of The Bear. They've created a fantastic ride, thrumming with intensity and entertainment without needing to spend a fortune.
They're clearly doing something right. Series creator Christopher Storer (bolstered by incredible writers like Joanna Calo) nails the pace and character beats while accomplishing a rare feat within the industry, perfecting the art of the cameo appearance.
Cameos are often tricky for several reasons. They tend to disrupt the immersive nature of the story. As a prime example, everyone is still trying to forget Ed Sheeran...

We promise that this Better Call Saul list is all good, man.
First introduced late in Season 2 of Breaking Bad, Bob Odenkirk’s sleazy criminal lawyer extraordinaire, Saul Goodman, immediately became a scene-stealing fan favorite — and then grabbed the spotlight again in Better Call Saul when it premiered in 2015. Co-created by Breaking Bad mastermind Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould (the writer-director of Saul’s first Bad appearance), Better Call Saul serves as both a prequel and sequel to its predecessor. The series covers the years before the man known as Jimmy McGill becomes Saul Goodman, and, ultimately, Omaha Cinnabon manager Gene Takavic, the identity he takes on following the events of Breaking Bad.
Better Call Saul starts off as more of a courtroom and family drama, but the eventual emergence of Breaking Bad power players like Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks) and Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) help raise the stakes...

David Cross and Bob Odenkirk made headlines in 2022 when they announced plans to reunite for the docu-style Paramount+ comedy “Guru Nation,” in which the “Mr. Show” masterminds were cast as rival cult gurus manipulating the minds of their deluded followers. On a recent podcast appearance, Cross said he believed that their Paramount+ series, which was in early development at Paramount Television Studios, was scrapped because the “marketing and analytics department” rejected it.
Cross and Odenkirk wrote and developed the show, which would have been an eight-episode limited series. He said the show’s pitch ignited a bidding war between four different networks.
“We went with Paramount+, and we wrote up the first four episodes and then a really specific, extensive bible for the last four — all of which we had pitched, like, ‘Here’s the story, here are the characters and here’s how it would work,'” Cross said...

We still don’t know whether Kevin Costner will be returning to his role as John Dutton for the final stretch of Yellowstone when the back half of Season 5 returns this November. However, some fans have a very clever idea for how the show could finish out the character’s arc by hiring someone else for the role: his Hollywood look-alike Bob Odenkirk to step into Dutton’s scruffy boots! For those unfamiliar with the Odenkirk-Costner connection, the gag comes from the former’s hit series Better Call Saul. In the Breaking Bad prequel, Odenkirk stars as a pre-Saul Goodman version of his character, who still goes by his given name of Jimmy McGill and pulls off lots of minor (but still gnarly) cons on unsuspecting rubes. In one instance, he convinces a pair of girls to come home with him and his best friend on the pretense that he’s Kevin Costner,...

The second season of The Bear proved to be as stress-inducing as it was profound, intimate and heartwarming, so it's no surprise that it received even more prestigious nominations and awards than the previous one. In addition to the storyline revolving around the titular restaurant and its staff, no less dramatic were the star cameos that appeared either as relatives of the protagonists or as prominent personalities in the restaurant world.
One of the most unexpected, but certainly welcome cameos came from Will Poulter, who played the former colleague of Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) and new mentor to Marcus (Lionel Boyce). And now a new set video has surfaced on X, formerly known as Twitter, with Poulter in attendance. All this means that the actor will return to the series and his role may be expanded to a recurring one.

Few scripted shows excel at causing your blood pressure to sky-rocket like "The Bear." Christopher Storer's acclaimed series centers on the employees of a Chicago-based eatery, which is itself an inherently high-stress environment. Adding to the discomfort, the show pulls you deeply into its characters' perspectives, using invasive close-ups and rapid-fire edits to place you in their headspace and make their underlying anxieties all the more palpable. Other times, the series holds for vast periods without cutting, which makes you sit with its leads as they quietly work through their feelings. That or scramble for dear life like in the mostly one-shot season 1 episode "Review."
Miraculously, "The Bear" managed to top that episode for sheer emotional turbulence with the extra-long season 2 installment "Fishes." Set about five years before the rest of the season, "Fishes" follows series protagonist Carmen "Carmy" Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White) as he returns home from a...

Thanks to his appearance as the shady attorney Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad, actor Bob Odenkirk became a very popular actor and soon, the character received his own spin-off series in the form of Better Call Saul, which served as a prequel and sequel to Breaking Bad. Odenkirk received praise for his performance as Saul Goodman in both series, but the final season of Better Call Saul almost cost him his life, as the actor had a “small heart attack” while on set, having been rushed to the hospital.

April began with showers, plus a tiny regional earthquake on the East Coast, but that didn’t keep anyone away from theaters, even if it was a slower weekend than much of March. Read on for the weekend box office report.
There was little surprise that Warner Bros.’ “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” would win its second weekend at #1. Despite dropping 60% from its fantastic opening weekend, it still was able to take first place with an estimated $31.7 million to bring its total to $135 million after crossing the $100 million mark in its first week. It also passed the $361 million mark globally, with another $59.3 million grossed overseas this weekend.
The weekend offered two new wide releases in Dev Patel‘s directorial debut, the action-thriller “Monkey Man,” and 20th Century’s horror prequel “The First Omen,” the former released into 3,029 theaters vs. “The First Omen’s” 3,375 theaters. “Monkey Man” came into the...

Vera Drew’s The People’s Joker – which was pulled from TIFF in 2022 over “rights issues” — starts a theatrical debut today at the IFC Center, moving to LA’s Landmark’s Nuart next weekend and expanding thereafter with about 85 booking so far — a nice outcome for the mixed-media coming-of-age dark superhero parody that “had gone into into hibernation mode” until Outfest LA Film Festival, said Frank Jaffe, whose distribution company Altered Innocence acquired it then. It’s U.S premiere garnered a Special Mention in the North American Narrative Feature Competition.

It’s one of the most iconic Saturday Night Live sketches of all time — and without Christina Applegate, it might never have happened at all.
Applegate recalled the role she played in getting the sketch on the air while chatting with Dana Carvey and David Spade on today’s episode of “Fly on the Wall,” the duo’s SNL-centric podcast.
Applegate first hosted SNL on May 8, 1993 — an episode most famous for the first appearance of Chris Farley’s motivational speaker character Matt Foley, aka the “Van Down by the River” guy.
In the infamous sketch, Farley’s over-the-top physical comedy quickly causes Applegate and Spade to break into laughter. They struggle to contain it for the rest of the scene, as Farley hikes his pants up, squats low, and destroys a coffee table with an explosive jump.

The Royal Family of England is going through a tumultuous time right now, as it was seen as a massive double blow. Kate Middleton shocked the world in a video message about her cancer diagnosis just weeks after King Charles revealed a similar condition of his health. The Buckingham Palace announced last month that The Monarch had been admitted to a London hospital.

However, a month after the announcement, he made his public appearance on Sunday, as he led the Royal family for Easter Church service at Windsor Castle. Following the chaotic news of the royal family, a piece of comforting news has been circulating the internet, which showcases the bond between the two family members. The news has comforted as His Majesty thinks of the Princess of Wales as his own daughter.

The idea of humans transforming into monsters to address injustice isn’t new; manga like Attack on Titan and Parasyte have already included it. Still, Kaiju No.8 returns to the notion that if a human becomes a kaiju, it must be among the strongest and the greatest of two species.
While some may dismiss Kaiju No.8 as a mere imitation of Attack On Titan, it actually presents the narrative with a finesse that arguably surpasses its predecessor.
Echoing the legendary Godzilla series, Kaiju No.8 mirrors Attack On Titan in several ways, particularly in how its central characters, Kafka Hibino, and Eren Yeager, possess the remarkable ability to morph into the very creatures that threaten their worlds.
The Parralel of Kafka and Eren Yeager
Eren Yeager from Attack on Titan
Unlike Eren Yeager, who was praised for his mastery of omnidirectional mobility gear against Titans, Kafka is essentially at a disadvantage with his humanity.

Bob Odenkirk might be one of the few lucky people in the whole wide world for not only is he an incredible actor with a huge fan following but the actor once also cheated death. Known best for Breaking Bad and its prequel series Better Call Saul, the actor suffered a widowmaker heart attack while on the set of the prequel.

While thankfully his co-stars and crew rushed to his aid, reviving him through CPR, the actor had the most unusual response after surviving the incident.

Actor Bob Odenkirk recovered from a life-threatening heart attack a couple of years ago. But many around him were surprised by his behavior after his recovery.

Odenkirk’s heart attack was a frightening moment for many who knew the star both professionally and personally. Fortunately, Odenkirk had medical staff nearby the time of the incident who were able to resuscitate him. But as grim as the whole ordeal was, Odenkirk asserted that he seemed the least affected by it after making a full recovery.
“During the actual event, it was like I wasn’t mentally there,” Odenkirk recalled in an interview with The Independent. “Even weeks later when I returned to set, it was an emotional moment, but I was a little bit excluded from it. I don’t know if it’s a defence mechanism,...

Let’s be real. If you had to name the most badass action movie of the past few years, what’s the first flick that comes to mind? Yeah yeah, John Wick might be all the rage for teenagers, Liam Neeson continues to do his geriatric Charlie Bronson, and you can never discount Jason Statham and his brand of brutal butt-kicking. But come on, as far as violently visceral and scintillatingly satisfying underdog tales loaded with realistic fisticuffs and gore-sodden gunfights – nobody does it better than Nobody! Indeed, the 2021 cinematic blitzkrieg starring Bob Odenkirk as an unassuming everyman by day and certified ass-kicker by night hit all the right notes to deliver a vicious and delicious revenge dish for the ages.
With that being said, did you know that a Nobody 2 is currently back in the works? Did you know there were discussions about making a Nobody and John Wick crossover movie?...

I hope you haven’t gotten sick of hearing “Yes, chef” yet because there’s another season of The Bear on the way. The third season of the award-winning series is currently shooting in Chicago, but Deadline reports that The Bear has also been renewed for season 4, which will be shot back-to-back with season 3.
Although the renewal isn’t official, it would make sense for FX to want to get another season in the can. The Bears stars Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri are in high demand, with plenty of other projects on their slate. Ebon Moss-Bachrach is also on the rise, especially after it was confirmed that he would be playing Ben Grimm/The Thing in Marvel’s Fantastic Four movie.

Over the last ten years, former stuntman David Leitch has directed such films as Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Hobbs & Shaw, Bullet Train, and the upcoming The Fall Guy. While he keeps busy directing action films, he also produces them, with two Leitch productions being Nobody and Violent Night, both of which were released by Universal Pictures. Talking to Collider, Leitch and fellow producer Kelly McCormick confirmed that Universal is really invested in building Nobody and Violent Night franchises – so Nobody 2 and Violent Night 2 are both heading toward production!
Directed by Ilya Naishuller from a screenplay by Derek Kolstad, Nobody starred Bob Odenkirk as as Hutch Mansell, an unassuming family man who cowers and folds during a home invasion. His post-traumatic shame disorder reignites a long-cooled fire within, and he summons a secret lethal skill set for a revenge mission, only to see it backfire spectacularly and put his family in greater jeopardy.

On Jan. 12, screenwriter Simon Stephenson sent an email to the Writers Guild of America’s senior director of credits Lesley Mackey asking to set up a call to discuss an important matter. The CAA-repped writer, whose credits include Pixar’s “Luca” and StudioCanal’s “Paddington 2,” wrote, “I’ve encountered a credits-related issue on quite a high profile WGA-covered project.” According to the email exchange reviewed by Variety, a call between the two took place, and, in a follow-up missive, Stephenson wrote, “the evidence the holdovers screenplay has been plagiarised line-by-line from frisco is genuinely overwhelming – anybody who looks at even the briefest sample pretty much invariably uses the word ‘brazen.’”
Stephenson was referring to his own screenplay “Frisco,” a drama centered on a world-weary middle-aged children’s doctor and the 15-year-old patient he gets stuck looking after, and David Hemingson’s “The Holdovers” — a drama revolving around a...

Vera Drew is cementing her status as “The People’s Joker.”
The former “I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson” editor directed, co-wrote, edited, and stars in the superhero-parody film that made waves at TIFF 2022 (where IndieWire saw it) before being acquired by Los Angeles-based distributor Altered Innocence in December 2023. Now, thanks in part to social media hashtag-campaign #FreethePeoplesJoker, “The People’s Joker” is indeed free for a North-American theatrical release.
Drew portrays the title character in the queer coming-of-age origin story that reimagines “Batman” villain The Joker as a trans comedian. Joker the Harlequin (Drew) grapples with her gender identity while unsuccessfully attempting to join the ranks of Gotham City’s Ucb (United Clown Bureau) Live, the one government-sanctioned late-night sketch show that is the only platform for rising comedians since Gotham City otherwise outlawed comedy. For a little while it seemed The People’s Joker might be lost to time, a new generation’s Day the Clown Cried or, if you like, Promises Written in Water. Despite an initial screening in TIFF’s Midnight Madness program, director Vera Drew pulled her film from subsequent showings over rights issues. Yet it came to light this December that The People’s Joker would open spring 2024 via Altered Innocence, and ahead of its April 5 debut at the IFC Center (with nationwide bookings to follow), there’s a trailer for the feature a PR email informs us “is in no way created by, endorsed by, or affiliated with DC Comics or any of its related companies.”

"Now you must journey inside yourself..." It's here! Finally! Altered Innocence has revealed the official trailer for a controversial, revolutionary, one-of-a-kind film called The People's Joker. This premiered at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival a few years ago and after earning tons of buzz at the fest, Warner Bros and DC tried to shut it down and stop anyone from watching it (due to copyright claims). But they beat the system! Now it's finally getting a proper theatrical release this April. An aspiring clown grappling with her gender identity combats a fascistic caped crusader. The People's Joker is a trans twist on DC's characters, starring Vera Drew as a new clown of mayhem called Joker the Harlequin. Vats of feminizing chemicals, sexy cartoon interludes, scarecrow psychiatrists, CGI Lorne Michaels, and psychedelic gender dysphoria all play supporting roles. Made by Vera Drew and using her own life experiences as a basis for the film,...

The Brit crime comedy “Down Terrace” was a hit with critics back in 2009. Made on a shoestring budget and shot over a little more than a week, it was lapped up for giving a uniquely dark and hilarious twist to the standard gangster flick while adding splashes of U.K. kitchen-sink social realism into the mix. The film also set up its director Ben Wheatley — making his feature debut after years working on TV, commercials and shorts — for cinematic greatness.
Fifteen years on and Wheatley has more than staked out his territory as one of the U.K.’s most exciting — and unexpected — filmmakers. After landing “cult director” status thanks to his “Down Terrace” follow-ups — the gritty psychological horror “Kill List,” murderous black comedy “Sightseers” and trippy period feature “A Field in England” — he then upped the stakes (and A-list stars) with J.G. As Academy Awards contenders go, “The Holdovers” remains a combined odds frontrunner at Gold Derby in one category (Best Supporting Actress), second in two others and more of an obvious longshot in two more following its three Spirit Awards triumphs on Sunday. But the one thing the Alexander Payne-directed film featuring Oscar nominees Paul Giamatti and awards season juggernaut Da’Vine Joy Randolph, along with dazzling newcomer Dominic Sessa, has going for it as Oscar voting winds down is an impressive number of endorsements of support from famous folks who have moderated Q&As or made their photo presence felt at FYC events simply because they love the film.

Berlin’s European Film Market was the first big test of the post-strike indie film market. Executives were cautiously optimistic ahead of the EFM, reporting a “flood” of big, star-stocked projects that came together just ahead of the market, including A Big Bold Beautiful Journey (Margot Robbie’s first film post-Barbie), The Materialists (Celine Song’s first film post-Past Lives, which has Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal circling) and action packages featuring box office draws Will Smith, Dave Bautista, Channing Tatum and Bob Odenkirk.
