After many years in development hell, a live-action adaptation of the Halo video game franchise finally made its way out into the world as a Paramount+ streaming series back in 2022, with the first episode of the show quickly becoming Paramount+’s most-watched premiere. But while the TV series is returning for a second season, which is scheduled to begin streaming on February 8th, the first season wasn’t met with overwhelming positivity, as many fans of the video game source material were disappointed by some of the choices made for the adaptation. Not even star Pablo Schreiber, who plays the character Master Chief on the show, was entirely happy with that first season. Speaking with SFX Magazine, Schreiber revealed there was even one element that he felt was a huge mistake: the romantic storyline with Master Chief and Makee (Charlie Murphy), which even included a sex scene.

When I caught The Möbius Trip at Glasgow Short Film Festival in March, I was instantly struck by the way it took anxieties surrounding a relatable scenario – a family going on a long car journey – and pushed them into a truly nightmarish scenario. Audiences seemed to agree, with Simone Smith’s film winning a Jury Special Mention award. Using claustrophobic framing, overlapping often foul dialogue and experimenting with hallucinogenic imagery, it expertly depicts a bickering Scottish family trying in vain to find a wedding in the middle of nowhere; striking a chord with anyone who has spent more time than they would wish to with their immediate family. Smith joins us below for a conversation in which we dig into how being with family can bring out your inner madness, shooting almost entirely within the confines of the car, and finding the film’s more visually outré tone in the process of post-production.

Halo, after more than eight winding years in development, will finally land at Paramount+ this spring.
The sci-fi drama, which stars Pablo Schreiber as video game icon Master Chief, has gone through a number of hoops to get to the ViacomCBS streaming platform – from switching over from Showtime to Paramount+ to the exit of co-showrunner Kyle Kinnen in 2018. However, executive producers including Kiki Wolfkill and Justin Falvey say that finally launching the series was a product of commitment and patience.

The following contains some light spoilers for Utopia.
The more common question in Utopia might be “Where is Jessica Hyde?” but “Who is Jessica Hyde?” is just as pressing. Is she friend or foe? Protagonist or antagonist? In the Amazon series, she’s both the star of a mysterious comic book that foretells viruses, biowarfare and man-made diseases, and a real person. She’s the young woman at the center of Utopia’s mystery and, as played by Sasha Lane, she’s what happens when a unique character meets a powerhouse actor.
Getting to know Jessica Hyde means understanding that she is in a fight for her life. A mysterious organization has been pursuing her for as long as she can remember. Escaping them and going on the run, first with her father and then without, transformed her into a feral yet complicated person.
“I appreciated this kind of feral cat energy about her,...

The third feature from director Oz Perkins, Gretel & Hansel is a stylish, female-centric reimagining of the classic Grimm fairytale. Creepy and atmospheric rather than opting for traditional scares, it’s unquestionably worth seeing for Perkins’ distinctive visuals.
Set in an indistinct but fairytale-esque time and place, the film stars Sophia Lillis as level-headed 16 year old Gretel and Sammy Leaky as her 8 year old brother Hansel, who’s cute but not too smart. When they’re cast out by their mother due to famine and poverty (“Dig yourself some pretty little graves” is her parting advice), they have a few minor adventures (including a magic mushroom trip and an unsavoury job offer) before winding up deep in the woods at the surprisingly modern-looking home of...

I don't know about you, but I have been itching for Rooney Mara and David Fincher to reteam on a project. I am still holding out hope for the sequels to their greatly under appreciated The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (at this point, though, that feels like a lost cause), but them doing anything together is enough to spark my interest and it looks like that is going to happen. Mara is in talks to star in Fincher's HBO adaptation of the UK series "Utopia", which will be penned by Gone Girl writer Gillian Flynn. This news comes to us courtesy of The Wrap's Jeff Sneider's Twitter account, so the details of who she would be playing are not totally clear. Most speculation points to the character of Jessica Hyde (originally played by Fiona O'Shaughnessy). We also do not know how far off from the original series they will go,...

With writer/director David Robert Mitchell's Cannes-premiered "It Follows" bringing in over $16 million at the domestic box office on a slim $2 million budget, the theatrical market seems ripe for another arty horror movie hit to arise. With the close of the 3rd annual Stanley Film Festival on Sunday, below I've pegged six buzzed-about horror titles from this year's three major festivals so far (Sundance, SXSW and Stanley) that could become the next unlikely breakout in theaters. "The Witch" Director: Robert Eggers Cast: Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie Synopsis: New England, 1630: William and Katherine lead a devout Christian life, homesteading on the edge of an impassible wilderness, with five children. When their newborn son mysteriously vanishes and their crops fail, the family begins to turn on one another. Screened at: Sundance...

Utopia will not be renewed for a third series on Channel 4, the broadcaster has confirmed.

Utopia's second series came to an end this week in typically explosive fashion.
We won't spoil things, but it's not a big secret to say that we were left on a knife-edge, with the future of our lead characters and the rest of the planet not exactly secure.
To sum up the first 12 hours without giving too much away, a bunch of geeky types obsessed with comic book The Utopia Experiments meet up and uncover a deadly conspiracy.
Unlikely alliances form and fracture. Authority is depicted as the corrupt, dangerous force we all deep down fear it to be.
Our enemies are driven by an invincible mix of unfeeling ideology, emotional weakness and amoral attachment to ends over means - their weapons are blackmail and sickening violence.
The old X-Files mantra of "Trust No One" and Larkin's This Be The Verse never feel more true - but who can survive without family and friends?...

Kudos and Channel 4's excellent conspiracy thriller 'Utopia' seems to be getting the unnecessary Us remake treatment by none other than 'The Social Network' director David Fincher. The subject matter for the new show, based on Dennis Kelly's original series, is the perfect fodder for a director like David Fincher ('The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo') but the British version is so rich with style and tension and outstanding performances anyway does an adaptation serve any purpose? Fincher will direct and executive produce alongside 'Gone Girl' author Gillian Flynn. Rose Leslie, Ian McDiarmid and more have joined the cast of Dennis Kelly's Utopia for its second series...
Wonderful things are afoot. Not only is BBC Three's In the Flesh currently filming its second series, but Channel 4's Utopia has also set to work on the first block of episodes for series two.
Dennis Kelly's unsettling conspiracy drama is returning next year with six new fifty-minute episodes, including - in Kelly's own words - "a very odd" series opener, "which people are either going to really like or really say ‘what the fuck did you do that for?’ and I’ve got no idea what the reaction’s going to be".
Director Marc Munden, who was responsible for establishing Utopia's impressive style in series one, is back to head up the first three episodes of series two.
