Newcastle United left the Liberty Stadium in Swansea with their tails between their legs last week.
All the promise of the opening Barclays Premier League weekend’s game against Southampton was quickly forgotten as the gutless, hopeless football shown under the tutelage of both Alan Pardew and John Carver came back with a vengeance.
It was a shambolic performance that left the prospect of a trip to Old Trafford to face a Manchester United side – unbeaten with a 100% win record before Saturday’s fixture – as daunting as it could possibly be. Every single man in a Newcastle shirt would need to perform to their optimum seven short days after receiving one hell of a beating at the hands of Garry Monk’s Swans. It was a 90 minutes that would tell us a lot as to how Steve McClaren’s Magpies would fare this season.

Steve McClaren’s appointment as Newcastle United boss in June was supposed to herald a complete break from the previous regime.
No more Steve Stone. No more John Carver. And no more Alan Pardew.
Things at St James’ Park were to work differently and the club would be completely rebuilt from within. And McClaren has now revealed that it is arguably his predecessor’s biggest mistake at St James’ Park that he is determined to rectify as soon as possible: the lack of leadership at Newcastle.
Owen Humphreys/Pa Wire
Fabricio Coloccini’s Toon future is unclear and there has been much debate about who exactly the Argentine would hand the Nufc captain’s armband over to should he reunite with Alan Pardew at Crystal Palace.
Jack Colback perhaps? The Geordie midfielder been entrusted with the responsibility of skippering the side on three occasions during the pre-season...

Relief. That is the only emotion on Tyneside right now. Jonas Gutierrez delivered the sweetest of moments in his final appearance in a Magpies shirt as he secured Newcastle United’s 2-0 victory over West Ham United at St James’ Park.
Newcastle United will be in the Premier League next season, but only just – and it took until the very final ball of the 2014-15 campaign had been kicked before that was confirmed.
There will be a post-mortem examination, because pride in Newcastle United is something the Toon Army are still struggling to find in their club right now – but they backed their team to the very hilt against West Ham United. Newcastle have finally won a match for the first time since February 28th – and oh how crucial that victory was.

You can always tell when someone really wants to sell a story by the language they use to market it: Exclusive, Sensational, Amazing! the headlines scream. You Won’T Believe What Happened Next!!! As if everyone is constantly walking around spitting coffee out comically at the sight of a dog rolling over and pulling a daft face or something: but that’s sort of how readers work now, and you have to be competitive.
That’s probably why The Chronicle have just published a story purporting – from its headline at least – to suggest that Andy Carroll has flat out refused to play under Alan Pardew at Newcastle. Not just that he doesn’t want to return becuase he’s happy in London, but that the specific issue he has is with the current boss. “Andy Carroll not interested in playing for Alan Pardew at Newcastle United” the title shouted,...

Mauricio Pochettino’s first game in the Premier League for Spurs hasn’t started to plan and the manager now faces the harsh reality of playing for most of the game with ten men after Kyle Naughton was unfairly red carded for a hand ball in the box.
It is true enough that Naughton’s hands were well above his head, and he could well have saved Kevin Nolan’s shot from hitting the back of the net, sending him off was particularly excessive considering the penalty was given.
Sadly for West Ham, having watched Naughton leave the pitch, Mark Noble stepped up and put his penalty effort wide…

It’s that time of year again; the Premier League season is upon us and, in accordance with that, we’re all making frantic last minute changes to our fantasy league teams over at fantasy.premierleague.com.
Everyone makes a beeline for the obvious talents – in recent years it’s been the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Luis Suarez – all of whom tended to set us back eight figure sums, but what should we be doing with the rest of our money?
It can be a real pain in the backside trying to decide who else to include in your team, aside from the guaranteed points scorers who cost a fortune, but we think we’ve got a few ideas of some of the best value for money players – in terms of how many points they’ll get you – for the coming season.

With Newcastle gearing up for a major transition this summer it is the opportune time for Alan Pardew to usher in a new brand of captain at St James’ Park by relieving Fabricio Coloccini of his duties and transferring them to Cheick Tiote.
Now I understand that my decision to champion Tiote’s candidacy – less than 24 hours after a calamitous mistake that effectively killed Ivory Coast’s World Cup campaign - has been horribly timed but I won’t allow one blunder to cloud my judgement.
To be brutally honest I was never a huge advocate of Coloccini taking the captaincy following Kevin Nolan’s inspirational reign. True, he’s carried the armband with great dignity and diplomacy, more so behind the scenes, but I just don’t share faith, which I consider to be misplaced, that Pardew has in him to lead Newcastle on the field in the future.

An absence of leadership has often been cited as a major problem for Newcastle in the last two years but Alan Pardew is confident captain Fabricio Colocinni will step up to the plate next season.
We all breathed a huge sigh of relief when the Argentine defender vocally committed his future to the Magpies earlier this month following persistent rumours that he would return to his native country to sign for San Lorenzo, the club he supported as a boy.
Two years of uncertainty was swiftly ended by Coloccini, who cited a ‘personal problem as the reason for his struggle to maintain form and fitness and Pardew believes his skipper will prove himself invaluable to the Club next term.
“I think that core leadership of having Colo here is important,” Pardew explained to the Shields Gazette.

A brace from Kevin Nolan secures a huge three points for the Hammers as they continue to struggle against relegation from the English Premier League.
Both headed assists came from former Newcastle man Andy Carroll, who subsequently found himself taking an early bath after appearing to accidentally catch Chico Flores with his arm on 59 minutes.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Hammers comfortably held off the Welsh outfit to secure a much-needed win.
Nolan’s opener came on 26 minutes. Carroll nodded down a cross to the captain, who had time to control the ball before hammering home the opening goal.
The second came on 45 minutes, just before the break. Carroll nodded on a corner for Nolan to finish the job with a neat header.
The result moves the Hammers onto 22 points, within 3 goals of safety as it stands in 18th place.

One of the big mysteries of Newcastle’s season this term has been the status of Jonas Gutierrez.
The long-serving Argentine winger had been first choice for the left-hand side of Newcastle’s midfield for five seasons but after picking up an injury in The Magpies’ awful 4-0 drubbing against Manchester City, he seemingly disappeared and became the forgotten man. Reports were that he had returned home to South America for undisclosed personal reasons before making the briefest of cameos from the bench at Cardiff City in early October, before then barely appearing in any squad for the rest of the season and making no first-team appearances. He has appeared for just 63 minutes in total this season.
Alan Oliver at the Daily Mirror tried to solve the Jonas mystery last month by claiming that Gutierrez’s lack of football for Newcastle this season wasn’t an accident and the hierarchy at St.

Manchester City have only lost one of their last 15 meetings with West Ham as Manuel Pellegrini’s team entertain the East Londoners at the Etihad in the Capital One Cup semi-final.
Jack Collison scored a second half winner for the Hammers at Upton Park in March 2009, but that is the only victory they’ve recorded over City since back-to-back wins in 2006. Sam Allardyce remains short of striking options, so West Ham fans shall fondly remember Dean Ashton’s brace during an Fa Cup run to the final.
The Hammers are not much better off defensively either and come into this two-legged tie off the back of four defeats in their last five. Big Sam chose the Fa Cup third round tie at Nottingham Forest to blood youngsters en masse – a move that resulted in a 5-0 thumping.

Neutrals were treated to an absorbing draw between two of the Premier League’s bottom six at Upton Park. West Bromwich Albion came away from East London with a point thanks to bright prospect Saido Berahino.
A topsy-turvy game at West Ham saw Sam Allardyce’s side lead 1-0 through Joe Cole only to go in behind at half time thanks to a Nicolas Anelka brace. Three goals in four manic second half minutes first saw the Hammers reclaim the lead through sub Modibo Maiga and Kevin Nolan. Baggies striker Berahino then ensured honours finished even.

Joe Cole opened the scoring for the hosts inside five minutes before a late first half brace from Nicolas Anelka put the Baggies ahead. Modibo Maiga and Hammers captain Kevin Nolan struck in quick succession to complete the turnaround after the break.
Saido Berahino rescued a point for West Brom, however, and it could have been more but for the goal frame. His late free kick rattled the woodwork, so both sides shared the spoils.
West Ham survived an early scare when Chris Brunt fired into the side-netting for Albion, and then went ahead in the fourth minute. Joe Cole profited from Diego Lugano’s defensive error after Carlton Cole won an aerial ball. Passes were exchanged...

West Ham United host West Bromwich Albion protecting a record of a decade unbeaten in home meetings. Brian Deane scored three times – twice at the right end and then in his own net – in November 2003 as the Baggies edged a seven-goal thriller 4-3.
The Hammers last entertained Albion in March and ran out 3-1 winners, but they will still be without Andy Carroll – the difference between the sides that day. Sam Allardyce has further intensified the pressure on himself by describing Saturday’s lunchtime encounter with West Brom as “a must win” as West Ham have slipped into the Premier League’s bottom three.
Heavyweights Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool have all given the Hammers hidings in recent outings with only an extended run in the Capital One Cup affordng fans crumbs of Christmas comfort.

Arsenal came from behind to continue their excellent record against West Ham and reclaim the Premier League’s top spot. Carlton Cole gave the Hammers the lead, but a brace from Theo Walcott and a Lukas Podolski strike turned things around.
Hammers boss Sam Allardyce showed his disappointment with his team’s defeat away at Manchester United by making four changes. Guy Demel, Modibo Maiga, Ravel Morrison and Matthew Taylor all made way as Carlton Cole, Joe Cole, skipper Kevin Nolan and Joey O’Brien came in.
The Gunners fielded ten of the same starting XI that played out a bore draw with Chelsea on Monday – a result which saw them lose top spot. Santi Cazorla replaced the injured Tomas Rosicky in the only alteration made by Arsene Wenger.

Arsenal reclaimed top spot in the Premier League thanks to Theo Walcott’s second half double and a Lukas Podolski strike that downed London rivals West Ham United at Upton Park. The hosts had led through Carlton Cole.
Hammers midfielder Mark Noble was first to work Wojciech Szczesny in the visiting goal, forcing the Pole to palm away a free kick. This followed a start where the visiting defence had to deal with a flurry of crosses.
Spanish stopper Adrian kept out a powerful Santi Cazorla header on 15 minutes when West Ham failed to fully clear their lines from a Gunners corner. Early home side pressure quickly dissolved in customary waves of pressure from Arsene Wenger’s team.
Carlton Cole gave the Hammers some rare respite with hold-up play that invited Mohamed Diame to sting the palms of Szczesny with from long range. Walcott then fired wide...

Marouane Chamakh showed former club West Ham what they were missing as the Moroccan gave Crystal Palace a scrappy and hard fought win over their London rivals.
Long ball tactics and head tennis made for a rather ugly beginning to this crunch London derby. Barry Bannan curled a cross-shot over and Jason Puncheon saw another Palace effort saved by Jussi Jaaskelainen.
West Ham then began passing and almost opened their hosts up with skipper Kevin Nolan touching a through-ball onto a narrowly offside Carlton Cole. Big Sam’s boys quickly took a stranglehold on possession.
A training ground free kick almost caught the home team out on half an hour, but Nolan failed to get proper contact when the ball was lofted in. Carlton Cole then got in behind the Eagles defence, but his low cross just eluded Stewart Downing.

Premier League basement club Crystal Palace entertain West Ham United for the first time in the top flight for over 15 years on Tuesday.
The last five meetings between these two London clubs have come in the Championship with Palace winning the 2004 playoff final. Tony Pulis knows as he prepares for his Eagles home debut that his side have only ever won three league games against the Hammers.
Sam Allardyce’s West Ham are one of a clutch of sides hovering three points above the relegation zone. Victory in this capital city derby will take his team up to 11th place for time being.
It would be a precious time for Palace to pick up their third win of the campaign and move off the bottom. Their form, however, gives fans little festive cheer. The Hammers meanwhile ended a winless run stretching five matches with victory over Fulham at the weekend.

Norwich and West Ham are struggling of late. The former are certainly in worse form, and manager Chris Hughton knows he’s running out of time to turn the club around before the board will consider relieving him of his duties. He’s not been helped by the lack of goals from his two summer signings Gary Hooper and Rocky Van Wolfswinkel, and hopes the former can finally kick-start his Norwich career this weekend.
Big Sam also has goal troubles with West Ham. The side are greatly paying the price for over-relying on Andy Carroll, who’s been out all season, without having a viable replacement. As a result, the Hammers have often named a starting XI without a recognised striker, or with midfielder Kevin Nolan pushed higher up the pitch. It’s a game that doesn’t promise many...

Romelu Lukaku came off the bench to grab an 85th minute winner for Everton, extending their unbeaten start to the season. It was heartbreak for West Ham and Mark Noble at Upton Park, as the Irons captain scored from the spot to give his side the lead for the second time, only to get sent off soon after.
Leighton Baines scored two free kicks from near identical positions as the Toffees kept up their unbeaten record against the Hammers, with this result making it twelve consecutive games without defeat against their London opponents. Ravel Morrison’s deflected drive had given West Ham the lead.
The first significant chance had come after just five minutes when an Everton counter led to Jussi Jaaskelainen saving a Kevin Mirallas shot.
On 31 minutes, the ball went out to Matt Jarvis on the left. The England winger cut inside, ghosted past two men and laid the ball to Ravel Morrison.

The stars came out in force at St. James’ Park last night as almost 51,000 fans paid tribute to one of Newcastle United’s loyalist servants.
Some of the biggest celebrities in the Magpies’ history turned out for Steve Harper’s testimonial, and faced an AC Milan side packed with legends of their own.
Celebrated names such as Alan Shearer, Faustino Asprilla and David Ginola all donned the black and white shirt one more time to mark 20 years of service from the goalkeeper.
And the Italians weren’t short of household names themselves, with Paolo Maldini, Franco Baresi and Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio all featuring on an emotional night on Tyneside.
The game itself, which ended goalless, was settled by a penalty shootout that saw the Rossoneri’s old boys triumph. But the outcome was of little importance on a evening that saw all proceeds handed to local charities.

On a night when the life of West Ham and England legend Bobby Moore was immaculately celebrated by all present, Upton Park was home to an exciting London derby that did the 1966 world cup winning captain proud.
West Ham made a lively start to the game and the first real test for either goalkeeper came in the 10th minute, when Matthew Jarvis cut inside and shot low to Hugo Lloris’ right, but the Frenchman was equal to it and held it well.
Almost immediately, Spurs countered quickly and Aaron Lennon came close to putting the Lilywhites one up.
But it was that man Gareth Bale, in the same attack, who found the net first, side-stepping James Collins and burying the ball in to the bottom left from 20 yards after 13 minutes.

Last season Swansea made a name for their style of play however goals were always lacking. A total of 44 goals scored all season was the fourth lowest in the league but with Michael Laudrup in charge things are about to change.
The unexpected goalfest at Loftus Road is a sign of things to come for Laudrup’s team. Striker Danny Graham failed to score in the five goal drubbing but has looked sharp in pre-season, new boy Michu has turned the heads of many with his two goals and Swansea’s pacey wingers are showing a keen eye for the back of the net too.
The Swans’ opposition for their first home game of the season is play-off promoted West Ham United.

Update: West Ham have issued a denial to BBC’s story on Sky Sports News
West Ham United have agreed a £2 million loan fee for Liverpool and England striker Andy Carroll, according to BBC Sport.
The loan move is a “view to a permanent transfer” for a further £17 million, should The Hammers avoid relegation next season and stay in the Premier League.
However according to reports, Carroll does not want to leave Liverpool on a permanent basis to join West Ham. His first choice would be to stay at Liverpool and be given a chance to prove himself to his new manager but as Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers doesn’t see a place for him in his side, he is resigned to exiting Anfield.

West Ham United have made a record bid for Liverpool striker Andy Carroll, according to BBC Sport.
They say the offer could “potentially break the club’s transfer record” with an initial loan bid with a commitment to buy the 23-year-old England striker next summer in a deal worth more than £15 million. This looks to be similar to the offer Newcastle United made 11 days ago, though the Hammers eventual transfer fee will need to be higher than the Toon’s previous offer if they are to tempt Liverpool into cutting their losses on the forward.
Although Carroll is now resigned to leaving Anfield this summer as new boss Brendan Rodgers does not believe he fits into his plans for the future, BBC Sport believes he does not consider a move to the Hammers as a serious option. Previous reports suggest he would be keen on a move back to his...

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has insisted that there is “absolutely, no way” Andy Carroll with leave the club on loan this summer.
The newly installed Anfield boss has ruled out any chance of Carroll leaving on a temporary basis, but has revealed that the club will consider any permanent offers they receive for their big number 9.
Last weekend, Carroll’s former side and hometown club Newcastle United offered a “loan with a view to permanent deal” deal for their former talisman, which was turned down immediately by Liverpool who would rather sell the England striker outright.
Carroll cost £35 million for Liverpool 18 months ago in the move from the North East to Merseyside that made him the subject of the highest paid transfer for a British footballer in history. However Rodgers doesn’t see how Carroll can fit in his style of play for the new season and would prefer he...

2012/13 is going to be a huge season for Newcastle United, with European competition back on the agenda, and the distinct possibility of a top four finish if manager Alan Pardew can take all of the positives of last season, trim the superfluous players, add a few more and kick-on for an equally or even more impressive finish next season. That also means that this pre-season is a big opportunity for Pardew to get his squad ready for the season ahead, trying out new combinations on the pitch, giving game-time to squad players and generally seeing what areas of development he and the coaching team can identify.
With the first pre-season friendly out of the way, and the general consensus, including from Alan Pardew himself, is that the game was little more than a dressed-up run-out, little real analysis will go into it before Newcastle face next opponents Monaco on Monday.

In the wake of Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers’ apparent refusal to confirm that striker Andy Carroll has a future at Anfield, the media yesterday whipped themselves up into a frenzy with speculation linking him to clubs as diverse as AC Milan and West Ham United. But one question that really needs to be posed at this stage concerns the possibility of Carroll returning to the club at which he made his name before convincing Liverpool to part with £35m for his services last January.
It may have seemed unthinkable given his reception during Newcastle’s impressive 2-0 victory over his current side at St James Park, but there are now rumbles that Newcastle United might consider a move for Carroll to be preferrable over their long-term pursuit of Twente’s Dutch striker Luuk de Jong. With the Eredivisie side seemingly pricing their star asset out of a move, with a £16m fee suggested,...

West Ham United are plotting a loan offer to Liverpool for striker Andy Carroll, according to widespread media reports on Wednesday.
Hammers boss Sam Allarydce, who has a history of making ambitious and surprising signings from his days at Bolton Wanderers, is keen to land the 23-year-old Anfield flop, believing he can link the Geordie up once again with Kevin Nolan at Upton Park. Close friends Carroll & Nolan formed a deadly partnership together in their two seasons together in the Championship and Premier League for Newcastle United and Allardyce believes the link-up will once again get the best out of the England international.
Italian giants AC Milan are reportedly also interested in taking Carroll on loan to Serie A after it emerged that the Merseyside club are looking to offload Carroll after a disappointing 18 months since his record-breaking £35 million transfer from Newcastle in January 2010.

Although Tim Krul and Fabricio Coloccini were more consistent and Papiss Cisse went goal crazy in the second half of the season and fired The Magpies into Europe, it’s hard to argue against Demba Ba being Newcastle United’s most important player for the 2012/13 season. Take away his 16 goals for the campaign and his fine form at the start of the season and United would have finished midtable… if that.
Ba was simply sensational, picking up the void that key players Andy Carroll and Kevin Nolan’s departures from Newcastle had left in the firing line and becoming an instant Geordie hero whose name was sung in every Newcastle game he played in throughout the country by the Toon Army faithful. Ba is a much loved figure on Tyneside… but this makes it all the more hard for the fans (including me) to understand the following sentence…

With Newcastle United currently sitting in fifth in the Premier League, equal on points with Tottenham above them, and two clear of Chelsea below, despite the generally held pre-season expectation that the team would struggle having shed the likes of Jose Enrique, Kevin Nolan and Joey Barton, people are beginning to turn more attention to Alan Pardew’s men in the North East. And why not? Newcastle have made a mockery of those expectations, making pundits and fans eat their words in turn, and finding success not only on the pitch, but also on the books with finances looking impressively healthy.
Success invariably courts envy, and while other clubs may look to acquiring Newcastle’s on-field talents as a solution to stealing some of that success, they would do better to replicate the model for growth that the backroom and management teams – including much-maligned owner Mike Ashley and openly hated...

West Ham kept up their terrific away form with an outstanding victory at Oakwell as they took apart Barnsley by securing a 4-0 win.
This was a match in which Sam Alladyce’s side had to win. And they did, in style.
Skipper Kevin Nolan opened the scoring inside the first seven minutes after pouncing on a Matt Taylor corner for his 11th of the campaign.
Barnsley’s out-of-form hitman Craig Davies had a long range shot parried by Robert Green moments later and that was the closest that the Tykes came in the whole 90 minutes.
Nicky Maynard doubled the Hammers’ lead in the 23rd minute with a long range strike that beat Barnsley stopper David Button.
It was game over at this point, and the Londoners added insult to injury 10 minutes before the break with Mark Noble taking advantage of a Button error.
And former Oakwell star Ricardo Vaz...

24 year-old Dijon Fc attacking midfielder Benjamin Corgnet is a transfer target for Newcastle United, according to reports out in France.
The radio station Rmc Sports say the French midfielder was subject of a £4.5 million transfer bid from The Magpies in early January but Dijon, who are struggling 3 points off the drop zone in the French first division, turned down the offer to help keep a key player in their relegation battle.
Reports today suggest the club will be happy to offload Corgent for a similar price in the summer with Liverpool and Arsenal also keeping tabs on the player.
Dijon manager Patrice Carteron said when he rejected the £4.5 million offer last month;
“We had a direct approach from Newcastle, but he is of the same approach as us and wants to continue to grow and play a full season in Ligue 1.”
“We would allow him to leave at the end of the season.
