Perhaps known better by many as the brother-in-law of the late great
Jerry Quarry, "Irish" Mike Nixon pursued a very colorful boxing career
of his own. After only seven amateur bouts, Irish Mike turned to the
pros with an impressive string of wins in the middleweight division.
Not only did Nixon slug out forty professional bouts but was involved
in exhibitions with both Mike and Jerry Quarry, and the world's
greatest middleweight, Sugar Ray Robinson...Nixon fought in thirty main
event fights his first ten rounder coming just three days prior to his
19th birthday. Irish Mike's last bout was against the great Vito
Antuofermo. Since retiring from the ring, Nixon claims he has "done it
all. . . from car sales to hay bales . . and all honest work." Mike
acknowledges an unspeakable pain at the loss of his friend and mentor
Jerry Quarry, who passed away in 1999 as the result of brain damage
incurred in the ring.
