Fumi Nikaido could be one of several “Shōgun” stars who go on to earn Emmy nominations for their career-best work in the FX series.
Adapted from James Clavell‘s 1975 historical book of the same name, Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks’ limited series follows multiple factions all vying for control over the five Regents in Japan at the end of the 16th century. Meanwhile, a British sailor (Cosmo Jarvis) begins a brand new life after becoming shipwrecked in Japan and entering the service of Hiroyuki Sanada‘s Lord Yoshii Toranaga.
Jarvis and Sanada are both competing for lead actor nominations and so, too, is Anna Sawai. Nikaido, meanwhile, is one of several supporting players who are looking for an Emmy citation for their work on the show. True crime is getting more and more entertaining by the day and I don’t if that’s a good thing or a bad one. We have another brilliant true crime drama series, Under the Bridge, created by Quinn Shephard. Based on a 2005 book of the same name by Rebecca Godfrey, the Hulu series is set in 1997 and it follows the murder case of a 14-year-old girl which we see through the eyes of local police officer Cam Bentland and the author Godfrey. Under the Bridge stars Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough in the lead roles with Virtika Gupta, Chloe Guidry, Javon “Wanna” Walton, and Izzy G starring in supporting roles. Max announced on Friday that the acclaimed wrestling drama The Iron Claw from Cannes and Sundance prize-winning filmmaker Sean Durkin (Martha Marcy May Marlene) will begin streaming exclusively on the platform through its output deal with distributor A24 on May 10.
Based on a true story, The Iron Claw follows the rise and fall of the Von Erich family, a dynasty of wrestlers who made a huge impact on the sport from the 1960s to the present day. Written and directed by Durkin, the film also stars Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson, Holt McCallany, Maura Tierney and Lily James, among others. A24 financed the pic alongside Access Entertainment and BBC Films. In addition to A24, producers included Tessa Ross,...

"I have always had this knowledge that I could make any man fall in love with me if I really tried... And I think maybe it's ruined my life." This line really cuts deep. A24 has revealed an official trailer for an indie drama titled Janet Planet, marking the feature directorial debut of playwright Annie Baker. This first premiered at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival last year, playing at the New York Film Festival (NYFF) and this year's Berlin Film Festival a few months ago. In her debut feature film, the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Annie Baker captures a child’s experience of time passing and the ineffability of a daughter falling out of love with her mother as she spends more time with her. The story follows 11-year-old Lacy, who spends the summer of 1991 at home, enthralled by her own imagination and the attention of her mother, Janet. As the months pass,...

The bond between a mother and daughter is, for lack of a better term, always fraught.
In playwright-turned-filmmaker Annie Baker’s feature directorial debut, that relationship is pulled to its edges as “Mare of Easttown” Emmy winner Julianne Nicholson plays Janet, a mother called upon by her preteen daughter Lacy (Zoe Ziegler) to pick her up from summer camp. Lacy’s reason? She’s on the verge of a nervous breakdown. But maybe so is Janet. “Every moment in my life is hell,” Lacy tells her mother.
Baker’s “Janet Planet” follows Janet through Lacy’s eyes as the mother-daughter duo delve into a codependent balance onscreen, with Janet cycling through relationships and other relatable ups and downs. Elias Koteas, Sophie Okonedo, and Will Patton also star in the feature, which is set in 1991.

How does a girl perceive her mother? Lucy is facing that reality in the new film “Janet Planet.” Set in the early ‘90s, this coming-of-age film highlights how complicated the relationship can be. The A24 film hails from Annie Baker, who previously wrote an episode of the Prime Video series “I Love Dick.”
The Playlist’s Gregory Ellwood noted the connection between Baker’s direction and Maria von Hausswolf’s cinematography, calling it “exquisite.” “Whether it’s a close-up of a dangling earring or Janet getting swept up in line dancing, the perspective is always intentional,” he wrote after its 2023 Telluride premiere.

Having trouble predicting who will win Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actress at the 2024 Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their first set of predictions, and they say the trophy will go to Jennifer Jason Leigh (“Fargo”). The other potential nominees at this early stage are Aja Naomi King (“Lessons in Chemistry”), Sandra Oh (“The Sympathizer”), Diane Lane (“Feud: Capote vs. the Swans”), Kali Reis (“True Detective: Night Country”) and Andrea Riseborough (“The Regime”) — but that could all change in the coming months.
As of this writing, four out of our six Emmy Experts predict a victory for Leigh: Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Peter Travers (ABC), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby) and Thelma Adams (Gold Derby). The end of “peak TV” — the never-ending expansion in the number of drama series being produced worldwide — could be a good thing, according to Wayne Garvie, President of International Production at Sony Pictures Television (Spt).
Speaking at a keynote at TV festival Series Mania on Wednesday, Garvie noted that despite the sharp decline in commissions for scripted TV in the U.S., “more drama is being commissioned now than most times in human history” and argued that in the boom times, “a lot of stuff that got made that people didn’t get to see (or) didn’t know it was happening.”
The new, post-peak era Garvie described as going “back to the future,” with producers doing more shows with traditional free-to-air broadcasters that they sell to channels worldwide. He highlighted the Sony’s new period drama Dope Girls, starring Mare of Easttown‘s Julianne Nicholson, Eliza Scanlen (Sharp Objects...

A dedicated actor whose self-inflicted preparation process for “Ammonite” included freezing nightly in an isolated shack by the beach, Kate Winslet couldn’t have gone method for “The Regime” if she tried.
For one thing, the heavily guarded but tiny European nation over which her authoritarian caricature — the vindictive, touchy, and tyrannical Chancellor Elena Vernham — rules with a hypochondriacal fist can’t be visited by foreigners. Why not? Well, it’s geographically precarious, politically and socially fraught, and, outside of HBO’s international jurisdiction, it doesn’t exist.
“I didn’t look to any specific figures for inspiration because I didn’t think that would be a sensible choice,” Winslet told IndieWire of her starring part in the buzzy spring miniseries and satire. “Honestly, she isn’t like anyone I’d ever come across before anywhere at all.”

Exclusive: Bad Wolf is adopting a U.S.-style pilot strategy on BBC drama Dope Girls by finishing episode one months before the rest so that it can be shopped at the London and LA TV Screenings.
Jane Tranter, who co-runs the Doctor Who and His Dark Materials producer, said this is the first time the Sony-backed indie has taken such an approach but it is being driven by the necessities of the current drama market.

MacArthur Fellow Annie Baker is an acclaimed playwright and theater director, winning the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for drama for “The Flick,” among other accolades. Now, with the release of the delicate mother-daughter drama “Janet Planet,” both written and directed by Baker, the esteemed theater veteran makes her directorial film debut.
Baker began writing “Janet Planet” in the early days of the pandemic, completing it in December 2020. However, for Baker, this project was a long time in the making. “I’ve been thinking about writing this story which explores a very particular kind of love for a long time, and I even had some notes on it from like 20 years ago, sparse ones, but still, from college.”

Nicolas Cage appears in everyone’s dreams in, er, Dream Scenario. It’s coming to DVD and Blu-ray in March! More here:
It’ll be a sad day when Nicolas Cage eventually retires from acting. Thankfully, that day is still (hopefully) far away, given that Cage said last December that has at least another three or four films left in him.
He made those comments during the press tour for Dream Scenario, a film that follows a man who becomes an overnight celebrity, quite literally, after he pops up in everyone’s dreams.
The film was written and directed by Kristoffer Borgli and released in UK cinemas in November. Backed by A24 and produced by Ari Aster, Dream Scenario received positive reviews from critics and many hailed the film as some of Cage’s best work in years.
If you missed the film on its theatrical run, there’s good...

Julianne Nicholson isn’t holding her breath for a “Mare of Easttown” Season 2, but still would “100 percent” return to the HBO series if given the chance.
Nicholson, who won an Emmy along with co-stars Kate Winslet and Evan Peters, told People the long-awaited second season is “not impossible” but also not currently in the works. “Mare of Easttown” starred Winslet as a Pennsylvania detective investigating a series of missing girls. The show was created by Brad Ingelsby.
“It’s not impossible,” Nicholson said of a second season. “You never know.”
She added that she would “100 percent” reprise her role, “if there [was a Season 2] and Kate still was Mare and Jean [Smart] was her mom and Brad wrote it.”
However, Nicholson added, “I’m definitely not waiting for it. I’m not losing sleep over it. But if that was happening and I was invited to join, yeah, definitely.”

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Dream Scenario, A24’s surreal dark comedy from Norwegian filmmaker Kristoffer Borgli that plays off Nicolas Cage’s decades-long permeation of the imagination.
In the buzzy Toronto Film Festival title produced by Square Peg — the banner of Hereditary and Beau Is Afraid helmer Ari Aster — Cage stars as Paul Matthews, an ordinary biology professor whose life takes an unexpected turn when he starts appearing in the dreams of people worldwide. Initially amused by the situation, Paul’s attitude later becomes one of horror and frustration, as peoples’ dreams of him turn into nightmares, and he’s ostracized by the public for actions taken only in their minds.
Dream Scenario marks the English-language debut of the Oslo-born Borgli, who broke out with his Cannes-premiering 2022 dark comedy Sick of Myself. In a September appearance at Deadline’s Toronto Studio,...

Dream Scenario is more of a nightmare for Nicholas Cage’s character, in this darkest of comedies from Norwegian writer/director Kristoffer Borgli, a social satire commenting on the power and irrational nature of social media. While Cage’s character is not having a good day, actor Nicholas Cage looks like he is having a grand old time, relishing this role as a hapless guy at the center of this outside-the-mainstream dark comedy.
Like his role as a backwoods recluse in Pig, Cage is anything but prettied up for this part, playing an aging, balding professor whose ordinary guy life is upended when random people start seeing him in their dreams.
At first, Cage’s middle-aged academic is sort of flattered by the attention, although he has done nothing to cause his dream appearances. The biology professor...

This article contains minor Dream Scenario spoilers.
The most remarkable thing about Professor Paul Matthews is how unremarkable he is. The latest addition to Nicolas Cage’s oeuvre of oddballs and nuts is, in fact, impressively forgettable. So what makes him so curiously haunting after you’ve seen Dream Scenario? Cage himself is obviously a major factor. With a frequently perspiring bald cap around the temples, hunched shoulders, and a twitchy gaze that betrays the desperation of a lonely child in a middle-aged body, the veteran thespian has built a darkly amusing portrait of neediness which walks right up to the fine border between character and caricature, and gives it a frantic, pleading wave.
It’s a brilliant creation, and it is implemented in one of the cruelest comedies of the last couple of years. Because in spite of Paul Matthews’ lack of distinction, he is the man of your dreams…...

Chicago – Nicolas Cage makes a welcome return to Charlie Kaufman-like mind bending drama in “Dream Scenario.” He stars as Paul Matthews, a bald and schlubby college professor always clad in an ever present winter coat. His unremarkable life takes a turn when he mysteriously begins appearing in millions of people’s dreams.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
He’s got a wife and two teen daughters, and makes a good living but hasn’t achieved the level of respect and credit he believes he deserves. Cage’s Professor Paul sees himself as a genius, albeit one with a dad bod and no hair. The rest of the world doesn’t pay him much mind at all, and if they do he’s usually welcomed with the kind of lack of enthusiasm usually reserved for tax lawyers.
”Dream Scenario” is in theaters November 17th. Featuring Nicolas Cage, Julianne Nicholson, Tim Meadows, Lily Bird and Dylan Baker.

Plot: A mild-mannered academic (Nicolas Cage) discovers that he’s the center of a strange phenomenon, with people worldwide suddenly seeing him in their dreams. At first, thrilled with the attention and sudden fame, he finds himself despised and “cancelled” when the dreams turn violent.
Review: Dream Scenario is a very “now” movie, with it a blazing satire of sudden fame and “cancel culture,” with director Kristoffer Borgli showing utter contempt for both. It’s the perfect vehicle for Nicolas Cage, as perhaps more than any actor, his likeness has been commodified over the years, being used and manipulated in meme after meme in a way that’s totally out of his control.
Likewise, his character, Paul Matthews, has no control over how people view him. Sporting a bald pate, a beard and the kind of nasal voice he used in Peggy Sue Got Married, Cage fully inhabits the role...

Nicolas Cage delivers one of his best performances in the fantasy black comedy Dream Scenario, from Norwegian writer-director Kristoffer Borgli, which takes savage satirical swipes at viral fame and cancel culture. It also serves as a thematic follow-up to Borgli’s previous film, Sick of Myself, a superb arthouse horror which dealt with extreme narcissism and the pursuit of fame at any cost.
Cage plays boring, middle-aged college professor Paul Matthews, whose efforts in the field of evolutionary biology haven’t led to the sort of recognition he had hoped for, partly due to his own laziness in actually getting around to writing a book. At home, he’s supported by his understanding wife, Janet (Julianne Nicholson), though he’s all but ignored by his two teenage daughters (Lily Bird and...

If dreams could predict the future, Nicolas Cage and film team should be toasting awards success with Dream Scenario for its on-point and absurdly funny representation of the subconscious mind, fame and social media and cancel culture.
Like the random firings of neurons that form dream scenarios, this compelling collective tale of utter ‘ordinariness’ escalating into extreme ‘extraordinariness’ follows unremarkable, middle-aged Professor Paul Matthews (Cage) as he navigates appearing in people’s dreams like some divine intervention, from family to total strangers.
The film opens with Matthews raking leaves by a swimming pool, simply observing, as chaos swirls all around him. In reality, the scholar lives a quiet, modest life and is happily married with two daughters. However, the mediocre-achieving biologist has one nagging regret that he missed his chance of academic notoriety with his ‘ant-elligence’, a theory that is then robbed before his very eyes.
Feeling helpless and dejected,...

This is a surreal fantasy-satire about the unsafe space of social media and the nature of viral fame, something to be aspired to – or dreamed of – by everyone: the democratised and accessible stardom that can happen to anyone, despite or in some way because of their lack of achievement. This kind of fame can be alchemised from ordinariness, a fame produced and consumed on smartphones and capable of getting inside people’s heads because they can imagine, in fact want to imagine, the same thing happening to them.

"Dream Scenario" is a new comedy feature, written and directed by Kristoffer Borgli, starring Nicolas Cage, Julianne Nicholson, Michael Cera, Tim Meadows, Dylan Gelula and Dylan Baker releasing November 10, 2023 in theaters:
".... 'Paul Matthews' (Cage) is an unremarkable biology professor. A friend runs into him and says he was in her dreams, not doing anything but just walking past, and she wants to write a blog about it. In his class a couple of his students also admit to dreaming with Paul in them.
"His friend 'Richard' finds out at a dinner party that his wife and a guest have both also had Paul passively in their dreams.
"As the story attracts attention online, the publicity soon expands the attendance at his class and Paul welcomes his new found status, until the shit hits the fan..."

About halfway through playwright Annie Baker’s self-assured and pitch-perfect directorial debut Janet Planet, 11-year-old Lacy (Zoe Ziegler) rolls over in bed and turns to her mother Janet (Julianne Nicholson) with an innocent prompt. “You know what’s funny?” she asks. “Every moment of my life is hell.” At such a gentle moment, in such a casual way, she delivers a melodramatic gut-punch. You can’t help choking out a laugh.
Throughout this existential comedy, lighthearted coming-of-age drama, and sublime slice of Western Massachusetts life, Lacy has a habit of expressing herself in unintentionally funny, wounding ways to her mother. It’s a characteristic that’s baked into their codependent relationship that Lacy struggles to maintain in the months before she begins sixth grade. An outcast amongst her peers, she tests her mother’s patience and devotion, threatening to kill herself if she doesn’t help her escape summer camp.

The Pulitzer prize-winning playwright’s muted, yet lingering, first film follows Julianne Nicholson’s single mother in the 90s
The first shot of Janet Planet, like much of the Pulitzer-winning playwright Annie Baker’s debut film, hints at something ominous and grand. It’s dusk; a young girl runs down a field toward an old house, the air teeming with cricket chirps and birdsong. The long shot and soundscape are wonderfully lush and evocative, and also typical for a vast swath of the suburban to rural US. “I’m going to kill myself,” 11-year-old Lacy (a remarkable Zoe Ziegler) tells her mother on the phone, a statement that would seem horribly portentous if not for her clarification: “I’m going to kill myself if you don’t come pick me up.” From summer camp.
Childhood boredom, loneliness, homesickness, the arduously languid days of summer – these are the opening notes of Baker’s nostalgic,...
