You made it through the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Directors Guild Awards, and the Producers Guild Awards, too. The wait for the Oscars is almost over, but one more major guild had yet to give out its trophies before the Academy Awards. Tonight, Hollywood’s top writers came together for the Writers Guild of America Awards, which honored the finest achievements in film and television writing.
On the film side, the nominees were actually quite different from what you’ll see at the Oscars next week. In the Original Screenplay category, “Licorice Pizza,” “Don’t Look Up,” and “King Richard” were still nominated, but “Belfast” and “The Worst Person in the World” were replaced with “Being the Ricardos.” The Adapted Screenplay category was even more distinct, with only two Oscar contenders (“Dune” and “Coda”) nominated.

Sunday’s 74th Writers Guild of America Awards will wrap up the guild season, along with the American Society of Cinematographers Awards. Will the winners be an Oscar preview?
“Licorice Pizza,” written by Paul Thomas Anderson, and “Coda,” by Sian Heder, are favored to win Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay, respectively. However, they are not facing off against many of their Oscar rivals as the WGA’s rules have rendered several scripts ineligible, including Oscar nominees “Belfast” and “The Worst Person in the World” in original, and “Drive My Car,” “The Lost Daughter” and “The Power of the Dog” in adapted. But if they both prevail, they will have bagged the two top industry prizes as they won at BAFTA last weekend right in the middle of final Oscar voting (it ends Tuesday).

“Only Murders in the Building” just killed it on Hulu. The Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez-starring whodunnit just had the most-watched premiere day for any comedy series in Hulu’s history, a spokesperson for the streaming service told TheWrap.
Yes, that includes “Seinfeld” — and about 400+ additional comedies that have streamed to-date on Hulu.
Of course, Hulu had far fewer subscribers when reruns of “Seinfeld” premiered on the platform in 2015. When the streaming service announced it had acquired those rights, the platform had about 9 million subscribers. Today, Hulu has nearly 43 million subs.
This whole internal-record-breaking thing seems to be going around at Hulu. “Nine Perfect Strangers” recently became the most-watched Hulu Original series premiere ever, and movie “Vacation Friends” just had the best opening weekend for a Hulu Original film.
“Nine Perfect Strangers” had a stronger premiere day than “Only Murders” did, we’re told. But again, different genres.

ABC’s comedy pilot Steps is staying alive. ABC Studios has picked up the options of the entire cast of the project, starring Once Upon a Time alumna Ginnifer Goodwin alongside Kyle Bornheimer, Barry Rothbart, Ryan Michelle Bathe, Julie Hagerty and Cameron Boyce.
Steps, based on the Swedish format Bonus Family, is currently being retooled by the pilot’s writer Kristin Newman (The Muppets). Picking up the cast certainly is a promising sign though there has been no decision on reshooting the pilot yet.
Steps, from ABC Studios and studio-based Mandeville TV, revolves around four adults in three houses raising three kids after two divorces — together. The pilot was in serious contention for a series pickup in May and was also brought up in the immediate aftermath of ABC’s cancellation of Roseanne, when the network considered picking up another comedy series to fill the void. (ABC ultimately replaced Roseanne with spinoff The Conners.

The 2018 pilot season is shaping up to be a landmark year for women behind the camera.
Female creators and directors saw gains virtually across the board, as networks ramp up efforts to include more women in the pilot process. As Variety previously reported, the Time’s Up and Me Too movements have played important roles this season, with the networks all looking for ways to increase female representation.
According to multiple TV literary agents who spoke with Variety, there was a clear shift within the networks this year to increase the number of women behind the camera, particularly in the director’s chair. One source also noted that the studios exerted “immense pressure” to increase the number of female directors this season.
ABC has 13 female creators on 9 of their 23 pilots this year, up from 9 creators in 2017. Of those, five are comedies, including originals from Liz Meriwether and J.J. Philbin, Diablo Cody,...

Tonight marks the season finale of The Muppets on ABC. The network wasn't happy with the new Tuesday night series' ratings in the fall so they replaced series showrunner Bob Kushell with Galavant's showrunner, Kristin Newman. Newman made some changes to the series but they don't seem to have made a difference. The ratings hit new lows when the show returned from its winter hiatus.

Whoa. I think … I actually liked this episode. I mean, the show finally remembered that Camilla exists. Though my heart broke when Camilla left Gonzo, thereby ending television's most romantic relationship, I am thrilled that she's now on the show. Even if #Gonzmilla doesn't become a major storyline, this feels like confirmation that new showrunner Kristin Newman wants The Muppets to have more heart, more brains, and more in common with Muppets of old than it did before. On the other hand, we're still stuck with the mockumentary format, which should probably be straight-up banned.Besides asserting the show's credibility within the Muppets' franchise, "A Tail of Two Piggies" also manages to stick together as an episode. The characters with conflicting motivations feel true to their identifies, the jokes are actually funny, and the guest stars are deployed exactly as often as needed. The episode also does a great job...

Last month, I spoke with new Muppets showrunner Kristin Newman about her plans to bring the characters back to their roots. Those ideas all sounded promising, but how well were they executed? Well, tonight's episode was the first she was involved with from beginning to end (though she did some rewriting on the last episode to air back in December), and I have some thoughts on whether it lived up to expectations coming up just as soon as I sell oven mitts on Etsy... Self-awareness has always been a key part of the Muppets formula. The Muppet Show was a backstage showbiz comedy, The Muppet Movie featured the characters making and watching a movie about how they first met (and the script for the movie itself becomes a plot device), Kermit and the others in The Great Muppet Caper commented about what part of the movie they were in, and...

The curious case of The Muppets has been puzzling critics and viewers alike — who the hell is Denise, and where the hell is Camilla? — since the mockumentary-style comedy premiered on ABC in the fall to a lukewarm response. The show, which chronicles the adorable anthropomorphic characters in Los Angeles as they work on the late-night talk show Up Late With Miss Piggy, was noticeably more adult in narrative and oddly morose in its overall tone. But instead of muttering a signature Beaker meep meep and continuing on with production, showrunner Bob Kushell was let go, soon replaced by Galavant showrunner Kristin Newman to give it a Dr. Bunsen Honeydew-calculated change. And what are those changes, you may ask? In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Newman discussed at length about how her main goal will be to make the show less mean-spirited and instead fill it with...

Last spring, ABC boss Paul Lee boasted of one of his new comedies, "This is not your grandmother's 'Muppets.'" At press tour this weekend, Lee admitted "The Muppets" needed some creative tweaking, because, "We didn’t quite feel it had the joy, the laughter, and the heart we were looking for." In other words, they now want something very much like your grandmother's "Muppets," which is as it should be. The version of "The Muppets" that debuted in the fall had funny moments, but for the most part the characters seemed cynical and bitter and occasionally mean in a way that doesn't at all fit what Jim Henson's creations should be doing. The last couple of episodes that aired seemed to finally be bringing the sweetness back to the Muppets, and it sounds like new showrunner Kristin Newman (who arrived in time to do some rewriting of the...

ABC's freshman comedy series "The Muppets" has undergone a major shake-up as co-creator, executive producer and showrunner Bob Kushell has left the project with Kristin Newman ("Galavant") in negotiations to succeed him as new showrunner.
The show is undergoing a creative overhaul which will be seen on screens after the series takes a hiatus following its tenth episode. The remaining six episodes will air in the Spring and are said to be treated as a relaunch.
Kushell co-wrote the original Muppets presentation with "The Big Bang Theory" co-creator/executive producer Bill Prady. The show was rushed to air before its concept and tone had been formed - resulting in reviews expressing great concern over its creative direction. Ratings for the show started strong but have since plunged even as it remains Tuesday's highest-rated new TV show among Adults 18-49 (2.6).

In an unpredicted turn of events, The Simpsons alum Bob Kushell has left his role as a co-showrunner for The Muppets series…
Here’s an unexpected one. Bob Kushell – one of the executive producers and co-showrunners of ABC’s The Muppets TV show – has departed the series after only six episodes have been aired.
Kushell is well versed in working behind the scenes on successful comedy series, having previously held roles on The Simpsons, 3rd Rock From The Sun, Malcolm In The Middle and Anger Management.
From our perspective, things seemed to be going well for The Muppets. ABC ordered a few more episodes of the adult-skewed series only last week. It remains a mystery, then, exactly why Mr Kushell has walked away.
According to Variety, “Kushell’s departure comes amid reports that he had been clashing over the creative direction of the series with co-showrunner Bill Prady.

One of the most anticipated new TV shows of the 2015-16 season, The Muppets premiered with great ratings. Unfortunately, the new adult take on the classic characters isn't everyone's cup of tea and the numbers have dropped more than 50%. ABC ordered three more episodes but, with this ratings trajectory, the series could easily be cancelled.
The network is replacing series co-creator co-creator, executive producer and showrunner Bob Kushell. Word is that he and co-showrunner Bill Prady had different ideas about the creative direction of the series. Galavant's Kristin Newman is currently in negotiations to replace him as part of her overall deal with ABC Studios.

"It's time to play the music, it's time to light the lights" -- or as ABC said in an announcement earlier today, "It's time to change the music, it's time to change the lights." Deadline and Spinoff Online are reporting that "The Muppets" show will get a soft reboot when it returns from hiatus in the spring. Deadline is also reporting that showrunner Bob Kushell has stepped down as executive producer of the series, leaving room for "Galavant" producer Kristin Newman to possibly replace him. "The Big Bang Theory" producer Bill Prady is still set to stay on board as co-executive producer. This news comes as a surprise, considering the show was just picked up for a full season a few days ago. As of right now, "The Muppets" will air 10 episodes this fall, then will finish its first season with six more episodes in the spring. The big question about the soft reboot is,...

For The Muppets, it’s time to get things started — all over again. According to Deadline, the ABC sitcom is dropping showrunner Bob Kushell and replacing him with Galavant co–executive producer Kristin Newman. While the move is apparently motivated in part by tensions between Kushell and Muppets executive producer Bill Prady, ABC is also hoping the showrunner shake-up will be a way to revive the sitcom, which looked like a surefire hit but has struggled amid tepid reviews and precipitously sliding ratings. The plan now, it seems, is to run out the show’s first ten episodes this fall, and then bring it back in the spring for a six-episode mid-season run, which will serve as an unofficial reboot.Off a new start wafts a sort of promise: the Muppets sitcom fans deserve. The show was rushed into production earlier this year, and though it’s been performing all...

The Muppets is undergoing a makeover of Piggy proportions.
Series co-creator Bob Kushell, who has also served as executive producer and showrunner, is out, our sister site Deadline reports, with Kristin Newman (Galavant) in talks to replace him.
What’s more, the second half of the comedy’s freshman season — specifically, the six episodes airing after the show’s midseason hiatus — will reportedly look very different from its first. Per Deadline, the series was rushed to air, leading to a “clash in styles and vision” between Kushell and co-creator/executive producer Bill Prady. The second half of Season 1 is reportedly being considered a “relaunch.

Exclusive: Brillstein Entertainment Partners has kicked off its selling season with three deals at ABC — for comedies from writers Ali Rushfield and Kristin Newman and a drama from Jordon Nardino. All three are executive produced by Robin Schwartz, who joined the company as TV president in June, and hail from ABC Studios where Brillstein is under a deal. Both single-camera comedy juxtapose women in their 30s and their 20s. The Ali Rushfield half-hour centers on a 36-year-old woman/child who finally begins to grow up when she moves in with two 21-year-old girls. Rushfield serves as an executive producer, with Leslie Grossman, who was involved in the project’s inception, serving as consultant. It has been a busy development season for Parks & Recreation co-executive producer Rushfield, repped by UTA. Chuck Review, Season 5, Episode 10, “Chuck Versus Bo”
Written by Kristin Newman
Directed by Jeremiah Chechik
Airs Fridays at 8pm (Et) on NBC
Throughout the tumultuous history of TV and movies, there has been one constant rule. Characters should never talk about taking “one last mission.” Variations on this law include one last score, one last job, or even one last night out with the guys. It’s all bad news. This makes Chuck and Sarah’s decision to take one last spy mission a thorny proposition. They recognize the dire ramifications of this move, but there’s no choice. They must take the chance and go against the conventional wisdom. This pop-culture precedent bodes poorly for their trip to Vail, even if the stakes are worth the risk. The location of a pair of Intersect sunglasses (another one?) is the invaluable prize, and they’re not the only people looking for it.

Chuck Review, Season 5, Episode 4, “Chuck Versus the Business Trip”
Written by Kristin Newman
Directed by Alan Kroeker
Airs Fridays at 8pm (Et) on NBC
During its first three weeks, Chuck’s fifth season relegated many of its supporting characters to the sidelines. It also struggled with resolving the uneven story line of Morgan as the Intersect. Both of those issues disappear quickly in the fourth episode, which moves closer to a return to form. Last week’s cliffhanger had Morgan walking out to his car, unaware of the car bomb waiting for him. There was little tension, especially since NBC ruined the resolution in their previews. During this week’s opener, it is entertaining to watch Morgan perform one of the slowest walks ever to ensure Chuck could save him in time. Following this close call, he’s ready to get rid of the Intersect, and General Beckman is more than happy to oblige.

Knock-knock. It's been a while since we've had an episode of Chuck that focused on Chuck Bartowski's better half, Agent Sarah Walker. We've been given slivers of Sarah's backstory--it was only last season that we learned her true name (that would be "Sam" for those keeping score)--but the enigmatic spy who has stolen Chuck's heart has remained largely an international woman of mystery, her heart encased in stone until Chuck came around. But does Sarah love Chuck for the man he is or the man that she thinks he could be? And with the Intersect out of commission for the foreseeable future, what does that mean for their own? This week's episode of Chuck ("Chuck Versus Phase Three"), written by Kristin Newman and directed by Anton Cropper, did not disappoint on that front, giving Yvonne Strahovski the perfect showcase for her skills, both in terms of silently emoting and kicking butt.
