In the port city of Abadan in southern Iran, 11-year-old orphan Amiro (Madjid Niroumand) gazes out into the Persian Gulf, screaming and waving at the distant ships on the horizon. To Amiro, these vessels represent a sense of freedom that he’s never known yet innately yearns for. His yells are a frequent occurrence in Amir Naderi’s The Runner, and they’re a recurring reminder of Amiro’s unwavering desire to be heard and seen, and to connect with something, anything, outside of a society that has effectively discarded him.
Amiro lives in a region of the world where the oil trade has brought prosperity to few. Like many, he lives among the detritus left behind by the industry’s operations and the callous tourists and businessmen whose shoes he shines for pocket change. Spending his days collecting glass bottles that have been carelessly hurled into the sea and...

The Runner released in the Criterion Collection on March 19th, 2024.
The Criterion Collection is my favorite place to explore and discover amazing cinematic releases that may have slipped under my radar. Straw Dogs, Mona Lisa and White Dog are some of my favorite films, all of which I first watched after they received a physical release through Criterion. The Runner has now joined that list.

A prize ceremony attended by Hamaguchi Ryusuke (“Drive My Car”), Vinod Vidhu Chopra (“3 Idiots”), Amir Naderi and Yonfan on Thursday wrapped up the final event of the debut edition of the Festival of Young Cinema in Macau.
Following a week (Jan. 6-11) of industry-only screenings and presentations of 17 partly-completed films by emerging directors and producers from the region, the prizes went to four work-in-progress films from mainland China and one from Macau.
A jury consisting of producer Jeremy Chua, the Jio Mami Mumbai festival’s artistic director Deepti DCunha, Chinese producer Wang Yang, Chinese screenwriter Wang Yixin and Hong Kong-based executive Esther Yeung determined the in-kind prizes according to the needs of the productions.

“I don’t find the definition of Chinese filmmakers by generation to be a useful tool,” said Marco Mueller, introducing dark satire “The Movie Emperor” as the opening film of the first edition of his Festival of Young Cinema (Asia-Europe) in Macau on Friday. “Much more interesting is the concept of exchange between new and old and between East and West.”
“The new forces of Chinese cinema are present and participating. More than 100 young filmmakers will have the opportunity to meet and interact with names including Amir Naderi, Aleksei German Jr and Yonfan,” Mueller continued. While Macau is these days best known for its high-tech casinos, the former Portuguese colony has long been a venue for international cultural exchange and retains ambitions to restore some of that diversity.

Okinawa Festival Prizes
Taiwanese feature “The Mimicry” was named best picture at the first edition of the Cinema at Sea – Okinawa Pan-Pacific International Film Festival. The festival ran Nov. 23-29 in Okinawa, Japan.
The fantasy-drama film is adapted from a short story by Kao Yi-Feng and directed by Chung Yu Lin. “The film employs a magical yet realistic style, vividly portraying apartment stories by utilizing anthropomorphic techniques that mirror the protagonist’s observations,” said a jury headed by Iran’s Amir Naderi.
The festival’s biggest winner was “Abang Adik,” directed by Malaysia’s Jin Ong, which collected three prizes. It won the audience award, the jury award, and the best leading performance award, which went to actor Wu Kang-Ran. (Wu won the same prize last weekend at the Golden Horse Film Awards.)
The American documentary “One With the Whale,” directed by Jim Wickens and Pete Chelkowski, also received a jury award.

At a certain point you care less about world premieres and fixate mostly on a festival’s repertory slate. And even by the high standards set with Cannes Classics or NYFF Revivals is this year’s Venice Classics in a class of its own. We could start at the new cuts for three of the greatest directors ever: One from the Heart is the latest film to be given a revision by Francis Ford Coppola, following recuts of Apocalypse Now, Twixt, and Dementia 13––to say nothing of restorations like The Rain People, of which we’re hosting the New York premiere next weekend––while Andrei Tarkovsky’s Andrei Rublev will debut in “the reconstruction of the complete original version, which was censored before its release and has never been seen until now.” Meanwhile one of Yasujiro Ozu’s greatest films, There Was a Father, has been amended by “recent rediscovery...

Terrence Malick-Produced Costume Drama ‘The Book of Vision’ to Open Venice Critics’ Week (Exclusive)
Terrence Malick-produced English-language costume drama “The Book of Vision,” directed by Italy’s Carlo Hintermann, will open the Venice Film Festival’s independently-run Critics’ Week section on Sept. 3. (Watch an exclusive clip from the film above.)
Venice, barring complications, is set to be the first major international film event to hold a physical edition after the coronavirus crisis, with dates set for Sept. 2-12.
The high-concept pic — which toplines “Game of Thrones” star Charles Dance, Dutch actress Lotte Verbeek (“Outlander”), and rising Swedish actor Sverrir Gudnason (“Borg/McEnroe”) — focuses on the history of the doctor/patient relationship told from the perspective of a female medical student named Eva (Verbeek).
She leaves graduate school to take a deep dive into the history of medicine and toggles between the present and the 18th century. It’s Hintermann’s feature film debut following several English-language documentaries, including one about Malick, for whom...

Netflix isn’t wasting any time when it comes to adding some notable names to the second season of The Kominsky Method. The streaming giant announced today that Jane Seymour, Jacqueline Bisset and Paul Reiser will join the sophomore season of the Golden Globe-winning comedy in recurring roles.
Seymour will play Madelyn who is described as a seventy-something, well-to-do woman whom Norman (Alan Arkin) had a mad love affair with in the ’60s before he met his wife. After fifty years, the two reunite and start it again. Bisset steps into the role of Gabrielle who is Mindy’s (Sarah Baker) mom and Sandy’s (Michael Douglas) French ex-wife who delights in still being able to push the buttons of her ex-husband. Rounding out the trio is Reiser who plays a sixty-something high school teacher who gets romantically involved with Mindy.
Created by Chuck Lorre, The Kominsky Method was recently renewed for a second season.

Ray Bradbury’s beautiful prose created a chilling dystopian world in Fahrenheit 451 and given the incendiary times we live in, adaptation seems apt. He goes George Orwell one better by erasing history rather than merely rewriting it. HBO was an ideal forum for this, giving the production room to breathe and without the hassle of pacing for commercial breaks.
The 65-year old novel’s bones are well-translated to the screen with Guy Montag (Michael B. Jordan) a dedicated fireman, burning the few remaining books in the world, televising the event to a cheering audience. We watch him begin to question his work and its effects on a world controlled by malevolent forces.
He begins to rebel, aided by Clarisse (Sofia Boutella), and in direct opposition of his superior Captain Beatty (Michael Shannon).

Exclusive: Magic Lantern is billed as a story of love, obsession and cinema and is the first La-shot movie from influential Iranian filmmaker Amir Naderi. The official Venice Film Festival screening is tomorrow here on the Lido where Naderi won the Jaeger-LeCoultre Glory to the Filmmaker Award in 2016. It’s running in the Sconfini section.
Magic Lantern is exec produced by Ramin Bahrani with whom Naderi co-wrote HBO’s Fahrenheit 451 and feature 99 Homes. Mitch embarks on a mission to find the girl, making his way through an increasingly dreamlike La, and encountering an array of strange characters — including a glamorous former film star played by Jacqueline Bisset.

The Coen Brothers’ The Ballad of Buster Scruggs takes feature form for the 2018 Venice Film Festival
In a surprise twist no one saw coming The Coen Brothers’ initial anthology series, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, will be featuring at the 2018 Venice Film Festival as a full-length feature in the competition.
The film, which was declared a Netflix original, is made up of 6 of chaptered stories revolving around the American Frontier. As for chapter plot details, information is hard to find. Tim Blake Nelson stars as Scruggs alongside a cast that features names like Zoe Kazan, Liam Neeson and Tom Waits.
“We’ve always loved anthology movies, especially those films made in Italy in the Sixties which set side-by-side the work of different directors on a common theme,” the Coens said in a statement. “Having written an anthology of Western stories we attempted to do the same, hoping to enlist the best directors working today. It was our great fortune that they both agreed to participate.”

The earliest Amir Naderi feature in the Museum of Modern Art’s recently concluded retrospective, The Runner (1984), was made only a few years after the Iranian Revolution. At that time, censorship was particularly strict, virtually necessitating the absence of women. A film that adheres closely to principles of realism can hardly pretend women don’t exist, and indeed, their absence is felt acutely throughout the film. Based closely on the director’s own life, The Runner follows Amiro, an orphan who does odd jobs—retrieving cans from the sea, shining shoes, selling water—to get by, often while fighting off the tough competition from equally desperate, often older kids. The line between play and competition is thin; the rules of male camaraderie assert themselves at every turn, culminating with the end of the film when a group of children run to retrieve a block of ice atop a barrel near a raging fire.

Michael B. Jordan fights for knowledge and the future of humanity in the first official trailer for HBO’s “Fahrenheit 451.”
Jordan plays protagonist Guy Montag in the film based on Ray Bradbury’s 1953 dystopian novel. In the futuristic world, firefighters are responsible for creating fires instead of putting them out, as they burn books to censor society and limit knowledge.
The trailer opens with Jordan giving a speech to a group of identically-dressed children. “Have any of you guys ever seen one of these bad things for real?” Jordan asks as he clashes two books together. The children respond with a roaring, “No!” Jordan continues, “We burned almost every physical book in the country. So, by the time you guys grow up, there won’t be one book left.”
The clip then shows Michael Shannon, who portrays fire chief Beatty, commanding Jordan’s character to “Burn it.”

Of course, he may have been worried about collecting royalties, but his novel Fahrenheit 451 soon became a part of the curriculum at many schools around the globe, and HBO Films’ adaptation of that novel will air this spring.

It was just a few months ago it was announced that Michael B. Jordan and Michael Shannon would be teaming in an HBO adaptation of Fahrenheit 451. Directed by Ramin Bahrani, who previously helmed Shannon in the underseen 99 Homes, the the first image has now arrived as filming gets underway.
Adapted from the 1953 Ray Bradbury novel, Fahrenheit 451 is a dystopian saga about “firemen” who don’t put out fires, but rather start them by burning books, which are outlawed in the bleak but probably now not-too-distant version of America the characters inhabit. Jordan will play Guy Montag, a fireman who comes to lose faith in his profession once his eyes are opened to the outlawed printed word. Shannon is Captain Beatty, Montag’s mentor.
Bradbury’s novel was previously adapted as a 1966 film directed by François Truffaut, and served as the inspiration for countless other dystopian sci-fi titles, including the gun-fu extravaganza Equilibrium.
