Nisha Pahuja’s Academy Award-nominated documentary, To Kill A Tiger, currently streaming on Netflix, is a tale of the unrelenting courage and unwavering courage of a father seeking justice for his young daughter, who has been raped by three boys from his village. The milieu of this discomforting account of moral rightness is set in a space entrenched in misogynistic practices. Hence, violence against women is tragically a common and normal occurrence and exposes a disturbing gender bias ingrained within societal norms. The troubling reality that comes into focus is how shielding the perpetrators from the people of the village becomes a liability rather than ensuring justice for the victim. Amidst this suffocating atmosphere, the tale of how an individual lacking economic resources combats various human and judicial obstacles is a tale of an oppressed, with humble origins against a fight with a much stronger adversary. There is a conviction,...

Five international-themed films are competing for Best Documentary Feature at the Academy Awards this year, stories set in Uganda, Chile, Tunisia, Ukraine, and India. To Kill a Tiger, which has brought director Nisha Pahuja the first Oscar nomination of her career, centers on a poor couple in the Indian state Jharkhand who bravely fought for justice after their teenage daughter became the victim of a brutal sexual assault.
“It literally is this David and Goliath story,” Pahuja said as she appeared at Deadline’s Contenders Film: The Nominees. “We were surprised, I think, by their courage and their resilience, and we kept thinking at some point maybe they were going to cave.”
Ranjit, father of 13-year-old Kiran, faced intense pressure to drop charges against the three young men accused of attacking his daughter.

Movie star John Wayne had a hug at his final public appearance at the 1979 Academy Awards that he said he wouldn’t miss for anything else in the world. He presented a tough exterior that became popular on the silver screen through his Western and war movie roles. However, Wayne showed a softer center to many of his colleagues, which allowed him to develop deep connections with them.

Yung Chang's This Is Not a Movie is playing on Mubi from April 18 - May 17, 2020 in the Canada Now series.Greetings cinephiles and seekers of truth! I’m thrilled to be presenting my latest film, This Is Not a Movie, with our collaboration with Mubi. This Is Not a Movie is the first feature documentary that I’ve made since my collaborations with Montreal’s EyeSteelFilm. How do you tell a story that spans 40 years of journalism? By assembling a team of creators from producers Anita Lee (Nfb), Allyson Luchak, Nelofer Pazira, and Ingmar Trost to cinematographer Duraid Munajim to editor Mike Munn to my composers Ohad Benchetrit and Justin Small. When I first started researching the film, I imagined that Robert Fisk would be a very somber, brooding, morose character. I thought he would be intimidating. Here’s a dinosaur of journalism, a part of a “lost generation” of reporters,...

Ask anyone to name a female pioneer who studied wild species in their natural habitat in Africa and you’ll get Jane Goodall. But in 1956, four years before primatologist Goodall’s rightfully celebrated work with the chimpanzees started, there was the 23-year-old Canadian Dr. Anne Innis Dagg and her research of giraffes. Despite being the first woman to set off on a solitary expedition to observe animal behavior, the zoologist never received proper popular praise for her efforts. With her bighearted documentary “The Woman Who Loves Giraffes,” director Alison Reid aims to correct this error, honoring an ahead-of-her-time scientist who defied the patriarchal conventions of the 1950s and stood up to various forms of sexism since then.
Blending stunning original 16mm footage captured during the researcher’s year in South Africa; lively talking heads interviews with various familial, academic, and conservationist figures; and loving letters exchanged between young Innis (read...

In this series our contributors sound off on their favorite fringe contenders. Here's Jose Solis on "Stories We Tell" It's winning Best Documentary critics prizes but let's talk another category.
Sarah Polley’s brilliant Stories We Tell isn’t as much a “documentary” as it is a psychological thriller. As the film begins she teases you suggesting this will be a simple case of “let’s find the truth about my mother” kind of film, only to then pull the rug from under your feet and reveal that she’s not exactly interested in delivering a beautiful conclusion tied up with a pretty ribbon. Delivering more twists and turns than any other film this year, Stories We Tell owes much of its success to its byzantine editing (by Mike Munn), which takes us on what feels like an emotional roller coaster ride.

We have all come to love Sarah Polley as an actress in films such as The Sweet Hereafter, Exotica and Zack Snyder’s remake of Dawn of the Dead, but in the past few years she has proven to be as big a talent behind the camera as she is in front of it. While many actors can have an awkward time going from acting in a movie to directing one, Polley made one of the most confident and assured feature-length directorial debuts with Away From Her, which earned its star Julie Christie an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. Polley then went on to direct last year’s Take This Waltz which starred Michelle Williams and Seth Rogen as a married couple that wonders if they’re truly satisfied with the state of their relationship.
