Smriti Mundhra, the creator of “Indian Matchmaking,” has launched a show called “The Romantics” on Netflix just in time for Valentine’s Day. The docuseries centers on a bastion of Hindi cinema, Yash Raj Films, which just released the smash hit “Pathaan.” Netflix releases the series day and date in India, the U.S. and around the world. And it is coming just as interest in films from the subcontinent are piquing international interest.
“It was sort of on my bucket list to make something about Indian cinema, broadly,” she tells Variety. “The intention was to look at the formative, most iconic films in Indian cinema, or the filmmakers — something that gives a glimpse into our industry.”
To Mundhra, there was a gap in world knowledge of the films coming out of Mumbai, even though many people thought they knew “Bollywood.”

One of the earliest films featuring the name Scott Jeffrey, that we reviewed here on Nerdly, was Darker Shades of Elise, a film Jeffrey produced back in 2017 and a film that didn’t really reflect where the rest of the actor turned director/producer’s oeuvre would head. But now Proportion Productions are back, only this time not with a low-budget monster movie, terrifying slasher film or brilliant metaphorical horror. No, with Graphic Desires the company bring us back to another time, the 90s post-Basic Instinct, with another erotic thriller.

The latest film from Proportion Productions, Dirty Games, aka Game of Love, is the latest erotic thriller from the company following the likes of Graphic Designs, Cam Girls and one of their earliest films, Darker Shades of Elise. And like the aforementioned Cam Girls, Dirty Games seems to be a part of a new wave of erotic movies released by UK distributor Left Films – who also recently released director Louisa Warren’s Dirty Work, a film I mentioned not just because of the similar title, but because of Warren’s association with Proportion Productions’s Scott Jeffrey… who also produced this erotic affair.

OpinionDespite managing to entertain while making important points, ‘Darlings’ has its share of flaws. The biggest of which is placing the responsibility of walking out of a violent situation on the individual when the issue is systemic.Sowmya RajendranScreengrab: Netflix. The recently released Hindi Netflix film Darlings is about a domestic violence survivor who decides to get rid of her husband. I’m not going to lie, I’m really starting to enjoy the trashy nature of these horror/thriller themed Lifetime movies. I think it’s the unapologetic nature of their films, they remind me very much of my video renting heyday, when the sexploitation films of filmmakers like Jag Mundhra were popular and Single White Female inspired a gluttony of similar ‘vicious vixens’ revenge-style films. It also seems, at least to me, that Lifetime has taken the reigns from the likes of Syfy, who years ago produced cheap but fun movies that riffed on bigger budget movies and, ultimately, made their films almost a genre of their own. Lifetime is doing the same with their films – taking their traditional over the top dramas but scaling them back a little,...

Principal photography has commenced on Netflix original drama-comedy film “Kathal” (Jackfruit) from Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms and Guneet Monga’s Sikhya Entertainment.
The woman-led film starring Sanya Malhotra and Anant Joshi (“Cobalt Blue”) is set in a small town and revolves around a local politician whose prized jackfruits go missing and a young police officer who is adamant to solve this bizarre case to prove herself. “Kathal” marks the directorial debut of Yashowardhan Mishra, who previously directed several shorts and Amazon Prime Video comedy special “Pata Nahi Par Bolna Hai.”
Mishra co-wrote the script with revered writer Ashok Mishra, who won India’s National Film Award for best screenplay for Shyam Benegal’s “Samar,” and whose credits also include Benegal’s “Bharat Ek Khoj,” “Welcome to Sajjanpur” and “Well Done Abba!,” Saeed Akhtar Mirza’s “Naseem” and Jagmohan Mundhra’s “Bawandar.”

In what I thought would be my final feature for the Class of 88 series, I sang the praises of Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers as the kind of trashy goodness that’s quite separate from movies we watch just so that we can rag on them for being so terrible. As luck would have it, earlier this month I stumbled on a movie very much on the opposite side of the equation, Jag Mundhra’s schlockfest Hack-o-Lantern. I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to at least briefly talk about one of the most entertainingly terrible movies I’ve seen in recent memory.
To provide some context, I’d never even heard of Hack-o-Lantern until I saw it being advertised at the Mahoning Drive-In, a bastion of genre cinema nestled in the Pocono Mountains of Northeastern Pennsylvania. Hack-o-Lantern was the first billed movie for their second annual Drive-In VHS-Fest,...

January’s genre-related home entertainment releases are ending on a somewhat quiet note, as there are only seven titles making their arrival this week. That being said, this cinematic septet of Blu-rays and DVDs make for a truly fantastic assortment of films, including the Vestron Video Collector’s Series editions of both Class of 1999 and Gothic, as well as stunning special editions for both Re-Animator and the original The Hills Have Eyes.
Other notable movies heading home on January 30th are Hack-o-Lantern, Lucifer’s Women, and Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween.

In the fall a young man’s fancy turns to thoughts of Horror. The air is crisp. Days become shorter. And nights get longer. And it all culminates in one night, Halloween. But there seems to be a real lack of Horror films that take place on the infamous night.
Halloween is Tommy’s favorite holiday. His Grandpa’s favorite too. Tommy loves dressing up and trick or treating. And Gramps loves seances and sacrificing people to Satan. One year Grandpa gives Tommy a pumpkin, a small skeleton and a necklace. His mom, upon learning the pumpkin is from her father, smashes it. Tommy hides the other gifts. Distraught over the gaining influence Tommy’s dad interrupts a ritual and ends up killed by Gramps’ coven! Twenty years later Grandpa is ready for Tommy to take over the cult. But not if Tommy’s mother and siblings have anything to say about it.

Let us play the “Name Game”, shall we? Since we all are part of the experience here at the entertainment website known as Sound on Sight maybe we should pay homage to our online destination by celebrating it in an unconventional manner? Specifically, we can recognize Sound on Sight by acknowledging movie names that contain the words “sound” and “sight” in their titles.
However you may perceive this experimentation as being rather gimmicky and silly please realize that this movie column is also a means to recognize a few movie titles that are unfamiliar or perhaps a first-time discovery to some of you out there that never heard some of these cinematic selections. There may be a couple of well-known films in the bunch but collectively the features being mentioned in Sound on Sight: Top 10 Random “Sound” and “Sight” Movie Titles are aptly presented based on the theme at hand.

Abhishek Bachchan is the likeliest candidate for the part of the man who carried India, kicking and dragging, into the 21st century. The Rajiv Gandhi bio-pic to be directed by Bhavna Talwar would now be made with the consent and approval of Mrs. Sonia Gandhi. While the film's director and her husband producer Sheetal Talwar have zeroed in on a number of British and Indian actors who would possibly play Rajiv (among them Colin Firth, Riz Ahmed and Abhishek Bachchan) it is the casting of an actress to play Sonia Gandhi that's proving more problematic, and a problem that needs to be sorted out at the earliest, since the Talwars would be meeting Mrs. Gandhi next month in Delhi over the Rajiv Gandhi bio-pic to give her a low-down of the content. Says a source close to the project, "Bhavna Talwar would be making the film in complete harmony with Mrs.

While many in Bollywood have rubbished the recent decision of the Maharshtra government to raise the eligibility age for drinking alcohol from 21 to 25, some do endorse the state government decision. Veteran star Hema Malini, also an active Bharatiya Janata Party politician, supports the government's decision. 'I think it's a very good decision,' she says. Director Anant Mahadevan is all for the ban. 'I support the move because cigarettes and alcohol are the most abused substances. I say why not ban cigarettes too for under 25?' Seconding Hema Malini and Mahadevan is actor-activist Shabana Azmi who thinks this decision is significant because of the increase in alcohol abuse. 'It has not been done ad-hoc. Govinda in Naughty@40
Govinda’s film Naughty@40 that will be released this week has been tagged with an ‘A’ certificate by the censor board and Govinda is unable to understand why
48-year-old Govinda, who is starring in the upcoming movie Naughty@40, does not seem to agree with the censor board’s decision to give his film an A certificate. Govinda seems to bank his decisions with eminent film critic Taran Adarsh who reportedly thought that it was unnecessary for the film to carry the ‘A’ tag. Govinda said, “Though I totally respect the Board?s perspective, but there are no hardcore bed room scenes in the films. There are far too many films with nudity which go by as uncensored.” He also said, “A certificate doesn?t matter. Those who will watch it first and like it will definitely spread the word and I am so sure that college-goers will come to see it.

Although the experience was bitter but I learnt lessons. Being a politician is a more difficult task," Govinda told Pti in an interview."Nothing is easy but politics is too difficult. Since I had come from the world of cinema and not politics I did not know much about it (politics) and by the time I learnt it I felt I didn`t belong to that world. So I decided not to remain there," Govinda said. The actor had represented Congress from the Mumbai North constituency from 2004-2009. He had defeated senior Bjp leader and former Petroleum Minister Ram Naik to win the seat. However, he opted out of the 2009 General Elections to revive his sagging acting career. As an MP,...
