Earlier this month, The Bricklayer, the latest action film from Cliffhanger and The Long Kiss Goodnight director Renny Harlin, was given a theatrical, On Demand, and Digital release. We’ve previously shared interviews with the film’s stars Aaron Eckhart and Nina Dobrev, and now JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray has sat down for an interview with Harlin himself! The primary focus of this interview is The Bricklayer, of course, but it also branches out with mentions of other Harlin projects like The Long Kiss Goodnight and Deep Blue Sea. You can check it out in the embed above.
Bumbray really enjoyed The Bricklayer, giving the film a 7/10 review you can read at This Link. If you’d like to watch the movie, you can do so on Amazon.

Author James Patterson has been writing about his infamous detective, Alex Cross, for several years now. So far, there have been 17 books and three film adaptations. Now I’ve never read a single one of his popular novels, but I have seen the films. Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider were interesting mysteries, and while they may not have been particularly great films, at the very least they had the great Morgan Freeman as the brooding, contemplative detective. Now we come to the third adaptation, simply titled Alex Cross, which no longer features Freeman. If it was Freeman who opted not to come back, it seems he knew exactly when to jump ship. However, if it was the filmmakers who decided to replace him, then they couldn’t have made a bigger mistake.
As the film opens, we find Alex Cross (Tyler Perry) going about his normal job.

I don't go see every movie. I do my best to see as many as I can, but there are some I just don't feel I need to see in order to do my job. Those I tend to skip are films I'm quite certain I will not enjoy because what need is there, really, for me to head into a movie in a foul mood, with little enthusiasm to review a movie? Especially if said movie is the reason my mood is so foul. That said, sometimes the job takes you places you would prefer not to go and sometimes those movies you don't expect to be very good are movies you need to go see. Such films found their way onto this list. Some of the other entries are simply films I wanted to be good, films that piqued my curiosity or just thought would be fun. They weren't.

Tyler Perry (For Colored Girls) steps away from Medea and gets more serious in the thriller movie Alex Cross.
Based on James Patterson‘s novel Cross, the film follows the Detroit Police Department homicide detective/psychologist (Perry) as he takes on one of his toughest cases. Cross plays a cat and mouse game with a serial killer called Picasso (Matthew Fox, TV’s Lost). After Picasso makes the mission personal, Cross is pushed to the edge of his moral and psychological limits.
The character of Cross is, of course, the same one who was played by Morgan Freeman (Seven) in Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider.
Rated PG-13, Alex Cross also stars Giancarlo Esposito (TV’s Breaking Bad), Rachel Nichols (Conan the Barbarian), Jean Reno (Armored), Ed Burns (Edward Burns) and John C. McGinley (Platoon). The...

You’d think a thriller about a brilliantly dogged detective matching wits with a sadistically smart serial killer would be at least somewhat entertaining. You’d be right in thinking that too, and if that’s the kind of film you’re looking for I recommend Memories of Murder, Copycat or Seven to fill your needs. Because there’s nothing about the new film Alex Cross that comes even close to brilliant, smart or intentionally entertaining. Alex Cross (Tyler Perry) is a homicide detective and doctor (of some kind but probably a psychologist) in Detroit who’s grown weary of his police beat and is considering taking an adviser role with the FBI. Before he can convince his pregnant wife that the move to Washington DC is in their best interest he’s tasked with solving a multiple murder with a tortured woman at its center. Cross’ team includes his childhood friend, Det...

Tyler Perry, best known for his performances as the sassy female character Madea, makes a dramatic shift playing detective and criminal psychologist Alex Cross in veteran director Rob Cohen’s big-screen fumble of the James Patterson novel "Cross," one of many crime novels in the popular author’s "Alex Cross" series. In a loose and surprisingly awful adaptation of Patterson’s 12th "Alex Cross" novel by writers Marc Moss and Kerry Williamson, Cross chases a sadistic killer-for-hire (Matthew Fox) through the streets of Detroit on what may be his last case before taking a job with the F.B.I. and relocating to Washington D.C. (the locale of Patterson’s books). Perry is something of a casting letdown once one learns that Idris Elba, star of the tense BBC America crime drama Luther, was originally slated to replace original franchise star Morgan Freeman from the 1997 film Kiss the Girls...

After about 10 minutes of Alex Cross you realize you've just watched ten minutes that could have been cut from the film. We're introduced to the title character, detective (and doctor) Alex Cross (Tyler Perry) and his team -- Tommy (Ed Burns) and Monica (Rachel Nichols) -- in a routine foot chase as a means of getting to know the generic group dynamic. This is followed by an introduction to the film's villain (Matthew Fox) whose been hired to carry out a series of high-profile killings, the first of which he carries out by worming his way into an underground boxing match as a means of capturing the attention of a young female we'll soon come to know as his first victim. It's at this point Alex Cross could have actually kicked in. To do so would have introduced us to the film's killer, knowing nothing about him other than the...

Alex Cross hasn't opened yet, a follow-up is already in talks. According to Deadline, a sequel to the upcoming Tyler Perry starrer Alex Cross called Double Cross, based on James Patterson's novel, is close to becoming a reality as a deal's coming together. Marc Moss and Kerry Williamson adapted Alex Cross, and whether the scribes will be back for Double Cross, remains to be seen. In the Double Cross novel, Alex's life is calming dawn when he's drawn back into the game to take on a new criminal mastermind. The murders in Washington, D.C. are unlike any that Cross and Detective Briana Stone have ever seen as the Audience Killer sets the stage for his killings for public view. The whole city's on the edge of what will happen next, with the killer hosting a live feed of his website. In the meantime in Colorado, the imprisoned Kyle Craig...

Exclusive: I’ve learned that the deal coming together will turn bestselling author James Patterson’s crime novel Double Cross into a 2nd movie starring Tyler Perry as the famous Washington DC crimefighter/psychologist. Perry’s first turn as Alex Cross opens this Friday from Qed. Summit Entertainment is distributing in the U.S. It’s Perry’s first lead role that he didn’t produce or direct or write – and his reviews so far have been rather good. Certainly a lot better than I expected from the star of the crossdressing Madea movies. Although the critics have been harsh on helmer Rob Cohen and the film as a whole. Qed International’s Bill Block put together Alex Cross at a cost of only $25M (lowered to $23M with Louisiana tax subsidies). He chased down the book rights from Patterson for under $1 million, then hired Marc Moss and Kerry Williamson...

-- James Patterson titled his 12th Alex Cross crime novel simply "Cross." The filmmakers who adapted it expanded the title to "Alex Cross."
They might as well have gone for broke and called it "Tyler Perry's Madea's Stab at Expanding Her-His Hollywood Marketability as James Patterson's Alex Cross."
Perry's name will draw his fans in. Patterson's name will draw his fans in. There's no trace of Madea in director Rob Cohen's adaptation, yet the spirit of the sassy grandma inevitably hangs over the project for viewers curious to see Perry playing it straight and dramatic.
Alex Cross the man and "Alex Cross" the movie wind up suffering for it. It's perfectly reasonable for Perry to try to broaden his enormous popularity beyond the Madea lineage in his own raucous portraits of family life. It's also perfectly reasonable to say that casting Perry as Cross was a bad idea,...

The first trailer and poster for the upcoming crime/thriller Alex Cross landed back in June, and gave us a brilliant look at the film and what we can expect from it. In short, we should be seeing a great new side of Tyler Perry, and an immense new side to Matthew Fox as the antagonist, who looks more hench/intense than almost anyone ever.
The film will be opening first in Russia, ahead of its UK and Us releases, and now a new poster promoting that Russian release has made its way online – you’d be forgiven for thinking it was a poster for Safe House, because this new poster looks almost identical to some we saw for the Denzel Washington- / Ryan Reynolds-starrer earlier in the year.

Starring Tyler Perry as the eponymous Alex Cross, a role previously played by Morgan Freeman, this new adaptation of James Patterson’s series of books is looking pretty awesome.
We got eight first-look images from the film last month, showing off a Matthew Fox absolutely ripped to the teeth, and now the first poster has debuted over at Moviefone.
The tagline is a little cheesy – ‘Don’t Ever Cross Alex Cross’ – but the Perry/Fox combination with the city backdrop looks pretty awesome.

Casting! Here's info one one potentially great project, one that will probably find an appreciative audience, and one that will perhaps just make you hungry. McGinley will realize his destiny by playing police chief to Tyler Perry in I, Alex Cross, and Tyler Posey will go to war with rival taco vendors in Taco Shop. I'm very excited for Stoker, which is about to shoot in Nashville and will be the English-language debut of Oldboy and Thirst director Park Chan-wook. The film is a Hitchcockian-sounding thriller written by Wentworth Miller, about a young woman who has to deal with the incursion of her mysterious uncle into the family after the death of her father. One of my favorite character actors is joining the interesting reboot of the James Patterson crime franchise based on Alex Cross. In the movie titled – I, Alex Cross, Tyler Perry is playing Cross, while Reno is set to play an unknown character right now. The rest of the cast consists of Ed Burns and Matthew Fox, who has already been cast to play an insane serial killer in the movie. The film is being directed by Rob Cohen (The Skulls, Fast and the Furious) from a script written by Kerry Williamson and Marc Moss.
You can’t run. Detective Alex Cross is pulled out of a family celebration and given the awful news that a beloved relative has been found brutally murdered. Alex vows to hunt down the killer, and soon learns that she was mixed up in one of Washington’s wildest scenes. And she was not this killer’s only victim.

Author James Patterson releases a new novel almost every other week. At least, that's what it feels like. Murder mystery after murder mystery get turned out and devoured by legions of fans. It's been a busy week for casting news, with several projects adding, announcing, or subtracting cast members.
In January, it was announced that Judd Apatow's next writing and directing project would be a spin-off of his successful, 2007 romantic comedy Knocked Up. The movie will focus on the married characters portrayed by Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann, instead of than Katherine Heigl and Seth Rogen, in a story that has been kept under wraps so far.
Looks like Rudd and Mann will be getting some company, with THR reporting that Megan Fox is negotiating to join the comedy. What role Fox will play is also being kept secret.
It's no secret who Albert Brooks is playing, with Deadline reporting that the comedian is joining the cast as Rudd's dad.

Spending a few years washed up on an island where time plays tricks and people are always trying to kill you/fool you/convince them to join their crusade would have an effect on anyone, and it looks like Lost’s Matthew Fox is no exception. He’s turned into a killer! All right, so it’s just for a film, and he’s signed to play an assassin in I, Alex Cross. Writer/director/actor Tyler Perry is already aboard playing the new version of novelist James Patterson’s character, which has previously been on screen in the shape of Morgan Freeman.Rob Coen is directing the film, which finds Perry’s Cross and his partner Tommy Kane (Ed Burns) tangling with the evil Michael Sullivan (Fox). Tyler Perry will be the next actor to play in I, Alex Cross a well-liked fictional character crafted by writer James Patterson and made famous by Morgan Freeman in two movies.
The character, created in James Patterson’s crime novels, has been celebrated on the big screen by Morgan Freeman, who performed the role in Kiss the Girls (1997) and Along Came a Spider (2001) based on Patterson’s first novel in 1993. In this novel which was first published last year, a member of Alex’s family is killed and the case throws Alex into a very dangerous world of power and evil which results a shocking revelation.
Perry works as a writer and director, and even more a producer best known for films focusing on his offensive senior citizen character, Madea. In 2005 Perry released a film called Diary of a Mad Black Woman and, most recently For Colored Girls. This will...

Last August, when news broke that The Wire’s Idris Elba was to follow in the footsteps of Morgan Freeman (Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider) and reboot the James Patterson detective character Alex Cross on the big screen, we were psyched — and this was before we’d seen his Golden Globe-nominated turn as a detective in the miniseries Luther. EW chatted with Elba last October about the film, which was to then have been directed by David Twohy (A Perfect Getaway, Pitch Black), and all he would reveal was that the script was “phenomenal” and if he...

As an actor, Tyler Perry is known as the lovably irritating Madea in all those Madea-centric films. Now, the Hollywood Reporter is saying that the actor will play Alex Cross, the James Patterson-created character that Morgan Freeman previously played in "Kiss the Girls" and "Along Came a Spider." (Check out my fun interview with Perry for "Madea Goes to Jail" right here)
It's an ambitious gambit for Perry, and way to go for trying to defy gravity by deciding to play the detective-psychologist. And it's not even a comedy!
Qed has announced that Patterson is co-writing a draft of the script with Kerry Williamson, and will be polished by Marc Moss. Rob Cohen ("The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor") will direct. (Check out my interview with Cohen for "The Mummy" right here)

Tyler Perry is to portray detective Alex Cross in a new movie. The 41-year-old star will play the popular James Patterson fictional character - the first major role he has taken that doesn't involve one of his own projects - in a Rob Cohen-directed film, which will be the third big screen outing for the psychologist-investigator. Morgan Freeman previously portrayed Alex - the subject of 17 novels since 1993 - in two films, while 'The Wire' actor Idris Elba was attached in a David Twohy-directed independent movie, though that project appears to have been shelved. Writer James has penned the script with Kerry Williamson, while Marc Moss is polishing the draft. The film - which is provisionally titled 'I, Alex Cross' - doesn't have distribution yet, but world rights to the project will be sold in a few weeks at the European Film Market in Berlin. Rob last...
