The producers at New Line Cinema had the opening fatality of Final Destination 3 in their back pocket well before the movie’s 2006 premiere. In fact, talks of a deadly theme park ride made the rounds before creative partners James Wong and Glen Morgan returned to write the script. After the disappointing return on 2003’s Willard, New Line wanted something thrilling for its next horror project. A “roller coaster” movie, as New Line founder Robert Shaye put it. Like-minded Richard Brener is also owed some credit; the executive producer apparently was on the same wavelength after brainstorming ideas — initially anything big and transportational, such as boats and trains — for the intended conclusion of this franchise. However, the overwhelming box-office numbers steered the original plan off course and Death lived on to kill another day.

It’s all about the color red for the 7th day of Creepmas; blood red, to be precise. Bloody Disgusting’s 12 Days of Creepmas continues the holiday horror revelry, this time with holiday slashers that aim to paint the snow red with arterial spray and carnage. These holiday slashers demonstrate that there’s more to the realm of holiday slashers than killer Santas with a variety of Yuletide killers, from lonely security guards to mutated murderous snowmen. Save for one feel-good slasher to kick things off, today’s Creepmas offerings mainly capture the grimmer side of the holidays.
The 12 Days of Creepmas continues on Bloody Disgusting, this time with 7 holiday set slashers to paint the snow blood red.
Keep track of the 12 Days of Creepmas here.

The weather has turned, all of your local stores will now be well stocked up with Christmas tat, and parents will be frantically searching for new and inventive naughty shenanigans for that fucking elf to get up to, and for kids to jump out of bed and probably forget they had a ‘magic’ elf that’s probably riding around on the pet cat. That’s right gore-hounds, Christmas is upon us, so you know what that means? Christmas carnage! Yes, there’s nothing we like more here in the haunted JoBlo dungeons than revisiting some classic festive bloodshed. Of course, this time of year always brings us repeats of the usual Christmas staples like It’s A Wonderful Life,...

Horror has come into its own in the 21st century. This is not to say that the genre has ever not been one of the most interesting and creative in the long history of cinema. Since nearly the beginning of the art form, using moving images to scare audiences has been a gateway for aspirin filmmakers to break into the industry—or for even veterans to creatively something about the greater world by painting a landscape of anxiety.
Nonetheless, the 21st century (particularly beginning in its second decade) has brought a renewed appreciation for scary movies’ abilities to speak to audiences with more than just “boo.” With that in mind, we at Den of Geek have polled our staff and collected the below list of what we generally consider to be the best chillers of the fast quarter-century or so. Enjoy.

The 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat, one of my all-time favorite movies, is getting a Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release (and possibly a new DVD release) from Synapse Films. We’re still waiting to hear a release date for that, as obviously the company wasn’t able to meet the hoped-for October release window – but while we wait for the special physical media release, Trick or Treat is set to making its streaming debut on the Screambox service this Friday, October 27th! Just in time for Halloween viewing!

When “The X-Files” premiered on Sept. 3, 1993 on Fox, viewers had no idea how incredibly bizarre the cases tackled by FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) would be.
Anything that was deemed paranormal, supernatural or unexplainable was called an “X-File” — the cases that no one else in the agency wanted to touch.
In the show’s 11 seasons, they dealt with more than just aliens and shadowy government conspiracies. Their cases involved demons, ghosts, serial killers, sea monsters and even vampires. In celebration of the series’ 30th anniversary, here are the episodes with the scariest villains and killer creatures.

The writers and actors strikes continued Friday with no sign of a speedy resolution, after a week of public back-and-forth did not appear to move the sides closer to an agreement.
A handful of leaders from the Writers Guild of America met with four top CEOs on Tuesday night, leading to a barrage of statements but no further in-the-room negotiations. Meanwhile, there has been no overture to SAG-AFTRA, which has been on strike since July 14.
“I just feel we’re digging our heels in harder,” said Lang Parker, a SAG-AFTRA member, who was picketing at Fox.
On the writers’ side, there was widespread sentiment that the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers had failed in its bid to divide the union by releasing details of its latest offer. The WGA responded on Thursday that the studios’ proposal does not go far enough in protecting writers from existential threats.
“The writers are solid.

From their windowless sub-basement office, FBI Agents Fox “Spooky” Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) began their assignment on The X-Files chasing little green men, or rather gray, as Mulder points out during the third episode, “Squeeze.” The “Pilot” episode was about alien experimentation. “Deep Throat” was about pilots who fly experimental craft, possibly designed using extraterrestrial technology. Season 1 episode 3 was more down to earth, while still out of this world.
According to both his DNA report and FBI profile, animal control officer Eugene Victor Tooms (Doug Hutchison) would be due to wake up some time in 2023, if only he’d have stepped off that mini-mall escalator. It’s time for another episode of the Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series, and with this one we’re looking back at a film that was released in 2000 and kicked off a franchise with four sequels and counting. The film in question is Final Destination (watch it Here), and you can find out all about it by watching the video embedded above.
Directed by James Wong, who crafted the screenplay with Glen Morgan and Jeffrey Reddick, Final Destination has the following synopsis: Alex Browning is embarking on a trip to Paris when he experiences a premonition — he sees the plane explode moments after leaving the ground. Alex insists that everyone get off the plane and 7 people including Alex are forced to disembark. All watch as the plane actually explodes in a fireball. Last week, we heard the awesome news that the 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat, one of my all-time favorite movies, is getting a Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release (and possibly a new DVD release) from Synapse Films. The 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat is one of my all-time favorites, but since the VHS era it has only gotten a barebones DVD release (which is available for a high price Here) and a Blu-ray in Germany. So this ranks high as some of the coolest news I’ve seen lately: Synapse Films is putting together a Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release (and possibly a new DVD release) of Trick or Treat that they’re hoping to send out into the world by the end of 2023!
Full details on the release aren’t available at this time, as they’re too early in the process, but Synapse Films is collaborating with Michael Felsher of Red Shirt Pictures to make sure it’s the best it can be. The livestream announcement can be viewed on Facebook.

In its most infamous monster-of-the-week episode, "Home," Fox's "The X-Files" took the idea of small-town American isolationism to the furthest extreme network TV would allow. First broadcast in October 1996 — two months before the TV Parental Guidelines system went into effect — "Home" juxtaposes Norman Rockwell images with hidden horrors that could be triggering even now for some viewers. In the span of one hour, the episode toggles between blue skies, baseball, a cornfield and Cadillac, '50s pop, references to "The Andy Griffith Show," and much uglier subject matter like infanticide, birth defects, home invasion, violence against Black people, and an incestuous mutant family.
To say it delved into taboos would be an understatement. This wouldn't be your average rerun: Fox withheld airing "Home" again for a full three years until October 1999, by which time the episode would be carrying the show's first and last TV-ma rating. "Only on Halloween ... would...

Black Christmas is an inherently feminist franchise. Released in 1974, Bob Clark’s original film follows a group of sorority sisters who are stalked and dispatched by a mysterious killer over the holiday break between semesters. During a busy Christmas party in the full sorority house, the girls receive a call from someone they refer to as the Moaner. They gather around the receiver and listen to a tirade of obscene gibberish that culminates in the deadpan threat, “I’m going to kill you.” True to his promise, the caller who will come to be known as Billy (Albert J. Dunk in an uncredited role) murders the sisters one by one while calling to harrass them from a phone line in their own attic. Clark’s film is a masterclass in atmospheric dread, perfectly blending the trimings of the holiday season with the terror of an unknown killer hiding in the shadows.

When the weather gets cold, the wind nips at your nose, and it’s starting to feel festive, you know it’s Christmas time. But not only do the usual slew of films come out, but that means for us horror heads, it’s time to watch some holiday carnage! And, while Christmas is over and done with for the year, holiday horror movies are good for a festive watch any time of the year! The original Black Christmas is a horror holiday season staple, but what about the remakes?
2006’s Black Christmas loosely continued the demented story of the psychopath killer, Billy, slaying a bunch of sorority girls. 2019’s Black Christmas eschewed this slasher storyline, and instead, went in a different direction with a supernatural patriarchal cult. Both have their own twisted version of holiday cheer, but which one should be thrown out with the fruitcake? Let’s grab...

The producers of 2003’s Willard chose to nix “remake” from the film’s marketing vocabulary, but 2003’s Willard adaptation is irrefutably a remake of 1971’s furry social outcast chiller. At the forefront of 2000s remake trends, Glen Morgan‘s Willard features altered themes and a deeper thirst for suspense, going the “darker and grittier” route displayed by subsequent studio remakes (including Morgan’s 2006 Black Christmas slasher). Stephen Gilbert’s novel Ratman’s Notebooks inspires both pictures, although neither dare touch the subplot about “Ratman Robberies” — the narrator steals money from shopkeepers and neighbors before the whole workplace murder climax. Where’s my movie about a criminal aided by rat accomplices? Rat King in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will do, I guess.
It’s daffy to think that 2003’s Willard was hidden as a remake when you watch them back-to-back, but the general moviegoer wouldn’t know any different. That’s...

The "Final Destination" series, originally conceived by James Wong, Glen Morgan, and Jeffrey Reddick, ingeniously subverted slasher movie expectations. In a post-"Scream" horror landscape, the slasher subgenre was waning. The first "Final Destination," released in 2000, reimagined the slasher villain as not a masked maniac, but the specter of Death himself. Spurned after a group of attractive teens ostensibly cheat death, he tracks them down one by one, inciting grisly Rube Goldberg machinations to reclaim the souls that cheated him.
Those deaths ultimately defined the series, imbuing it with an all-too-real sense of slasher nihilism. Ordinary, everyday objects and circumstances were rendered deadly, and each subsequent entry...

When we think of a horror franchise, the first image that comes to mind is likely a slasher film. But the 2000s brought a horror franchise with an even more relentless villain than all of the heavy hitters like Freddy, Jason, Chucky, and Leatherface combined. Directed by James Wong and based on an original story idea from Jeffrey Reddick, "Final Destination" ushered in the horror scene of the new millennium by pitting teenagers against the greatest enemy imaginable -- death itself. Wong, Reddick, and Glen Morgan worked together to write a story about Alex Browning, Clear Rivers, Carter Horton, Valerie Lewton, and the rest of the...

Released at the precipice of the 21st century, the first "Final Destination" film is totally indicative of what the following decade of mainstream horror films would come to offer: Gory kills, edgy cynicism, and not to mention a weirdly prescient fear of fiery plane tragedies. Interestingly enough, the film that started the death-obsessed franchise was first conjured as a spec script for the beloved Fox series "The X-Files." Perhaps this is unsurprising, considering "Final Destination" co-writers Glen Morgan and James Wong (who also directed the film) penned several "X-Files" episodes — including "Home," one of the best (and most grisly) episodes the series ever aired.

Remember when awards shows were held in person and winners walked up to the stage to accept their trophies? Ahh, those were the days. One clip from the 1996 Screen Actors Guild ceremony (honoring work from 1995) is particularly fun to watch in retrospect as Gillian Anderson, current nominee for “The Crown,” is named the winner for “The X-Files.” The flummoxed actress takes her trophy, looks out at the hundreds of people in attendance and asks, “Where did you people come from?” Watch the SAG Awards flashback video above.

“I have absolutely nothing to say. I didn’t expect this at all,” Anderson declares as her fellow actors chuckle in the audience. She beat out Christine Lahti (“Chicago Hope”), Sharon Lawrence (“NYPD Blue”), Julianna Margulies (“ER”) and Sela Ward (“Sisters”) to claim her first trophy.

Update 2/25: Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw and Simon Kinberg’s Genre Films have issued a statement about the end of The Twilight Zone series.
We greatly enjoyed our time working on The Twilight Zone — particularly when the real world around us often felt more and more like another dimension. We cherished the opportunity to collaborate with so many talented writers, actors and crewmembers. We greatly enjoyed our time working on The Twilight Zone — particularly when the real world around us often felt more and more like another dimension. The Jordan Peele reboot of “The Twilight Zone” will not be returning following its two-season run.
“Jordan Peele, Simon Kinberg and the entire production team truly reimagined ‘The Twilight Zone’ for the modern age,” said Julie McNamara, Paramount Plus programming chief. “They upheld the classic series’ legacy of socially conscious storytelling and pushed today’s viewers to explore all new dimensions of thought-provoking and topical themes that we hope will resonate with audiences for years to come.”
This reboot of the anthology series created by Rod Serling featured Peele as host, producer and narrator, with episodes featuring Ike Barinholtz, John Cho, Taissa Farmiga, Ginnifer Goodwin, Kumail Nanjiani, Chris O’Dowd, Seth Rogen, Adam Scott, Jacob Tremblay, and Steven Yeun, among others.

The Twilight Zone Season 2 Episode 6
Science fiction that happens underwater almost always become horrifically scary, really fast. Off the top of my head, the only sci-fi premises that aren’t automatically horrifying are the ‘90s show seaQuest, or my three-year-old daughter’s favorite TV Show, Octonauts. Everything else that happens underwater has the potential to be packed with the stuff of nightmares. James Cameron’s The Abyss isn’t called The Lovely Abyss. Great underwater fiction comes with scary sea monsters, at least nine times out of ten.
The sixth episode of season 2 of the new Jordan Peele Twilight Zone is what would happen if the sea monster story was merged with the original Ridley Scott-directed Alien. In other words, you’re terrified, but also kind of rooting for the monster on some level. What makes this episode so interesting, is you think...

The Twilight Zone Season 2 approaches rapidly like an ominous signpost up ahead, pointing to your next stop, CBS All Access, and now we know when and what to expect.
CBS All Access has released the trailer for the second season of The Twilight Zone, revealing its heretofore secret premiere date of Thursday, June 25, on which all 10-episodes will be available to stream; a strategy the diverges from Season 1 last year, which rolled out episode on a weekly basis. Check it out just below!
The trailer—a morose montage of mind-bending minutia set to the musical accompaniment of a haunting cover of Santo & Johnny’s 1959 classic, “Sleep Walk”—is appropriately rife with Rem-resembling insanity. While short on plot specifics, since the clip covers the entire season, we are introduced to the lineup of guest stars for this season’s anthology entries, with names like Billy Porter, Morena Baccarin, Jimmi Simpson, Jenna Elfman,...

I came of age (whatever that means) in the ’80s, so I’m always very interested in what Severin Films re-releases from that era; some I’ve seen and some I haven’t, and others I’ve never even heard of before. The two new releases from Severin I’ll be looking at today fit in that middle category—ones I know of very well, but yet remained unseen. Until now, that is; Severin has seen fit to load up the fantasy/actioner/softcore Gwendoline (1984) and the harrowingly violent The Boys Next Door (1985) with everything a viewer could want to know.
Gwendoline (1984): Otherwise known as The Perils of Gwendoline in the Land of the Yik Yak, this film is goofy, immature, leering, and has stunning set design. Yes, it’s French; how’d you guess? There’s nothing tidy about the conclusion of Bob Clark’s 1974 horror classic “Black Christmas,” hailed as one of the first slasher films and the inspiration for some of the horror sub-genre’s most indelible works. After doling out thrills and chills and vicious kills to a group of sorority sisters over the course of a tidy 98 minutes, Clark’s film doesn’t end with a grand reveal of the crazed killer, no catharsis for its final girl, and little in the way of explanation as to why the hell a group of innocent coeds have forever had their holiday happiness shattered. These days, it’s the kind of open ending that would signal sequel hopes for a burgeoning franchise, but back in the ’70s, it was just a wild way to end a terrifying feature. What’s scarier than not knowing?

When Sophia Takal’s Black Christmas remake announced a shift from “R” to “PG-13,” the internet – as per brand – flew into an overreactive tirade equating horror quality to “R” designations. My response? Ratings do not maketh the movies. Any film, MPAA ruling aside, depends on its cinematic makeup to deliver a worthwhile theatergoing (or home watching) experience. Black Christmas isn’t one of the year’s most disappointing horror films because it’s “PG-13” rated. It’s because quickie edits around mature “R” content are noticeable, or unbalanced Adr doubles decibel levels, or characters are helplessly underwritten and uncharismatically presented.
Horror movies aren’t “bad” *because* they’re approved below “R.” Horror movies, as with Black Christmas, are “bad” because, well, they’re just poorly constructed and bafflingly ineffective.
In Takal’s iteration, co-written by April Wolfe, sorority sisters find themselves prey for hooded killers on the eve of winter vacation.
