In an exclusive one-on-one interview with Variety, Fernando Medin, president and managing director of Warner Bros. Discovery (Wbd) Latin America and U.S. Hispanic, drilled down on the company’s programming and growth strategy for the region where it launches its rebranded streaming platform, Max, on Feb. 27. This will be Wbd’s first major international roll-out of Max after the U.S.

“News of a Kidnapping,” created by Andrés Wood and Rodrigo García, has picked up more recognition at the Rose d’Or Latinos. The dramatic series, which won a Platino Award last April for best dramatic series, added to its collection of prizes at the inaugural event held at Content Americas in Miami on Jan. 23.
The Latin American extension of Europe’s Rose d’Or Awards, led by jury chairman, Mas Ros Media CEO Marcos Santana, doled out prizes across television, feature films, unscripted content and podcasts.
Prime Video took home the most statuettes at the event, an encouraging sign of its growing cachet with talent across the region. “Dive” and “La Jauría” helmer Lucía Puenzo is set to direct gangster epic “The Gunwoman (Pepita’s Legend),” toplining and executive produced by Argentine star Luisana Lopilato, and inspired by the real-life story of Margarita Di Tullio, queen of its Mar del Plata underworld who became the most famous woman in Argentina’s criminal history.
Currently in pre-production, the movie is backed by one of the grandest alliances ever assembled to produce an Argentine feature film, thriller “The Gunwoman” (Pepita’s Legend)” being produced by a consortium led by Argentina’s Zeppelin Studio, headed by Lucas Jinkis. Annecy, France — India’s Green Gold Animation has boarded 3D animated musical comedy “Escape to India,” it was announced at Annecy’s Mifa. The company will co-produce alongside Gastón Gorali of Argentina’s Mundoloco, who’s producing his first feature.
“When Gastón told me about the idea and showed me the character sketches, I immediately fell in love with the project. We felt emotionally connected with the storyline, and more importantly, we loved all the talent involved in ‘Underdogs’,” said Green Gold Animation CEO Rajiv Chilaka, referring to the 2013 animated feature directed by Mundoloco co-founder Juan José Campanella.
Based in Hyderabad, Green Gold Animation also has offices in L.A. and Singapore. Jennifer Lopez will produce Fox's English-language remake of Argentina's teen telenovela "Rebelde Way" ("The Rebels"). Duane Adler ("Save the Last Dance," "Step Up") will adapt the series for Lopez and Simon Fields' Nuyorican Prods. BUENOS AIRES -- Argentine production houses will be out in full force in Cannes at next week's big international confab, MIPCOM, having revved up their television exports into a booming business for the country. Companies such as Cris Morena Group, Pol-ka Producciones and Cuatro Cabezas will hit the Cote d'Azur with a slew of shows that have been hits at home and are now increasingly in demand around the world, from Eastern Europe to Southeast Asia. Argentina exports an estimated 40,000 hours of television annually, largely telenovelas and reality-based programming. "MIPCOM is like a private club. You have to be there if you want to be connected," said Mariano Kon of Cuatro Cabezas, one of Argentina's most successful production houses.
