Yes, there are an astonishing amount of Wizard of Oz remakes, adaptations, and sequels that currently seem to be on the way at the moment. Whether they'll all make it to the big screen remains to be seen, but that's not stopping others from adding to the pile.
Vanguard Films has a new re-imagining of the classic tale in development called Oz Wars that will use CGI and stop-motion animations. Unlike most of the other Oz projects in the works -- which seem to be staying generally close to the original story -- this one will be taking things to a seriously different level, being set in the contemporary world and bringing black magic, battle-ready warrior witches, monsters, and even martial arts to the table.
Vanguard has hired Mike Johnson to direct the movie, which is written by Rob Moreland. Johnson has previously co-directed Corpse Bride with Tim Burton, and directed episodes of The PJs.

Contemporary Story Will Feature Martial Arts, Black Magic & Warrior Witches Yeah, we know, the amount of "The Wizard Of Oz" projects in development is already well on this side of ridiculous but it appears that any idea is a good idea in Hollywood, so why not one more. "Corpse Bride" co-director Mike Johnson has been hired on to helm "Oz Wars." The stop-motion animated film will feature a contemporary setting, warrior witches, black magic, martial arts and monsters. Far out! But with a script by Rob Moreland ("Space Chimps," "Happily 'N Ever After") and Athena Gam we're not exactly…...

There are a few different Wizard of Oz inspired films currently in development right now in Hollywood including Sam Raimi's The Great And Powerful Oz for Disney. Josh Olson (A History of Violence) is developing a sequel to Oz, which focuses on Dorothy's granddaughter who returns to Oz to fight evil. The other film is simply called Oz, which is set up over at Warner's New Line, and is being produced by Twilight's Temple Hill. Then there is John Boorman who is developing a CGI version of the story based on the original novel by Franck L. Baum.
Now there's another Oz film being made called Oz Wars that will be created in a CGI/Stop Motion hybrid animated style. We've always maintained that The Wizard of Oz is rife with horror elements. In fact, as charming as it may be, it's also one of the creepiest films ever made. True, that's not exactly popular opinion, but the new feature Oz Wars may make you look at things a bit differently.
According to Variety Vanguard Films has tapped Mike Johnson, co-director of Corpse Bride, to helm its CG/stop-motion feature Oz Wars.
Oz Wars, written by Rob Moreland and Athena Gam, is a transformation of the Oz narrative with Dorothy caught up in a whirlwind of warrior witches, black magic, martial arts and monsters against a contemporary backdrop.
Oz Wars is an "animated action-adventure story, but unlike most animated films, it's not just for kids," Johnson said. "The Land of Oz will be reimagined using stop-motion to create a world that's dark, slick, sexy and dangerous."

It looks like John Stevenson will not be working with DreamWorks again for a long time, if at all. Today Stevenson announced the upcoming projects that he is working on with Vanguard Films.
John Stevenson has signed a producing/directing pact with Vanguard Films, and has begun work on directing Alien Rock Band for Vanguard. Rock Band is a mix of live-action and CGI that follows a garage band from Earth that journeys across the Universe for a chance to quality for the Intergalactic Battle of the Bands.
Vanguard Films has directed such duds as Valiant, Happily N’Ever After, Space Chimps and Space Chimps 2: Zartog Strikes Back. Hopefully bringing the likes of Stevenson on board to produce and direct will be a step into financial and critical success.
A new strategy has been put into place to prepare for the upcoming films according to a press release.

Carlos and I sat in on the Emo Boy panel, Steve Emond's tale of a really, really sensitive soul who develops some pretty strange super "Emo" powers as he makes his way through adolescence.
Emo Boy is coming to theaters, as an indie staring Jaime King and Lucas Cruikshank (of Freddie fame) and directed by Fanboy's Kyle Newman. Robert Moreland, King and Newman discussed the film during the panel.
I was interested because one of Emo's storylines is how he "goes gay" for a while, exploring that aspect of his sexuality along his path to self discovery. It's a fairly important subplot to the film and was therefore pleased when Newman said it was one of his favorite parts of the tale. Then I was let down when he said they were cutting the plot thread because it didn't seem to fit in the context of the movie.

John H. Williams and his Vanguard Films have picked up rights to the cult comic book series "Emo Boy," setting Kyle Newman to direct the adaptation. Stephen Edmond, the comic's writer-artist, is penning the screenplay.
Emo is a fashion and music style as well as emotional description of someone who is overly sensitive or angst-ridden. Published by Slave Labor Graphics, the satirical comic followed the travails of the most self-dramatizing young man in the history of the world, whose emotions were so intense he even had "emo powers."
Vanguard discovered the book at Comic-Con. Vanguard's Rob Moreland is overseeing.
The company hopes to make music a key component of the project, which has been described as being in the tone of "Napoleon Dynamite," "Harold and Maude" and "Zoolander."
Newman, repped by UTA and the Collective, is the helmer behind "Fanboys," the long-delayed comedy about "Star Wars" fans. The movie is due to open Feb.

Directed by Paul J. Bolger from a screenplay by Robert Moreland, the film is a satirical retelling of the classic Cinderella story and is set in Fairy Tale Land, where the age-old balance between good and evil has been thrown out of whack. Led by Cinderella's (aka Ella) power-mad stepmother, an unholy alliance of bad guys takes on the good guys. When Ella sees her own fairy tale take a radical turn, she sheds her damsel-in-distress trappings to lead the resistance.
