Exclusive: It was revealed tonight during Deadline’s Emmy season virtual screening of Comedy Central’s Drunk History that the Derek Waters-Jeremy Konner series will not be moving forward with a seventh season, originally ordered last summer.
The series’ sixth — and now final — season, which wrapped its run on Aug. 6, 2019, is up for three Emmy nominations, Outstanding Variety Sketch series, as well as Outstanding Costumes and Production Design for a Reality/Variety/Competition series. Drunk History, which is getting a strong push by ViacomCBS in its farewell awards season, has been nominated in the top variety sketch category every year since the category was launched in 2015.
Drunk History will continue to air around the world in various local formats. Waters, who delivered the news that the series has ended on Comedy Central, has a first-look deal with the network and will segue to working on new projects.

While Comedy Central’s Drunk History typically groups its tales by thematic episodes, creators Derek Waters and Jeremy Konner’s approach to building a season simply comes from mining the best unknown stories.
In regard to the direction they provide to their research department, Waters says they tell them “to find us the best stories we weren’t told in school, or pitch us a story about someone we know so much about, and it’s a story that we never heard,” he said during the show’s panel at Deadline’s Contenders Television virtual event. “Of the stories we like the most, we find theme out of that.”
Some of this season’s notable episodes include “Bad Blood,” which features the story about Cleopatra’s (Aubrey Plaza) younger sister Arsinoe (Olivia Trujillo) scheming her way in and out of power in Ancient Egypt. Also, very timely with what’s going on right now,...

Even though Derek Waters is always excited to pursue new things, he still loves being able to come back to making “Drunk History” and getting to enjoy the collaborative process. “I’m just surrounded by people that I just want to keep working with,” he tells us in our recent webchat (watch the video above), which include production designer Monica Sotto, costume designer Christina Mongini and cinematographer Logan Schneider. Even with all of these efforts, Waters still loves mining the humor of the show’s premise. “I still believe in the comedy of this feeling like a community college trying as hard as they can to make a history show, it’s just not going that well.”

[Note: The following interview contains spoilers for the “Silicon Valley” series finale, “Exit Event.”]
Throughout “Silicon Valley,” Jared Dunn felt like the ultimate companion. The trusty employee eager to please founder Richard Hendricks and the other various employees, Jared was the loyal, dependable piece of the Pied Piper puzzle amidst a frequent torrent of chaos.
Airing its finale Sunday night after a six-season run on HBO, “Silicon Valley” has now come to its close. So it’s both fitting and somewhat poetic that the man behind Jared, Zach Woods, has an analogy for his experience over those half-dozen years, one rooted in one of the most famous companion stories of all time.
“There’s this book, ‘The Velveteen Rabbit’ that I really love a lot. It’s a kid’s book, but I think it’s actually kind of profound,” Woods told IndieWire. “In the book, the toy rabbit asks another toy what it means to be real. The horse who he’s asking...

This may come as a surprise, but Comedy Central’s Drunk History officially won an Emmy last year. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the Outstanding Variety Sketch Series award the show was nominated for (a nod the series also landed this year), but instead for the wonderful historical costumes crafted by Christina Mongini. However, if the new Drunk […]
