Jack London’s “White Fang,” the classic story of a wild wolf-dog rendered against the harsh environment of gold-rush Alaska, has spawned a number of cinematic adaptations — a well-regarded 1991 live-action feature starring Ethan Hawke, a 1993 animated series — but it’s in the hands of French animator Alexandre Espigares that the tale comes to its most vivid life. Adapted from London’s novel by a cadre of screenwriters (there are three listed in the film’s official press kit: Dominique Monfery, Philippe Lioret, and Serge Frydman), Espigares’ film captures the essence of London’s hard-knock story while reimagining it for a slightly younger audience (in short, it’s still traumatic, but not traumatic enough to drive away the audience who will also love it so very much).

One of my favorite books as a kid was Jack London’s White Fang. I just absolutely love that story, and I also really enjoy Disney’s 1991 live-action adaptation that starred a young Ethan Hawke.
I’ve now learned from Deadline that there’s an animated adaptation of the novel coming bring Big Beach, who teamed up with the French animation company Superprod and Luxembourg-bassed Bidibul Productions. Big Beach is the production company that brought us Little Miss Sunshine.
The movie is set to be directed by Alexandre Espirages, who won an Academy Award for an animated short film that he made called "Mr. Hublot." The script comes from Dominique Monfery (Tarzan, Hercules), Philippe Lioret, and Serge Frydman.
I have no idea what to expect from this animated film, but I hope that they do the story justice. If for some reason you’ve never read the book or seen the movie,...

Like most animation purists, I have been pretty bummed out over the decline of traditional hand-drawn style feature films this last decade. In 2009, a glimmer of hope entered my radar with the discovery of the teaser for White Fang, a French animated adaptation of Jack London's classic novel of the same name. The quality of the visuals brought back for me fond memories of the glory years at Disney. However, my hopes were crushed when I soon learned that the studio producing the film had been closed down. Fortunately, the project is still alive and we now have a poster and the first image via the new production company Superprod. Dominique Monfery, a former supervising animator at Disney and the director of Eleanor's Secret,...

Director James Cameron's "Avatar" commanded the international circuit on the weekend, soaring to No. 1 with boxoffice of $165.5 million in its opening five days from 14,604 screens in 106 territories.
"Avatar's" actual weekend figure on the foreign circuit was $6.3 million more than the $159.2 million reported on Sunday due, said distributor 20th Century Fox, "to the unexpected increase in boxoffice from Saturday to Sunday (about 3% overall)."
Fox said the much-anticipated futuristic 3D spectacle's worldwide gross total of $242.5 million ranks as the "highest-grossing nonfranchise, nonsequel opening ever." The overseas per-screen average was $11,334.
"We are off to a great start," said Paul Hanneman, co-president of Fox Theatrical International, who noted that "Avatar," while benefiting from solid reviews overseas, had to defy tough winter weather in many European markets. On the basis of favorable word-of-mouth, Hanneman predicts that "Avatar" grosses will hold relatively strongly in the coming weeks.
"We played 106 markets, and we were No.
