In early November 2023, DreamWorks founder Jeffrey Katzenberg made headlines when he claimed that generative artificial intelligence could cut the cost of animated films by "90 percent." It's a bold claim coming from the man whose recent success stories include being behind the "groundbreaking" streaming service Quibi, which lasted a whopping seven months and cost a reported $1.75 billion, but one that should worry creatives everywhere. It certainly doesn't help when we have filmmakers like Joe Russo claiming AI to be "the future of storytelling."
Disney has already been busted for creating digital replicas of background extras without compensation, and voiceover artists are already seeing roles replaced with AI. AI is a legitimate problem and threat to the industry, not because it can legitimately replace human beings in creative fields but because plenty of people in positions of power (and therefore control the checkbook) believe it can. And it'll take years and untold...

This article contains minor spoilers for "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem."
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" director Jeff Rowe has a fantastic animation pedigree, having written on "Gravity Falls" and "Disenchantment" as well as co-writing/directing "The Mitchells vs. the Machines" with Mike Rianda. The latter centers on a dysfunctional family fighting against a robot uprising, told from the perspective of teenage filmmaker, Katie Mitchell.
During an interview with /Film's own Ethan Anderton, Rowe confirmed that Katie Mitchell, the budding filmmaker at the center of "The Mitchells vs. the Machines" not only exists in-universe of the new "Tmnt" flick but is also a bit of a viral star. At one point in "Mutant Mayhem," April O'Neil (Ayo Edebiri) confesses to the Turtles that one of her most embarrassing moments was when she puked live on camera during the morning announcements at school.

In the beginning, there was "Toy Story." Pixar's first feature film set the standard for CG animated movies in 1995, and each successive film built upon that framework, whether made by Pixar, DreamWorks, or any number of their competitors. The tools and pipelines used to make these movies became holy writs, and breaking from them was unthinkable. Yet there were those who challenged the status quo. 2008's "Kung Fu Panda" featured an introductory sequence in 2D, directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson. The staff of 2015's "The Peanuts Movie" worked hard to translate the charms of the original comic strip into beautifully textured CG. But "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" was more than just a challenger. Its release in 2018 was the animation equivalent of Martin Luther hammering his 95 Theses onto Pixar's door. There was no going back.
"The Mitchells vs the Machines" was tasked with following up on the most important animated film in recent memory.

The horror fandom is one of the most dedicated and passionate cultural communities in existence, with countless conventions, festivals, and celebrations happening year-round — all connected by the mutual appreciation for frightful films. Some may go so far as to call the horror fandom a "family," but in the case of two of horror's most promising young actors, that description is literal. Madeleine and Violet McGraw are both still in their adolescent years, but have given performances in horror films that some adult actors could only dream of pulling off. Oftentimes, memorable horror performances from children are rooted in the "killer kid" subgenre, but for the McGraw sisters, the young performers both shine as hero protagonists.

Is classical music a niche art for an ageing audience that will soon be gone? Plenty of people in the media think so, which is why its coverage is often relegated to obscure corners, turning it into a dutiful filler rather than something to celebrate. And when the head of Arts Council England defends the decision to kill off one of London’s two major opera houses – opining that it’s not needed, and that the future of opera lies in car parks and pubs – denizens of the classical music world need to hold their nerve.

There's never a bad time to sing the praises of "The Mitchells Vs The Machines," a breathtaking work of animation that chronicles a robot uprising through the lens of a dysfunctional family road trip. Part action-adventure and part family drama, the refreshing apocalypse tale showed off its exhilarating visual style with a sweet, heartwarming story, so no wonder it captured so many hearts. Then there's the fact that this film boasts something that remains exceedingly uncommon in animated studio films: a queer lead.
The film follows Katie Mitchell (voiced by openly queer actress Abbi Johnson), a quirky, aspiring filmmaker who clashes with her technophobe...

For Netflix’s The Mitchells vs. the Machines, produced by Sony Pictures Animation, the idea of “Katie Vision” was bounced around for a bit, until production designer Lindsey Olivares got her hands on one of their animation tests. Director Mike Rianda said, “One weekend without telling anyone, she just stole some animation and drew on the screen and made it just with the crappy Photoshop she had on her computer. It was so exciting to see basically the super-expensive animated movie that some teenager had graffitied all over.”
The story of The Mitchells vs. the Machines is told from the perspective of Katie Mitchell, an aspiring film student. “Katie Vision” was used to give the film the aesthetic of an eager film student.
Deadline: When I spoke to the director, Mike Rianda, he mentioned that you came up with the idea for “Katie Vision.”

Netflix owned the Annie Awards on Saturday, picking up 20 of the night’s 31 competitive trophies during the virtual show. Neon’s animated documentary “Flee,” by Jonas Poher Rasmussen, was named best indie feature.
In addition to the top film award, “Mitchells,” from Sony Pictures Animation for Netflix, won awards for writing, FX, character design, production design, voice acting and editorial. The victory could give it an edge at the Academy Awards, with final Oscar voting set to start Thursday.
“This team never settled for anything that wasn’t original, bold or new and they broke the rules,” said Christopher Miller, who produced the film along with his Lord Miller partner Phil Lord and Sony Pictures Animation’s Kurt Albrecht.

Netflix’s “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” dominated the 49th annual Annie Awards on Saturday, winning eight awards to only three for Disney’s “Encanto.” While “Mitchells” from Mike Rianda and Jeff Rowe has won more critics’ awards than “Encanto,” the Disney film has won virtually every Hollywood guild award and is the prohibitive favorite to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
“Mitchells” won in every one of the eight categories in which it was nominated at the Annie Awards, including Best Feature, Best Direction, Best Writing and Best Voice Acting (Abbi Jacobson). The three wins for “Encanto” – for character animation, music and storyboarding – came in categories in which “Mitchells” was not nominated.
Netflix won an additional 12 awards in the 13 TV categories, nine of them for “Arcane.” Overall, the company was nominated in 25 categories and won in 20 of those.

Look through the list of this year’s Oscar nominees in the animated feature category and you’ll find each hero’s journey hinges on the same thing — family. They’re either struggling to break free, trying to find their place in the world or looking back on a mystery. In every case, it’s messy.
Most of the filmmakers leaned into their own experiences with family and mined tidbits for their films. The result is movies that hits specific notes but play well for larger audiences who see themselves in the families on screen.

Editors note: Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series debuts and celebrates the scripts of films that will be factors in this year’s movie awards race.
The generation gap has inspired many an animated movie. From Ariel defying her father to explore dry land to Moana leaving her family’s island, animated movies often appeal to rebellious kids. The Netflix original The Mitchells vs. the Machines understands the gap but offers some hope for harmonious families.
Katie Mitchell (voice of Abbi Jacobson) is a film buff who wants to go to film school. Her father, Rick (Danny McBride), doesn’t quite understand her passion and takes the family on one last bonding trip before Katie leaves. The Mitchells picked the right time to go camping, because computers and robots take over the world. That leaves the Mitchell family as humanity’s last hope, and also forces father and daughter to work through their issues.

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a 21st century Homo sapien in possession of good fortune, must be in want of dependable Wi-Fi. Take that away, and chaos reigns. The result of a rogue A.I. kickstarting the singularity in earnest by switching off wireless internet access isn’t the funniest scene in The Mitchells vs. the Machines — there’s a lot of competition for that honor — but it might be the one extended joke that cuts deep enough to hit bone. Ding goes the giant button as it slides from on to off.

The new animated family adventure The Mitchells vs. the Machines offers a rousing tale of a seemingly dysfunctional family caught in the midst of a worldwide attempt by sentient machines to, well, destroy all humans. While it might sound like more serious science-fiction fare, it most assuredly is not that. Make no mistake, there is fun to be had for all in this well-made, character-driven, thoroughly entertaining tale of a family coming together to preserve what is most important – family.
The film follows the family Mitchell, particularly teenager Katie Mitchell, as the group escorts Katie to her first year of film school via road trip in the family station wagon. Of course, this family bonding exercise doesn’t go exactly as planned after electronic devices across the globe develop sentience and turn against humankind. Still, despite the disagreements between father and daughter, the Mitchells attempt to persevere through their familial...

As the creative minds behind The Lego Movie, 21 Jump Street and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Phil Lord and Chris Miller have an undeniable track record for pulling off unlikely concepts. Coming to Netflix April 30th is The Mitchells vs. The Machines.
From the humans who brought you the Academy Award-winning Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and The Lego Movie comes The Mitchells vs. The Machines, an animated action-comedy about an ordinary family who find themselves in the middle of their biggest family challenge yet…saving the world from the robot apocalypse. No big deal, right? It all starts when creative outsider Katie Mitchell is accepted into the film school of her dreams and is eager to leave home and find “her people,” when her nature-loving dad insists on having the whole family drive her to school and bond during one last totally-not-awkward-or-forced road trip. Everything from smart phones, to roombas, to evil Furbys are employed to capture every human on the planet.

"What would a functional family do?!" Netflix has revealed the new official trailer for the animated movie now known as The Mitchells vs. The Machines, the latest creation of the Lord / Miller + Sony Pictures Animation team following their Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse success. The Mitchells will have to work together to save the world. Featuring the voices of Abbi Jacobson, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Mike Rianda, Eric André, and Olivia Colman. Netflix has released the first official trailer for “The Mitchells vs. The Machines,” the animated comedy from executive producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the hitmaker duo behind “The Lego Movie” and Oscar winner “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” Written and directed by Michael Rianda and Jeff Rowe, “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” is a star-studded family comedy about an everyday family’s struggle to relate while technology rises up around the world.
When Katie Mitchell (Abbi Jacobson), a creative outsider, is accepted into the film school of her dreams, her plans to meet “her people” at college are upended when her nature-loving dad Rick (Danny McBride) determines the whole family should drive Katie to school together and bond as a family one last time. On the drive to campus they come across a tech uprising, leaving them to figure out how to save the world from a technological singularity.

Theatrical distribution took another hit, as streamer Netflix acquired “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” (formerly “Connected”) from Sony Pictures Animation. The sci-fi comedy from Oscar-winning producers Phil Lord & Chris Miller (“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”) was originally scheduled for release last October 23 but postponed because of the pandemic. It will now stream globally later this year (except in China) under its original title (scripted by director Mike Rianda of “Gravity Falls” fame and co-director Jeff Rowe), and will not compete in this year’s awards season.
“We are overwhelmed by the enthusiasm Netflix has expressed for this movie with this acquisition and grateful to everyone at Sony for making a great picture with us and finding a big way to bring it to audiences,” said Lord & Miller in a prepared statement. “We’re really proud of the film we all made together, plus we understand our subscription fees are waived in...

Breaking: Don’t count on Sony Animation’s Lord & Miller movie Connected for this fall. The feature joins a number of other features fleeing the immediate fall calendar or delaying until later in the year, or even in 2021. Connected, last scheduled for Oct. 23, is now being moved by the studio to an unset future date this year.
Studios saw what Tenet‘s (and other films’) grosses were like without New York and Los Angeles, and both cities are required to be part of a tentpole’s marketing blitz; hence the meltdown of the immediate theatrical fall schedule. Connected joins Wonder Woman 1984 which was recently delayed from Oct. 2 to Christmas Day, STX’s Greenland, which moved to a Tbd 4Q date after stepping off of its Sept. 25 release, and Universal/MGM’s Candyman which jumped from Oct. 16 to next year Tbd as notable delayed releases. Also, we’re waiting to see...

As the Annecy International Animation Film Festival starts up online today, Connected director Mike Rianda showed off some sneak peek work-in-progress footage of Sony Pictures Animation’s upcoming release. He also discussed the inspirations for the movie, which include Spiderman: Into The Spider-Verse, his own “insane family” and a longtime fascination with technology.
Rianda was introduced in a pre-recorded video by producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller who appeared against backdrops of the southeastern French town, and said the film is being finished. Miller noted, “It’s coming together beautifully. We’re almost there, excited to bring it to all of you this fall.”

Cate Blanchett has played queens, vagabonds and Bob Dylan. Now the double Oscar-winner is hitting the London stage and hinting at a farewell from acting. We talk to the team behind the avant garde play about sexual domination
Cate Blanchett strides into the room and plomps herself down on the sofa. In front of us – this is meant to be lunch – a table is piled high with sandwiches, fruit, salads and a copy of the script she has spent all morning rehearsing. She prods at it with a finger, hooting with laughter. “Any pointers?” she asks. I glance across at the other sofa, where Martin Crimp, the playwright, is settling himself in. He gazes back impassively. This might be a joke; it might not.
We’re backstage at the National Theatre to discuss Blanchett’s appearance in Crimp’s new play – her debut here, and her first appearance on the London stage in seven years.

The Ocean’s 8 star will join The Tunnel’s Stephen Dillane in When We Have Sufficiently Tortured Each Other – Twelve Variations on Samuel Richardson’s Pamela. The play will be directed by Anatomy of a Suicide director Katie Mitchell.
The play tells the story of a young maid terrorised and imprisoned by a libertine nobleman and the National Theatre said it was a “a dangerous game of sexual domination and resistance”.
It marks the first time that Blanchett, who lives in the UK, will return to the theater in seven years.
