Don't want to deal with cooking or washing dishes on Thanksgiving, or just need a break from the family for a few hours? Stop by any of the Austin Alamo Drafthouse locations for a movie accompanied by a traditional turkey dinner -- my mother never made green bean casserole and my mouth waters imagining Alamo's version of sweet potato casserole. Just select the "Turkey Dinner" option when purchasing any ticket for Thursday, November 22.
Ut fans can also secure a seat at Alamo Lake Creek's broadcast of the Ut-tcu game by purchasing a $5 food and beverage voucher or the turkey dinner option. Make note of the revised age policy for the game as stated on their web page -- "Children age 3 and over will be allowed at all screenings of this show. No infants however, and families with loud children will be asked to leave."

Chicago – One of the best urban legacies in older cities like Chicago is the revitalization of venerable movie palaces, and one of the those stories in 2011 was the reopening of the Patio Theater. Located on the northwest side of the city at Irving Park Road and Austin Avenue, the Patio recently reached a goal on the fundraising website Kickstarter to purchase new digital projection, which will allow it to remain open.

R.L. Burnside first recorded at age 40, remained obscure until 65, and was a legend at 75. Born on November 23, 1926 in Oxford, Mississippi, he spent most of his life in his rural native area, where he worked as a sharecropper as late as 1979, though he lived in Chicago and Memphis for short periods. His appearance in the Robert Mugge/Robert Palmer 1992 documentary movie and soundtrack album Deep Blues and his acclaimed 1994 Fat Possum album Too Bad Jim seemed to come out of nowhere to catch the attention of not only blues fans but also the underground rock crowd. But R.L. (pronounced "Rule" by his friends) had been on an Arhoolie compilation LP in 1967, and as his fame rose, several pre-Deep Blues albums reappeared with wider distribution.
Where did Burnside's striking style come from? The decline of the Mississippi sharecropping system and the region's subsequent economic slump led to many railroad lines being discontinued.

The think tank American Freedom Alliance said today it will screen the full unedited version of the 2006 ABC miniseries The Path to 9/11 on Sunday, Sept. 11, the 10-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. The group bills the event at the Intercontinental Hotel in Century City as the first time the unedited version will be shown, after ABC trimmed about a minute of footage ahead of its original broadcast airing — a move the mini’s writer-producer Cyrus Nowrasteh said was due to political pressure from Democrats who disputed the facts portrayed in the script, which was critical of President Bill Clinton for not killing Osama bin Laden when given the opportunity in 1998. (ABC advertised that the mini was based on the 9/11 Commission report, but commission member Richard Ben-Veniste and the Clinton Administration were among those that disputed its version of events). That same pressure, Nowrasteh has claimed many times since, has delayed the...

Photo via U.S. Department of State.Following two frustrating years trying to facilitate an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement, United States Mideast Envoy George Mitchell is stepping down. The Washington Post reports: Mitchell, 77, was appointed as a special envoy to the region in the early weeks of the Obama presidency as the new administration sought to energize the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and make it a central component of a larger Middle East strategy. But despite more than two years of shuttle diplomacy and dozens of meetings with representatives from the two sides, he was unable to gain significant traction in prodding the two sides toward a negotiated settlement. Since when is stepping down following a failure to make significant progress on one’s stated objectives a principle of U.S. foreign policy?...

Does the president really suffer from what House Speaker John Boehner calls a "spending illness" ? Not according to an exclusive Newsweek-Daily Beast estimate of his outlays on new legislation since taking office.

Nothing unites Republicans quite like the unshakable belief that Barack Obama has become the Carrie Bradshaw of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, unable to stop himself from frittering away ridiculous sums of money on frivolous things. But what Republicans never mention when railing against Obama's alleged fiscal recklessness is how much money he has spent, and what exactly he's spent it on.
Obama has slashed one tax dollar for every dollar he's spent on government programs.
To rectify the situation, Newsweek and The Daily Beast have come up with an exclusive estimate of the amount the president has spent on new legislation since taking office in January 2009. This...

A nephew of Walt, he restored Disney to classic cartoon status
Roy E Disney, who has died from stomach cancer aged 79, was the last member of the Disney family involved in the company and saw himself as the protector of its tradition. As the family enterprise grew into a huge conglomerate, he retained a strong influence. Twice he exiled himself from the business and then returned to lead shareholder revolts which saw the corporation's leadership thrown out and its direction returned to traditional strengths, particularly cartoons.
He grew up with the Walt Disney Co, originally the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio. His father, Roy Oliver, handled finances while his uncle Walt ran the creative side and was the public face. Mickey Mouse was created in 1928; two years later Roy was born. In some ways, he was the son Walt never had. He attended test screenings when young and later remembered the...
