It's easily one of the biggest cult classic films of all time and Troma Entertainment's The Toxic Avenger has been in the process of being remade for a long time. Producers first got the remake rights back in early 2010, but by the end of that year, director Steve Pink (Hot tub Time Machine) had been hired to write and direct a PG-13 action comedy take on Troma's very R-rated original. Pink wrote the screenplay with Daniel C. Mitchell, their story followed an average teen who joins an environmental club in hopes to impress his crush. Then while investigating a waste plant, he falls into a tub of waste and transforms into a radioactive hero.
Arnold Schwarzenegger was even offered a role in 2013, but it wasn't clear if he would play, and John Travolta was even rumored to be up for a role.

Deadline reports that Sausage Party co-director Conrad Vernon has signed on to direct The Toxic Avenger remake. Writers Mike Arnold and Chris Poole are rewriting the screenplay from Steve Pink and D.C. Mitchell.
Akiva Goldsman and Charlie Corwin of Weed Road will produce the film alongside Richard Saperstein of Storyscape Entertainment. The Toxic Avenger Creators Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz will serve as executive producers on the remake.
The Toxic Avenger was a B-movie horror/comedy that was released in 1984 and told the story of a mop boy named Melvin who works at a local health club. Because of Sausage Party co-director Conrad Vernon, moviegoers will never look at groceries the same way. The filmmaker's next project will take him from store aisles to the town of Tromaville, as Vernon is now set to helm the remake of 1984's The Toxic Avenger.
Variety (via Deadline) reports that Vernon will direct The Toxic Avenger remake from a screenplay by Mike Arnold and Chris Poole, who will rewrite a previous remake script penned by D.C. Mitchell and Steve Pink. In addition to co-writing the prior script for the remake, Pink was at one point lined up to direct the film as well.

Action hero turned Politician Arnold Schwarzenegger is in talks to bring Troma classic The Toxic Avenger back to life, according to a report over at Deadline this week.
The reboot will be directed by Hot Tub Time Machine’s Steve Pink who has also co-written the script alongside writing partner Daniel C. Mitchell. But for those of you hoping the former Terminator star will be appearing as the tutu wearing anti-hero himself will be most disappointed when we tell you big Arnie is in talks for a less prominent, less mutated and let’s face it less ridiculous role.
According to Deadline, Schwarzenegger will play a character called ‘The Exterminator’ (so clever Hollywood) who mentors the titular hero after he is transformed from a geeky janitor into a superhuman creature after being dumped in a cannister of toxic waste by a group of local high school thugs.

What's weirder, that the former Governor of California might appear in "The Toxic Avenger," or that there's a 21st Century remake of the freaky underground favorite in the works? The original "Toxic Avenger" was a low-budget, gross-out comedy about a nerd who mutates into a gnarly superhero and takes on the bad guys of Tromaville, NJ. Although it's not clear which part Arnold Schwarzenegger is in talks to play, this is indubitably an odd move for the former Terminator. Heck, it's an odd move to reboot this for today's audience, even with an updated story: to wit, "an average teen joins an environmental club to impress his crush. While doing some investigating at a waste plant, he is thrown into a tub of waste and transforms into a radioactive hero." Writer and director Lloyd Kaufman and his studio, Troma Entertainment, have been an endless font of modern B-movie madness since the '70s.

In a surprising move, Arnold Schwarzenegger has chosen to star in a reimagining of Troma's classic 1984 low-budget horror movie "The Toxic Avenger".
The new version sees an average teen join an environmental club to impress his crush. While doing some investigating at a waste plant, he is thrown into a tub of waste and transforms into a radioactive hulking mess who fights bad guys.
Steve Pink ("Hot Tub Time Machine") directs from a script he co-wrote with Daniel C. Mitchell. Akiva Goldsman and Richard Saperstein are producing.
Schwarzenegger will play former black ops agent "The Exterminator," who trains Toxie to use his powers for good.

The reboot of the 1980s cult film Toxic Avenger has Arnold Schwarzenegger in talks. Steve Pink and Daniel C. Mitchell wrote the script for the film which is being produced by Elysium Films as well as Richard Saperstein, Akiva Goldsman, Charlie Corwin and Michael Benaroya. The story follows Melvin Ferd III, a skinny, feeble guy who falls into toxic waste and transforms into a creature who fights crime. Michael Herz and Lloyd Kaufman directed the original film which starred Andrew Maranda, Mitch Cohen, Jennifer Babtist, Cindy Manion and Robert Prichard. There were three films: The Toxic Avenger (1984), The Toxic Avenger Part II (1989) and The Toxic Avenger: The Last Temptation of Toxie (1989).

Unexpected casting possibility of the day: Arnold Schwarzenegger in the reboot of The Toxic Avenger? Well, according to Variety, he’s in talks for a lead role in the film, even if it’s not the lead. While Schwarzenegger may end up co-starring, he won’t actually be playing the mutant main role.Director/co-writer Steve Pink (he crafted the script with Daniel C. Mitchell for Elysium Films) is developing the tale of Melvin, a socially and, to some degree, mentally challenged caretaker at a health spa who is ignored by women, sneered at by co-workers and generally finds life tough. His naïveté sees him thrown into a vat of toxic waste by leering criminal types. But he emerges as a muscular warrior who, despite his melty appearance, is a hit with the ladies and uses his newfound powers for good. While the original was a flop on release, it...

Here's a bit of entertainment casting news that completely came out of left field. Arnold Schwarzenegger is in talks to join the remake of the terribly fantastic 1980's cult film Toxic Avenger. I'm still not sure why this film is being remade, but if Schwarzenegger is on board, it's going to make it a hell of a lot more interesting. At the same time... is this really what the actor has resorted to? He's up for a lead role in the movie, but it isn't the Toxic Avenger. At one point John Travota was rumored to be up for a part, but thank goodness that didn't happen.
Two years ago it was announced that Steve Pink (Hot Tub Time Machine) would direct the film, and it looks like he's still attached to helm it from a script that he co-wrote with Daniel C. Mitchell. Pink had this to say in a previous statement,...

Both Arnold Schwarzenegger and The Toxic Avenger movies could be considered relics from the 1980s, but now the two worlds are going to be combined. Variety is reporting that Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has kept busy with movies like The Expendables 2, The Last Stand and the upcoming Escape Plan, is now in talks to star in a reboot featuring the famous mutated monster hero. Schwarzenegger won't be taking the titular role in the movie, but the trade says that he will be playing "another lead role." The "reimagining" is described by sources as being a more mainstream action-adventure film, suggesting that the property could lose a little of its midnight madness charm.Screenwriter Steve Pink, whose credits include Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity, is working on the screenplay with newcomer Daniel C. Actor and 747 pilot John Travolta has been reportedly attached to The Toxic Avenger, the Steve Pink-directed remake of the Troma classic comedy about a mutated superhero and it’s not an early April Fool’s joke.
According to industry tracking website It’s On The Grid Travolta is indeed attached to the remake of Lloyd Kaufman’s Toxic Avenger, which Pink will write with Daniel C. Mitchell.
Here’s the original 1986 synopsis:

Many of you may not even have any interest in a remake of the campy 1984 cult classic, The Toxic Avenger. But for those of you who are, a director has been signed and sealed.
Steve Pink, who is best known for his work directing the hit comedy, Hot Tub Time Machine, has signed on to helm the project, as well as write the script along with Daniel C. Mitchell. Director Steve Pink has already handled one delightfully ludicrous concept and film title in the form of "Hot Tub Time Machine," and many would argue that he lived up to the challenge quite well. But how is he going to fare against a different delightfully ludicrous concept, especially when this one beats its enemies with a mop?
We'll find out fairly soon, as Pink has officially signed on to direct the remake of "The Toxic Avenger." Deadline reports that Pink is co-writing the screenplay for the stinky green hero's big screen revival alongside Daniel C. Mitchell.
"The Toxic Avenger is exactly what the country -- wait, that's not big enough -- what the world needs right now," Pink said of his latest assignment in a statement.
First hitting theaters in 1984, the original "The Toxic Avenger" told the story of Melvin Ferd, a local janitor that's constantly victimized by a group of bullies.

The 1984 horror/comedy/action cult classic The Toxic Avenger is getting a redo. Deadline reports that Hot Tub Time Machine director Steve Pink has been selected to helm the project. Pink, who also wrote High Fidelity and Grosse Pointe Blank, will team with his Dead Last collaborator Daniel C. Mitchell.
If you haven’t seen the original, it follows “a mop-wielding simpleton named Melvin, whose trusting ways made him easy prey for gym thugs who tossed him into a vat of toxic waste. The transformation into Toxie didn’t help his complexion, but gave him rippling muscles to wreak havoc on New Jersey polluters. The byproduct was that despite his misshapen appearance, the chicks finally dig Melvin after a lifetime of being ignored.”
Pink also has big plans, saying in a statement, “The Toxic Avenger is exactly what the country–wait, that’s not big enough–what the world needs right now.
