“The Flight Attendant” is a major contender for the 2021 Emmy Awards. The hour-long thriller is on track to be the first Best Comedy Series nominee for HBO Max; the streaming service launched last year with only Anna Kendrick vehicle “Love Life” in contention for the 2020 cycle. “The Flight Attendant” debuted its eight-episode first season last fall, then picked up bids for both Best Comedy Series and Best Comedy Actress for Kaley Cuoco early this year at both the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards.
It more importantly also scored nominations from seven industry guilds and societies that overlap memberships with the Television Academy that votes on the Emmys. This set of seven tied it with “Ted Lasso” to lead all comedies that aired in 2020. 16 of the key creatives behind “The Flight Attendant” chatted with Gold Derby via webcam to discuss making the show, reflect on their recent nominations and preview the ordered next season.

“Ideas come from everywhere. The reality is everybody in the world thinks they are a casting director,” says two-time Emmy Award-winning casting director John Papsidera in an exclusive interview with Gold Derby (watch the video above). He contends this year with the first season of “The Flight Attendant,” which he cast with Beth Bowling and Kim Miscia, the two-time nominated pair that put Jon Hamm in “Mad Men” and gave Chadwick Boseman his first role. Papsidera continues, “The reality is that if you’re open to the process and open to doing your job in a real thoughtful — not ‘important,’ but thorough — way that those things come to you and it comes in all different shapes and manners, so I try and remain as open as I can to the process and to seeing people because that’s how you find people.”

While Netflix’s “When They See Us,” which won casting for a limited series, and HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” which won casting for a drama series at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards earlier this month, have the potential to repeat their accomplishments thanks to the newly announced nominations. The competition for comedy series casting is wide open, with Emmy-winning “Fleabag” not nominated by Csa.
As for networks, Netflix far and away outstripped its competitors, scoring an impressive 19 television Artios Award nominations, compared to just eight for HBO, four for Hulu, three for FX, and two for Amazon Prime Video.

Three new ABC Family pilots set to go into production this fall have casting directors attached, Backstage has learned. The multi-camera "Phys Ed" is being cast by Alyson Silverberg and Geralyn Flood, who are teaming up for this pilot. Crime dramas, conspiracy thrillers, and down-home narratives about youthful angst will be among the new shows entering our homes this fall TV season. All will be seeking actors for a range of roles: guest spots, recurring, perhaps even a principal part. We spoke to CDs of several shows to find out what they might need. "Body of Proof," Drama, ABCAs the title suggests, "Body of Proof" is a crime drama. But it's somewhat different from the usual fare, says casting director Rosalie Joseph. In addition to solving murders, the characters are advocates for the victims, giving peace and closure to their survivors. Set in Philadelphia (but shot in Providence, R.I.), the story centers on Dr. Megan Hunt (Dana Delaney), a top-notch neurosurgeon who is forced to give up her medical practice in the wake of a devastating car crash and resume her career as a medical examiner. But within...

I despise thieves of thespians and the shadow these delinquents cast upon honest professionals.Despite having been an actor prior to jumping the audition table to directing and casting, it wasn't until the release of my book, as well as teaching and writing for various publications—when my visibility went from 'that guy behind the audition table' to 'that Paul Russell behind the audition table'—that I fully realized just how cautious actors are about relatively unknown-to-them casting, representation and/or educational opportunities. My anonymity, which I greatly enjoy, and career stature had lulled me into a false sense of security that actors were trusting of entertainment professionals. Wrong. Oops. My bad naïveté. Colleagues of mine—reputable agents, veteran casting directors, established teachers and other long-career-termed entertainment professionals—and I are suspect to a segment of the acting community. Why? Several reasons. First and foremost is because younger and/or...
