Ang Lee who is known for his work on Marvel’s Hulk, directed 2012’s adventure drama film Life of Pi, based on Yann Martel’s 2001 novel of the same name. The movie starred debutant Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Tabu, Rafe Spall, Adil Hussain, and Gérard Depardieu in significant roles. The story follows two survivors of a shipwreck who are on a lifeboat stranded in the Pacific Ocean for 227 days.
Upon its release, the movie received critical acclaim with an appreciation for Lee’s direction, screenplay, music, visual effects, and cinematography. The movie was nominated for eleven awards at the 85th annual Academy Awards and managed to win four out of them. Ahead of the 96th Academy Awards, a comment from a veteran cinematographer about Life of Pi has resurfaced on the Internet.

Sporting events captivate viewers everywhere, whether they are showing a competition or an athlete doing the impossible, but enticing an audience through a sports film in the same way can be a difficult task. It’s up to the cinematographers to bring a unique point of view that will highlight the tension and drama, and put viewers on the edge of their seats.

Underwater cinematographer Peter Zuccarini has worked on some of the biggest movies of all time and swam with sharks (“Into the Blue”) and crocodiles (“The Motorcycle Diaries”) to get his shots, so one might think that a modest character study about a 60-year-old swimmer trying to fulfill a youthful ambition wouldn’t have anything new to offer him. Yet according to Zuccarini, telling the true story of Diana Nyad (Annette Bening) and her 110-mile swim between Cuba and Florida in Netflix’s “Nyad” offered him satisfaction unlike any he had ever experienced on set.
“Watching the movie I was thinking to myself, ‘I have never done this before,'” Zuccarini told IndieWire. “I’ve never been able to move a camera around someone so closely.” Indeed, one of the great strengths of “Nyad” is the intimate access that it gives the viewer to Diana’s emotional experience in the water,...

Film cameras strike big time as it seems that Dp chose celluloid to shoot the Oscar 2024 (96th Academy Awards) contenders. The most used camera is the Arricam (Lt and St) which, you have to admit, is an amazing fact. Additionally, there are new cameras on that list. Explore the camera charts below based on the IndieWire Cinematography Survey.

Netflix has released the poster and the first clip from Nyad, the true story of open water swimmer Diana Nyad's attempt to swim from Cuba to Florida at 60 years of age. The film is the first narrative feature from Oscar-winning documentarians Elisabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin and it's based on the memoir "Find a Way". The film hits theaters on October 20th for two weeks before landing on Netflix. As for myself, I'll see it on the big screen not just for the always amazing Annette Bening but also because the cinematographer is Oscar winner Claudio Miranda so maybe there are gorgeous images of the open water?

Diana Nyad was a swimming legend, a stellar athlete in the 1970s who achieved the heights of her sport, and then went on to a successful decades-long career in the broadcast booth for ABC Sports, ESPN, and elsewhere.
The new movie Nyad is not about any of that. In this regard, the film, a first narrative effort from Oscar-winning documentary filmmakers Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, has something in common with Bradley Cooper’s Maestro, which premiered today in Venice. Neither movie is a traditional biopic about their title subject, but rather a movie with a singular focus that digs much deeper into the weeds to discover what drove them and made them who they were.
For a film revolving around an athlete, making this the story of a champion who starts all over at age 60 is decidedly an un-Hollywood-like thing to do. The fact...

Filmmakers Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin held the first screening of their Oscar-winning documentary, Free Solo, in Telluride five years ago. So it seems appropriate that their first narrative feature, Nyad, also has its world premiere at Telluride this year. Free Solo followed the determination of an obsessed mountain climber, and Nyad also investigates an obsessive athlete: marathon swimmer and journalist Diana Nyad, who resolved to swim from Cuba to Florida, a 110-mile journey, when she was over 60 years old.
The film has already stirred a measure of controversy, with some other athletes and sports commentators critical of some of the exaggerations that Nyad had trumpeted during the course of her long career. But it is to the credit of the filmmakers that even though they want to celebrate Nyad’s achievements, they do not shy away from dramatizing her selfishness and combative personality. And even people who may...

Telluride Film Festival attendees were treated to an honest-to-goodness crowdpleaser on Friday night at the Werner Herzog Theatre in the form of “Nyad.” The feature directing debut from “Free Solo” Oscar winners Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin had the packed audience literally cheering before its credits rolled, an impressive show of support for the filmmakers and distributor Netflix.
Described by Netflix as the “remarkable true story” of long-distance swimmer, sportscaster, author, and motivational speaker Diana Nyad, the film focuses on Nyad’s many attempts to swim from Cuba to Key West, Florida – a feat she finally accomplished in 2013 at the age of 64. Four-time Oscar nominee Annette Bening stars as the prickly and controversial Nyad with two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster playing her steadfast coach, Bonnie Stoll – and the film, adapted from Nyad’s memoir by Julia Cox, gives both actors plenty of strong material with which to work. Chile’s at it again. Since’s Andrés Wood’s breakout “Machuca” in 2004, Chilean filmmakers, led by Pablo Larraín, Sebastián Lelio and now Maite Alberdi, have punched consistently above the country’s weight, consistently winning plaudits at Sundance, Berlin and Cannes. Chile has also won three Oscars – for Claudio Miranda’s cinematography on 2012’s “Life of Pi,” 2015’s animated short “Bear Story” and Lelio’s 2017’s fiction feature “A Fantastic Woman” – more any other South American country apart from Argentina.
First half 2023 has proved no exception in Chile’s statue trawl. Some of the awards on offer are among the biggest out: Alberdi’s “The Eternal Memory,” from Fabula, scooped Sundance’s World Cinema Grand Prize; Andrés Wood’s “News of a Kidnapping” walked off with best series at the Platino Awards, the Spanish-speaking world’s nearest kudos fest to the Oscars.

De-aging has come a long way, from “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” to “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” in the last 15 years. While “Benjamin Button” won the VFX Oscar for its trailblazing reverse-aging of Brad Pitt, Harrison Ford’s Indy finale (which premiered this week at the Cannes Film Festival ahead of its June 30 theatrical opening) is already being talked up as an Oscar contender for its breakthrough AI-generated de-aging, making the actor look 40 years younger fighting Nazis in the 25-minute opening flashback.

Roger Deakins, legendary cinematographer and knight of the British realm, cut to the chase: In his view several of the best examples of cinematography are missing from this year’s Oscars list.
“The best cinematography hasn’t been nominated,” he tells me at the British consul general’s Oscars reception.
Which film I ask?
“It’s The Batman. That’s the best work in my view,” he says as he heaped acclaim on Greig Fraser’s “extraordinary” visual flair for the Warner Bros movie directed by Matt Reeves.
The picture should have been a contender in that category, Deakins insists.
“The reason it wasn’t is pure and simple: snobbery. There’s this unfair tendency to avoid the Marvel universe and the other popular universes,” he says.
Claudio Miranda, the director of photography of Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick, “is another one that was shut out,” Deakins notes.
“It comes down to the work.

“You saved Hollywood’s ass.” That’s what Steven Spielberg told his fellow best picture nominee Tom Cruise at the Oscars Nominees Luncheon on Feb. 13, a remark that was captured in a now-viral video clip. And while Cruise’s star power and producing muscle played a major part in Top Gun: Maverick‘s success — it was the top-grossing film of 2022 and resuscitated theatrical distribution from a pandemic-driven coma — another key player was Jerry Bruckheimer, the producing giant who helped catapult the original Top Gun into cinemas nearly four decades ago. Now, at 79, Bruckheimer has earned his first Oscar nomination for best picture, proving that a box office megahit can compete in the Oscar race alongside the critical darlings — especially since Maverick managed to be both all at once.

Now that Mandy Walker (“Elvis”) has upset Claudio Miranda (“Top Gun: Maverick”) at the 37th American Society of Cinematographers Awards, all eyes are on next week’s Oscar ceremony, where she is well-positioned to take out another frontrunner, James Friend (“All Quiet on the Western Front”), and become the first female Dp to win the Academy Award for Best Cinematography.
The academy and ASC have awarded the same film only 17 times (47%), but eight of those have occurred between 2011 and 2022, giving the organizations a 66% correlation over the past 12 years. “Elvis” lenser Mandy Walker became the first woman to take top honors from the American Society of Cinematographers on Sunday. She edged out two of her Oscar rivals for Best Cinematography — Roger Deakins (“Empire of Light”) who reaped his 17th bid, and Darius Khondji (“Bardo”) — plus last year’s winner with both the guild and the Oscars Greig Fraser (“The Batman”) and Claudio Miranda (“Top Gun: Maverick”). The other Oscar nominees are James Friend (“All Quiet on the Western Front”) and Florian Hoffmeister (“Tar”).
Over its 37-year history, the ASC has predicted 147 of the 185 Oscar nominees, including four in 2019, 2020 and 2021 and all five in both 2018 and 2017. However, the ASC choice for the best in the business has presaged the eventual winner at the Oscars only 17 times:
Dean Semler, “Dances with Wolves” (1991)
John Toll, “Braveheart” (1996)
John Seale, “The English Patient” (1997)
Russell Carpenter, “Titanic” (1998)

“Elvis” director of photography Mandy Walker won Feature Film at the ASC Awards March 5, when the American Society of Cinematographers handed out its honors at the 37th annual awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Walker’s win in the feature film category could prove prescient; 17 out of the last 36 years found the ASC film winner winning the Academy Award. But it’s worth noting that Oscar nominees “Tár” and “All Quiet on the Western Front” were not among the ASC nominees.
In the TV categories, “The Old Man” took awards for Motion Picture, Limited Series, or Pilot Made for Television and Episode of a One-Hour Television Series – Commercial, while “Barry” won Episode of a Half-Hour Television Series for its Season 3 finale and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” won Episode of a One-Hour Television Series – Non-Commercial for its Season 4 finale.

Elvis cinematographer Mandy Walker cracked a glass ceiling on Sunday, becoming the first woman to win the American Society of Cinematographers Award in the feature competition during the 37th ASC Awards.
The crowd at the Beverly Hilton’s International Ballroom erupted with applause and gave Walker a lengthy standing ovation as her name was called.
“This is for all the women that win this award after me,” she said to enthusiastic applause, and she looked for to more women breaking more glass ceilings. “Thijs is an inclusive, representative community,” she said, adding, “I didn’t cry, I thought I was going to cry.”
She thanked Elvis director Baz Luhrmann for allowing her to “create magic with him;” Catherine Martin for her “support and inspiration; and her crew for “dancing with the camera and flying with the camera” during Austin Butler’s performance as Elvis.

The American Society of Cinematographers handed out its best visual storytelling in feature film award to “Elvis” on Sunday night, and in doing so, Mandy Walker has become the first woman to win the top prize in the society’s history.
Walker triumphed over Greig Fraser (“The Batman”), Darius Khondji, Claudio Miranda (“Top Gun: Maverick” and Roger Deakins (“Empire of Light”) in a very competitive race.
During her speech, she dedicated her win to “all the women who will win the award after me,” and was met with rapturous applause. She hoped for more women to break glass ceilings and continued, “This is an inclusive representative community. Let us all strive for success and show our mission and create art.”
Walker‘s triumph comes as Oscar voting ends on March 7, where she is also nominated. She became only the third woman ever nominated for cinematography for her work on “Elvis.

Mandy Walker has won the American Society of Cinematographers feature-film award for “Elvis,” making her the first woman ever to win that award. She is only the third female nominee in the category, after Rachel Morrison for “Mudbound” in 2018 and Ari Wegner for “The Power of the Dog” last year.
Walker now has the chance to become the first woman to win the Oscar for cinematography, where she is also the third female nominee in the gender-neutral Oscars category that took the longest to nominate a woman. Her competitors at the Oscars include two who were also nominated by the ASC, Roger Deakins for “Empire of Light” and Darius Khondji for “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truth,” along with James Friend for “All Quiet on the Western Front” and Florian Hoffmeister for “Tar.”

We thought “Top Gun: Maverick” was the front-runner to win the Oscar for Best Cinematography. So it was one of the biggest shocks on nominations morning when the film didn’t make the cut at all. But it did earn a nomination at the American Society of Cinematographers Awards. Can it win there to avenge its Oscar snub?
That’s what our odds say. As of this writing “Top Gun” director of photography Claudio Miranda gets leading odds of 10/3 and support from five out of nine Expert journalists we’ve surveyed from major media outlets, seven out of eight Gold Derby Editors, 18 of our Top 24 Users, and 18 of our All-Star Top 24. This would be the first ASC win for Miranda, who previously earned nominations for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” (2008) and “Life of Pi” (2012).

The team is pairing off to discuss each Oscar race. Here's Glenn Dunks and Eric Blume...
Elvis Cinematography by Mandy Walker Oscar Nominated
Glenn: Hi Eric, let's talk all things camera and light—it's Best Cinematography. Can I just start by asking one big question regarding this particular category. What happened to Top Gun: Maverick here? Claudio Miranda, previous Oscar winner for Life of Pi, was supposed to be our runaway favorite and yet on nomination morning, Lydia Tár claimed one final scalp amid her reign of terror. And a second question, I suppose. Did that Top Gun miss just hand this trophy to All Quiet on the Western Front? As much as I am craving a win for Mandy Walker (for many reasons including how historic it would be), I just can't see anything but the German war movie coming out on top here.
Eric: Glenn, two excellent questions.

The Latino Entertainment Journalists Association (Leja) has handed out its awards for the year, with “Everything Everywhere All at Once” scooping up 10 wins including best picture, director for the Daniels and actress for Michelle Yeoh.
The sci-fi comedy led the nominations with 16, the most in the history of the organization.
Paramount’s “Top Gun: Maverick” scored the second-most wins with three for best cinematography going to Claudio Miranda, sound and stunt design.
“I am incredibly excited by the selections of our distinguished group of Latino critics, journalists and writers from all over the country,” said Clayton Davis, Leja founder and president. “I applaud our tiny but mighty organization for selecting a respectable group of films from artists we all love and admire.”
“Wakanda Forever” won prizes for costume design (Ruth E. Carter) and original song.

Before the Oscar nominations were announced, Best Cinematography seemed like one of the easiest categories to predict. After all, Claudio Miranda (“Top Gun: Maverick”) was boasting the greatest precursor haul and a nomination from the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC), but his exclusion from the academy’s lineup leaves the race short a clear frontrunner. While most Gold Derby Experts and users are currently forecasting a win for James Friend (“All Quiet on the Western Front”), several alternatives appear plausible.
“All Quiet” followed its British Society of Cinematographers (Bsc) win with a BAFTA victory, but wasn’t nominated at the upcoming guild awards being held March 5. If “Top Gun: Maverick” takes that, it should solidify Friend as this year’s top contender, but if it goes another direction, the race is on! Below are arguments for and against each of this year’s Best Cinematography nominees.

For much of this year’s awards conversation, The Banshees Of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All At Once have dominated in the major categories – but at the 2023 BAFTAs_ that cleaned up. Edward Berger’s film bagged seven awards on the night including Best Film – building up momentum throughout the show as it won multiple technical categories and major gongs over the course of the ceremony.
“For a German-language film, we’ve been blessed with so many nominations, and winning this is just incredible,” said producer Malte Grunert on stage while picking up Best Film. The film’s big wins also came freighted with the relevancy of its World War I story. Upon winning Adapted Screenplay, writer-director Berger noted that in five days time it will be a year since war began in Ukraine, and stated that: “There are no heroes in any war.”

The ninth annual Variety Artisans Awards celebrated the craftspeople behind Oscar-nominated films at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Monday.
A crowd of movie lovers, local Academy members and students from the nearby University of Santa Barbara came to see the artisans discuss their processes and talk about the biggest misconception people have about their crafts.
The full panel of honorees included “Rrr” songwriter M.M Keeravaani, composer Ryan Lott representing Son Lux who did the music for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “Elvis” costume designer Catherine Martin, “Babylon” production designer Florencia Martin, “Top Gun: Maverick” cinematographer Claudio Miranda, “The Whale” hairstyling and makeup artist Adrien Morot, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” editor Paul Rogers, “Avatar: The Way of Water” VFX supervisor Eric Saindon and “All Quiet on the Western Front” sound designer Markus Stemler.
“Avatar 2’s” Saindon discussed the difficulty of filming underwater, including using 70 cameras above the water line and 70 below.

Director Joseph Kosinski and Dp Claudio Miranda employed high-flying live-action cinematography to create the sense of realism in Top Gun: Maverick, but extensive visual effects work was still required to bring the acrobatic stunts to the screen — everything from adding digitally augmented environments and backgrounds to fully CG aircrafts — reveals production VFX supervisor Ryan Tudhope, who is the guest in a new episode of THR’s Behind the Screen . With 2,400 VFX shots in total, that work was vital to the movie, which is nominated for six Oscars including best picture and visual effects.
“Hopefully, most of those visual effects shots, if not all of them, are completely hidden,” Tudhope says, emphasizing that Kosinski aimed to shoot as much practically as possible, including filming the actors in the cockpits while in flight. “We really wanted the shot design of these sequences to be based on real aerial photography, because that gave us this organic plate photography,...

At six of the last 10 Oscars, Best Cinematography has gone hand-in-hand with Best Director: Claudio Miranda and Ang Lee for “Life of Pi” (2013); Emmanuel Lubezki and Alfonso Cuaron for “Gravity” (2014); Lubezki and Alejandro G. Inarritu for both “Birdman” (2015) and “The Revenant” (2016); Linus Sandgren and Damien Chazelle for “La La Land” (2017); and Cuaron doing double duty on “Roma” (2019). Will that trend hold true this year? (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Cinematography predictions.)
The academy usually regards award-winning cinematography as pretty pictures within an epic technical feat of filmmaking. While great lighting and framing are laudable on their own, having a movie that looks like it was difficult to shoot goes a long way to snagging an Oscar. Ryan Tudhope is ready to talk.
Now that the visual effects in “Top Gun: Maverick” have received an Oscar nomination and the team responsible for them is no longer embargoed from promoting their impressive work, VFX production supervisor Tudhope can finally reveal how his team achieved the essence of invisible effects but with a very substantial 2,400 CG shots.
As revealed during the VFX “bake-off” last month at the Academy Museum, artists from Method (now part of Framestore), Mpc, and Lola performed several tasks in support of the film’s practical ethos. They integrated VFX plates into the amazing aerial photography and stunt work featuring Tom Cruise flying in the cockpits of Navy fighter jets. Jets were re-skinned to match the real ones in the aerial photography. Navy pilots were comped out of the cockpits, where actors operated the six Sony Venices connected to Rialto Camera Extension System. The VFX also provided matte paintings,...

The writers revealed their roster the day after Oscar nominations were announced. And the film editors announced who made the cut on Feb. 1

Thanks to an unexpected selection of Oscar nominees for Best Cinematography on Tuesday — particularly, preliminary frontrunner Claudio Miranda missing the cut for “Top Gun: Maverick” — “Elvis” cinematographer Mandy Walker is suddenly the one beat, and now is the likeliest woman yet to break the category’s glass ceiling. She follows Ari Wegner (“The Power of the Dog”) last year and Rachel Morrison (“Mudbound”) in 2018, as only the third woman to be nominated by her branch. But neither Wegner nor Morrison were poised for a win like Walker is.

“Nope” was made in the grandest traditions of Hollywood. Jordan Peele, probably more so than any other studio director today, is a commercial filmmaker with a great deal to say about our world, but is able to successfully embed intellectual complexity into the sharp clarity of a well made, well told piece of entertainment that keeps the audience on the edge of its seats. “Nope” was commercially successful, well reviewed, regarded as a real piece of cinema made by a serious director, with A-list artisans and impeccable craft. It’s a film you’d expect to be embraced the by the Oscar craft branches.

The Oscar nominations on January 24 left us with plenty of questions. How did Best Supporting Actor nominee Judd Hirsch get in without his co-star Paul Dano for “The Fabelmans”? How did “Triangle of Sadness” penetrate categories in which it was a longshot but miss its likeliest bid for Dolly de Leon in Best Supporting Actress? The biggest head-scratcher, though, is Best Cinematography.

This year’s nominees are James Friend (“All Quiet on the Western Front”), Darius Khondji, Mandy Walker (“Elvis”), Roger Deakins (“Empire of Light”) and Florian Hoffmeister (“Tár”). Notably absent is “Top Gun: Maverick” frontrunner Claudio Miranda. It’s especially shocking considering the blockbuster action flick picked up a surprise bid for Best Adapted Screenplay in addition to projected noms for Best Picture, Best Editing, Best Song, Best Sound and Best Visual Effects, showing clear support for the film.
