Dene filmmaker Kelvin Redvers’ Indigenous thriller Cold Road has been picked up by levelFilm.
The debut feature comes from the Canadian filmmaker who made headlines when he was initially turned away from a red carpet screening of horrormeister David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future at the Cannes Film Festival for wearing handmade moccasins with the requisite tuxedo. After an intervention by the Telefilm Canada, the Canadian film financier, Redvers was allowed into the gala screening for Cronenberg’s film.
Cold Road, a genre thriller from IndigiFilm Media and starring Roseanne Supernault, is set on a frozen highway in the remote Canadian North where an Indigenous woman, Tracy, and her dog, Pretzel, are hunted by a stranger in a semi truck.
As Tracy realizes she’s being stalked, it’s too late to turn back, the temperature drops, night comes and she has no choice but to fight for her life.

Just over 30 years ago, director Mark Rappaport in his playful deconstructionist essay Rock Hudson’s Home Movies, cleverly mined the queer subtext in the midcentury Hollywood superstar’s screen work to speculate on his inner conflict as a gay public figure confined to the closet. Stephen Kijak’s more conventional, though also more heartfelt docu-portrait, Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed, takes a similarly cheeky approach to sniffing out coded behavior in a staggering array of clips that find just as much pathos as amusement.
Contextualizing Hudson’s regimented stardom against the relative freedom with which he lived his sexuality within a trusted circle, the HBO film paints him less as a victim of repressive times — though he certainly was that — than as a savvy product of the studio system who learned quickly how to play the game without losing his sense of self.
The tragic conclusion of his life...

To those who don’t obsessively watch TCM, or generally eschew movies made before 1980, Rock Hudson is little more than a factoid, best remembered for his sexuality than for the movies he made. And yet, while Hudson today is known as a gay man, it was something that he did his best to keep hidden and, as Stephen Kijak lays out towards the end of his HBO documentary, would have taken to the grave if he could have.
“Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed” is in the vein of other prominent documentaries aimed at telling the real story behind the Old Hollywood façade, including HBO’s most recent “The Last Movie Stars.” The revelations within the documentary’s 104-minute runtime aren’t revolutionary, but seek to give viewers an authentic look at a man whose life so often was swathed in artifice.

Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony will be a streaming event for the first time on the Netflix YouTube channel. One of the highlights each year is the special In Memoriam segment. It’s been a particularly rough year with over 100 deaths of prominent actors and actresses who were likely members of SAG/AFTRA. Show producers typically are able to include approximately 40-50 people in a tribute.
Among that group will certainly be Oscar winners Louise Fletcher, William Hurt and Irene Cara, plus nominees Angela Lansbury (a SAG life achievement recipient) and Melinda Dillon. Emmy champs Mary Alice, Kirstie Alley, Leslie Jordan, Ray Liotta, Stuart Margolin, Robert Morse and Barbara Walters.

Mark Miller, the prolific actor and screenwriter writer best known for Please Don’t Eat The Daisies and Guestward, Ho! has died. His daughter, actress Penelope Ann Miller, confirmed the news on Twitter. He was 97.
Miller portrayed college professor Jim Nash on Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, which ran from 1965-1967 and then in syndication. The NBC-MGM sitcom, which ran for 58 half-hour episodes, was loosely based on the theatrical film of the same name starring Doris Day and David Niven. The series did well initially, but its ratings took a hit in Season 2 when it was moved opposite The Jackie Gleason Show.
Miller had substantial runs on other big shows, most notably Desilu’s Guestward Ho! on ABC in 1960. He played one half of a New York City couple, the Hootens, who relocate to a dude ranch in New Mexico. Guestward Ho! ran for one season alongside The Donna Reed Show on Thursday evenings.

An open letter against the war in Ukraine has been signed by prominent Russian cinematographers, spearheaded by Fedor Lyass (“Hardcore Henry”).
The signatories include Roman Vasyanov, Mikhail Krichman, Pavel Kapinos (“Hardcore Henry”), Vladislav Opelyants and Pavel Fomintsev (“Unclenching the Fists”).
Since Russia’s attack on Ukraine began on Feb. 24, Russian filmmakers and animators have bravely rallied and spoken out against their government’s actions and have called upon the international community for support. In doing so, the signatories have put themselves at risk on both personal and professional levels. Alexander Rodnyansky, the two-time Oscar-nominated producer of “Leviathan,” “Loveless” told Variety last week that he felt “unbearably ashamed” and “incredibly, deeply sad” when news of the Russian invasion of Ukraine broke.

Josh Duhamel is not pleased with Netflix's handling of his latest series.
The streamer canceled Jupiter's Legacy after a single season earlier this week, less than a month after its launch on the platform.
In response, Duhamel shared a shirtless selfie in character as Sheldon Sampson.
"When you get dumped by @netflix and have to put yourself back out there.... #sexysantasummer," the star captioned his post. "What's up, @hulu?"
Duhamel plays Sheldon Sampson, an aging superhero on the series, which is based on Mark Miller and Frank Quitely's graphic novels.
Sheldon and his band of superheroes have outgrown the life in the series and are now ready to hand over the responsibilities to a fresh crop of superheroes.
The new crop included Sheldon’s son Brandon (Andrew Horton) and his daughter Chloe (Elena Kampouris), but it was evident that the kids are not exactly ready for such a big challenge.

After reading his book Our Lady of the Inferno, I was an immediate fan of writer Preston Fassel’s work, and I’m glad we’re getting yet another widely evocative story from his genre-obsessed mind this summer. Set to release in June is The Despicable Fantasies of Quentin Sergenov, a novella that mixes together horror and Attitude-Era wrestling with important (and timely) themes involving LGBT issues.
Daily Dead recently caught up with Fassel to discuss the long journey of writing The Despicable Fantasies of Quentin Sergenov, the inspirations behind his story, creating a sympathetic monster in his titular character, and more.
And to grab a copy of Fassel’s first novel Our Lady of the Inferno, head to Amazon Here. And to pre-order a copy of The Despicable Fantasies of Quentin Sergenov, click Here.

Josh Duhamel is a tough act to follow.
That's the main message to take from the full-length trailer for Netflix's Jupiter's Legacy.
Duhamel plays Sheldon Sampson, an aging superhero on the series, which is based on Mark Miller and Frank Quitely's graphic novels.
Sheldon and his band of superheroes have outgrown the life and are now ready to hand over the responsibilities to a fresh crop of superheroes.
If the trailer is any indication, it's not going to be an easy task.
The new crop includes Sheldon’s son Brandon (Andrew Horton) and his daughter Chloe (Elena Kampouris), but it's evident that the kids are not exactly ready for such a big challenge.
“No one can live up to the ideal,” Chloe says in the trailer. “Not even Dad.”
Sheldon worries, “they’re not even close to being ready," and just like that, we have a convincing hook for the series.

Hulu is adapting Clive Barker’s story collection, Books of Blood, as a movie, adding Star Trek director Brannon Braga and a stacked cast.
Books of Blood, the 1984-1985 six-volume short story collection that first brought maestro of macabre Clive Barker to prominence, is getting a feature film treatment. However, don’t expect to find said film at theaters, VOD, or, for that matter, even Netflix. – It’s coming to Hulu!
Brannon Braga, the veteran writer and producer of the Star Trek franchise, will be the driving force behind Hulu’s Books of Blood in a move that will certainly delight Trekkies… well, the ones who can appreciate hellishly twisted creatures and ambulatory flayed people. The project will be the feature directorial debut for Braga, who’s also serving as executive producer, set to co-write with Adam Simon, who worked with him on Wgn America series Salem.

We’ve already been told that Kingsman: The Great Game will be a prequel story set in 1910 during World War I, so I was already preparing myself for a different kind of Kingsman movie. But, director Matthew Vaughn recently talked about the film and he explained that the movie might be so different that fans of the franchise who watch it might say, “What the hell has he gone and done?”.
While talking to the ReelBlend podcast, Vaughn explained:
“When we came up with Kingsman sitting in that pub with Mark Miller seven years ago, it was very much a thing of two fanboys getting drunk, lamenting about what's happened to spy movies. And then the more I'd gotten involved in it, the more I just felt … was I planning a universe? No, but a universe sort of [developed]. It's been like the Big Bang, that all these other ideas are coming.

After The Secret Service became a surprise hit a few years back, the Kingman franchise looks set to stay as director Matthew Vaughn is spearheading a whole spy-fi universe. Following on from The Golden Circle, a prequel that explores the origins of the Kingsman organization is set to arrive next year, before Kingsman 3 then picks up and concludes the story of Harry Hart and Eggsy.
Reportedly called The Great Game, the Kingsman prequel takes place during the First World War and features an all-star cast including Ralph Fiennes, Liam Neeson and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Other than that, not too much has been officially revealed as yet, but while speaking on the ReelBlend podcast, Vaughn did have a few words to say on the topic.

Some interesting new details regarding Matt Reeves' The Batman have surfaced. These are only rumors for now, but they come from a source that has a decent track record of DC scoops.
Early one we were hearing that Reeves was looking at Jake Gyllenhaal to take on the role of Bruce Wayne. The report says that Jack Huston was also in the running around the same time. That means they were looking at Batman being in his mid-30s, but that has since changed.
The reason that these actors didn't work out and why Gyllenhaal opted to play Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home, was because Reeves is now looking for a much younger version of Batman. They want an actor to play a version of Bruce who’s 15 to 20 years younger than Ben Affleck's Batman and be around 25-years-old.

I have learned that Syfy is developing Nightbreed, a TV series based on Clive Barker’s short-story collection Cabal, which the prominent horror writer and visual artist previously adapted as the 1990 movie Nightbreed.
The project hails from Barker, writer Josh Stolberg, Morgan Creek Entertainment, whose feature division produced the Nightbreed movie, and Universal Cable Prods.

Will this group band together despite being hunted and persecuted by humans who find their “otherness” to be frightening?...

Rio De Janeiro — The first edition of Rio Creative Conference (Rio2C), an event originated from Rio Content Market, opened Tuesday April 3, gathering top local execs and talents in TV and film production, music and games industries through Sunday April 8.
Focused on industry members, the Rio Content Market went through seven editions, consolidating as the largest TV content market in Latin America. Rio2C has incorporated music and games and opened up to the public.
The event’s format is based on SXSW in Austin, Texas and the Web Summit in Lisbon, said Rio2C creator and CEO Rafael Lazarini.
Organizers stressed that the decision to upgrade the event, while Brazil and especially Rio de Janeiro face economic and political crisis, underscores the resilience of the local entertainment sector. More specifically, Brazil’s TV and film production industries have continued to grow during the three past years of recession.
