Has been nominated for Broadway's Tony Award three times, three years
in a row: as author of a Best Play nominee, in 1963 for "Tchin-Tchin"
and in 1964 for "Dylan;" and as Best Author (Musical) for "Ben Franklin
in Paris" in 1965.
After high school, he served in the Coast Guard, and studied drama at Tufts University.
His father Max was a theater manager and burlesque-show producer in Boston.
