If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pictures, including the 2021 winner “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Costume Design predictions.)
By the way, none of those films even competed for Best Picture. Indeed, only 20 of the most recent 73 Best Picture champs also won this award. Among these was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004). “Freud’s Last Session,” which stars Anthony Hopkins as Sigmund Freud and Matthew Goode as author C. S. Lewis, is in its final stages of filming in Ireland.
“Freud’s Last Session” is set on the eve of the Second World War, when at the end of his life, Freud (Hopkins) invites “The Chronicles of Narnia” author C.S. Lewis (Goode) to debate the existence of God. Interweaving past, present and fantasy, the film explores Freud’s unique relationship with his daughter Anna (Liv Lisa Fries), and Lewis’ unconventional relationship with his best friend’s mother.
Sony Pictures Classics last year snapped up all rights for North America, the Middle East, Turkey, India, Eastern Europe (excluding Cis), Asia and Latin America and worldwide airlines. WestEnd Films, which is selling the film, has also struck deals across Australia (Sharmill Films), Scandinavia (Scanbox), Italy (Adler), Benelux (Just Entertainment), Portugal (Nos), Israel (United King) and Greece...

“It was important to me that I was designing something for Martin, that I was taking his script and really helping to develop and create the characters that were on the page to give a three-dimensional edge to them,” declares costume designer Eimer Ní Mhaoldomhnaigh about designing the vibrant costumes for “The Banshees of Inisherin.” For our recent webchat she adds that she valued director Martin McDonagh “trusting me and not trying to second guess what I was doing or why I was doing something. He was always smiling and generous and he just gave me he free rein. I think it’s really important if you employ a creative team to employ them because you want them to be creative and because you want them to bring something to your production.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Martin McDonagh’s “The Banshees of Inisherin” tells a bittersweet tale of a longtime friendship turned sour, using the Irish Civil War both as a backdrop and a metaphor for its main theme of fading amities. It’s an allegory that supplied versatile costume designer Eimer Ní Mhaoldomhnaigh the perfect context to create a distinctive look, one that seamlessly marries accurate period details with the subtle liberties taken by Ní Mhaoldomhnaigh’s designs.
“It’s a small story set on an island off the coast of another island,” Ní Mhaoldomhnaigh told IndieWire. “That really gives you an opportunity.” The intimate nature of the film — centered on the psyche of the two dueling friends, naïve and decent Pádraic (Colin Farrell) and hard-nosed and pained Colm (Brendan Gleeson) — was her starting point, alongside McDonagh’s overarching vision. “Martin wanted it to be cinematic,” she said of the director’s wishes for the costumes.

What has to be the final trailer for Blake Lively’s revenge thriller The Rhythm Section has hit and, faithful to the book, it looks to be a kaleidoscope of outfit changes and ludicrous wigs. Eimer Ni Mhaoldomhnaigh is on costume design duties for this one.
Not to be all ‘we’ve read the book’ but, well, we have and, to be honest, it’s not that brilliant. However, the story zips along nicely and does features a compelling female lead. Being as Mark Burnell wrote The Rhythm Section in 1999, it’s astonishing that filmmakers have dragged their feet this long in getting a movie made. Perhaps one of the most interesting parts of the book is just how creepily close it comes to predicting the events of 9/11 in New York. To say any more would be spoiler territory, but if this trailer is anything to go by, the film,...

In Stacie Passon’s dynamic directorial debut “Concussion”, a housewife breaks free of her suburban bubble by taking on sex work in the city. With her sophomore feature “We Have Always Lived in the Castle,” adapted by Mark Kruger from the 1962 novel by Shirley Jackson, Passon offers a female protagonist who’s the antithesis of her previous one: Merricat Blackwood (Taissa Farmiga) can’t ensconce herself enough from the world outside.
(The heroine of “Concussion” spends most of the film renovating a Manhattan apartment, while Merricat builds her entire world within the walls of the family manse, meaning that someday, someone is going to craft a thesis with a title like “Inquire Within: Real Estate in the Films of Stacie Passon.”)

Period and fantasy always have an advantage over contemporary in the Oscar costume universe. The Costume Designers branch, more than many others, is often willing to go their own way (remember winner “Priscilla: Queen of the Desert”?) They may not care if “The Dressmaker,” say, or “Allied,” did badly at the box office, or if everyone else seems to love “La La Land.” They just look at the clothes. The 2016 Critics’ Choice Awards nominations are in and, somewhat unsurprisingly, Damien Chazelle’s old-timey musical La La Land has emerged as an early frontrunner.
It bagged 12 nominations in total, including nods in some of the more prestigious categories – Best Picture, Ryan Gosling for Best Actor, Emma Stone for Best Actress, Chazelle for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. It’s an impressive haul for the Oscar-tipped drama, and one that will surely strengthen its status as the one candidate to beat as the weeks wear on.
Elsewhere, other films to score big in the list of nominations include acclaimed sci-fi Arrival and Fences, Denzel Washington’s adaptation that sees him in the role of a former baseball star struggling to find meaning in 1950s Pittsburgh.
