Leonie Messer
- Additional Crew
Leonie Messer started out doing PR for Australian pop band Savage
Garden in the late 90s throughout promotion for the self-titled album
"Savage Garden" (1997 Sony). As promotion began for the group's second
album "Affirmation" (2000 Sony) she moved into the position of personal
assistant to Darren Hayes & Daniel Jones and travelled the world with
Darren.
During this time, she kept a humorous online diary for the Savage Garden website called "Leonie's Diary" to keep fans updated about Darren & Daniel. When Darren Hayes began his solo career, she became his manager with her new management company "Magnolia Music Management" out of San Francisco. She managed Darren throughout the recording and promotion for his first solo album "Spin" (2002 Sony) which had singles such as "Insatiable", "Strange Relationship" and "Crush (1980 Me)".
In July 2003 she gave birth to a boy named Calvin Michael (Michael is the name of Leonie's deceased father), and in December 2003 married her longtime boyfriend Robert. According to Darren, Leonie is his "best friend" and "literally saved [his] life" so it was fitting that the marriage ceremony was performed by Darren Hayes in his house in San Francisco (after he'd been granted temporary powers to do so by the local government). It was later celebrated with a party in Sydney, Australia (Darren & Leonie's home country) in January 2004. At this party for the 100 or so guests, Darren acoustically performed 5 cover songs for Rob & Leo.
With a new baby in tow, Leonie joined forces with Wendy Laister of "Magnus Entertainment" out of New York to co-manage Darren's career.
Darren Hayes' second solo album "The Tension and the Spark", co-managed with Wendy, was released in September 2004. The video for first single "Popular" was shot guerrilla style on the streets of downtown London, England in locations such as Oxford Street, Madam Tussauds, and the London Underground. Leonie's husband Robert Conley co-wrote many of the songs on "The Tension and the Spark" and co-produced the album with Darren.
Darren, Leonie & Robert stayed in England for the bulk of the promo for "Tension", including Darren's 2004 tour. They have continued to base themselves in London for the recording of Darren's upcoming third solo album (due to be released in early 2006).
Well known & loved by Savage Garden & Darren Hayes fans, Leonie Messer has in recent years stepped back from the spotlight. She no longer keeps "Leonie's Diary".
