Nearly four years have gone by since it was announced that Treehouse Pictures was developing a remake of the 1991 Christina Applegate cult classic Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead (watch it Here) that would be directed by Bille Woodruff (Beauty Shop and the Honey quadrilogy) from a screenplay by Chuck Hayward (Dear White People). All that was revealed about the project at the time was that it would be “a present-day retelling centered on a black family.” Then that’s the last we heard about it. Apparently it made its way through production while flying under the radar, though, because Film Ratings has revealed that the remake has already received its rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board… and it’s a surprising one. While the original film was rated PG-13, the remake has earned an R rating for “teen drug use, language and some sexual references.”

‘Roma,’ Alfonso Cuaron‘s nostalgic ode to his ’70s childhood in Mexico City, won over the 84-member Alliance of Women Film Journalists — including me. The stunning black-and-white Netflix release pocketed five Eda wins: Best Film, Best Cinematography, Best Non-English Film, Best Editing and Best Director. Coming in second were those cutthroat royals in “The Favourite” with four wins, including Olivia Colman as Best Actress.

There are the general Best of Awards, Female Focus Awards and Eda Special Mention Awards whose nominees are picked by those Awfj members who send in a nominating ballot. There is room for the good, including Viola Davis of “Widows” receiving the “Actress Defying Age and Ageism Award,” and the bad, as in Jennifer Lawrence of “Red Sparrow,” who...

Which film ruled over the field of contenders? That would be that royal bitch stitch,“The Favourite,” with 11 nods, including Best Film as well as director, original screenplay, actress, two supporting actresses, ensemble, cinematography and editing. Three other titles had the second-most nominations with eight apiece: “Leave No Trace,” “Roma” and “Vice.” Meanwhile, “BlackKklansman,” “Black Panther” and “If Beale Street Could Talk” came in third with five spots each.

The Alliance of Women Film Journalists has announced the nominees for their eleventh annual Awfj Eda Awards. This year, Awfj presents Eda Awards in 25 categories, divided into three sections: the standard “Best Of” section, the Female Focus awards, and the irreverent Eda Special Mention awards — including Actress Most in Need of a New Agent and the Awfj Hall of Shame Award. Standout nominees this year include “Lady Bird,” “I, Tonya,” “Get Out,” “Girls Trip,” “Mudbound,” and “Call Me by Your Name.”
This year’s nomination is a vibrant mix of lauded films and performances, and some of the Awfj’s more off-beat notations, like that Hall of Shame Award (this year, bestowed on “Darren Aronofsky and all associated with ‘mother!,'” “Louis Ck and all associated with ‘I Love You, Daddy,'” and “Showbiz Sexual Tormentors: Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Brett Ratner, et al.” Other signature Eda Awards include Most...

A Worthy Companion takes a fresh and new perspective that explores the complexity and humanity within the predator, victim relationship. This film questions how we perpetuate manipulative power dynamics between adult and child through the inner struggle of our female protagonists.

The Alliance of Women Film Journalists has announced the nominees for their 2015 Eda Awards recognizing the amazing work done by and about women -- both in front and behind the camera. According to their site, "the EDAs are named in honor of Awfj founder Jennifer Merin.s mother, Eda Reiss Merin, a stage, film and television actress whose career spanned more than 60 years. A dedicated foot soldier in the industry, Eda was one of the founders of AFTRA and a long-standing Member of AMPAS."
Todd Haynes' "Carol" led the pack with nine nominations, followed by "Mad Max: Fury Road" with six, "Room" and "Spotlight" with five each, and "The Martian" with four.
I wish I can vote for the Eda Awards because their Special Mention Awards are just too darn fun with categories like "Best Nudity," and "Actress Most In Need of a New Agent!"

Blame The Karate Kid. Remakes of 1980/1990s nostalgia-driven movies were already a hot property in Hollywood but thanks to Jaden Smith and his kung fu powers hitting it big at the box office (and, to a lesser degree, The A-Team), the hunger for possible titles to throw onto the retread conveyer belt is only going to grow. And while the movie was likely being targeted even before this weekend’s results, you can add Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead to the list of films now being retooled. As Pajiba’s source reports, the 1991 comedy, directed by Stephen Herek, saw the Crandell family of three kids left alone with an elderly babysitter when their mother decides to head off on a three-month holiday without her chaotic clan.Initially, the kids, led by eldest Sue Ellen (Christina Applegate) see this as an opportunity to do whatever they like. But...
