Despite honourable intentions, this film addressing the Stalin-inflicted 1932-33 genocide in Ukraine is at times embarrassingly bad
At least Bitter Harvest’s release date is relatively timely, given the recent focus in the news on Russia’s brutally aggressive, expansive ambitions. Putin may be accused of killing, but he’s got nothing on Joseph Stalin who instigated the genocide via famine of some 10 million Ukrainians in 1932-33, an atrocity now known at the Holodomor. This drama by director/co-writer George Mendeluk is one of the very few western films to address the subject, and while one may applaud the intention, the execution is markedly uneven.
Max Irons stars as Yuri, a Cossack’s son with dreamy eyes and notable daddy issues who deeply loves feisty local beauty Natalka (Samantha Barks). Not long after their marriage, Stalin (incarnated by Gary Oliver in cutaway scenes, practically twiddling his bushy, fake moustache) comes...

Noble intentions are defeated by inept execution in George Mendeluk’s historical drama concerning the Holdomor, the forced famine imposed by Stalin on the Ukrainian people that resulted in the deaths of millions. Personalizing the events through the tale of a pair of star-crossed lovers, Bitter Harvest might be described as Dr. Zhivago-lite, although it really doesn’t deserved to be mentioned in the same breath as David Lean’s classic. This is the sort of bad film that can only come about as the result of misguided ambitions.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
Presidents' Day weekend was an interesting one at the box office, and as with most holiday weekends, it was particularly difficult to figure out how things might fare, other than The Lego Batman Movie, which remained at #1 with almost $45 million over the four-day weekend. Fifty Shades Darker followed with $21.3 million, about a 50% drop. Last week, I thought that the Ice Cub comedy Fist Fight would beat The Great Wall, although it seemed like it could be a close race. Nope. Matt Damon’s action epic came in third place with $21.6 million, which is a couple million more than my original prediction, but The Fist Fight fell short of my prediction by almost $10 million, grossing $14.5 million in its first four days.

The Holodomor was a man-made famine that existed in Ukraine in 1932, and lasted over a year. In that time up to seven million people were murdered, dying from starvation. Yet how much do you know about this barbaric catastrophe, if at all? It’s somehow managed to be mostly untold in cinema, nor at schools for that matter, and so much lies on the shoulders of George Mendeluk, in one of the very first English language productions to cast an eye over this horrific set of events. Yet after watching this underwhelming production, it’s hard not to wish for another version.
Yuri (Max Irons) is raised in a respectable family, son of Yaroslav (Barry Pepper) and grandson of the celebrated war hero Ivan (Terence Stamp), and he falls for childhood friend Natalka (Samantha Barks), wanting nothing more than to marry the love of his life, and...

At the beginning of December we were delighted to debut the first poster for George Mendeluk’s Bitter Harvest. Today we have a fine follow up for you, the first look at the stirring first trailer for the film. Co-written by Mendeluk with Richard Bachynsky-Hoover from on his original story, the film stars Max Irons, Samantha Barks, Barry Pepper, Tamer Hassan and Terence Stamp.
The new trailer portrays the awful reality of Stalin’s horrific collectivisation during the 1930s, otherwise known Holodomor (a translation of the Ukrainian phrase ‘execution by hunger’). The central love story between Max Irons and Samantha Barks gives an emotional grounding to the unthinkable torment endured during that period. The two sides are drawn well in the trailer, and Mendeluk’s direction looks to capture the terror and passion so important to telling this story.

"How many lives is this war worth?!" Roadside Attractions has debuted an official trailer for a sweeping historical drama titled Bitter Harvest, set during "The Holodomor" in Ukraine in between the first and second World War. The "Holodomor" was a genocidal famine engineered by Joseph Stalin, as an effort to stop the Ukrainian independence movement, resulting in the deaths of millions of people. The film tells the story of a romance between a young Ukrainian couple torn apart by the starvation. Max Irons stars, along with Samantha Barks as his lover, also including Terence Stamp, Barry Pepper, Richard Brake, Aneurin Barnard, Tom Austen, Tamer Hassan and Lucy Brown. This looks okay, but it's hard to tell with this trailer. There's too much going on and the director isn't that impressive, it might not be any good. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for George Mendeluk's Bitter Harvest, originally from...

The Bitter Ash
A rather precious thing happened in Montreal in the mid 1970s. Canadian cinema had been dominated by the National Film Board since its formation in 1940, and the generally-perceived character of Canadian film was all educational documentary, and not a lot of fun. Directors such as Claude Jutra, Don Owen, and Gilles Groulx struck off on their own to make the first Canadian new wave fiction films (A tout prendre [1963], Nobody Waved Goodbye, and Le chat dans le sac [both 1964] respectively), on the back of independents like Sydney J. Furie’s groundbreaking A Dangerous Age (1959) and Larry Kent’s student feature The Bitter Ash (1963), but for all their youthful, semi-bohemian trappings, these were still quite po-faced affairs. Then came the “genial loser” films of the 70s, led by Owen’s Goin’ Down The Road (1970), and others such as The Rowdyman (Peter Carter, 1972) and Paperback Hero (Peter Pearson, 1973), for the...

Financier/executive producer James M. Vernon has an unusual problem in the Australian film industry: he says he has more money to invest than there are viable projects.
Vernon.s Media Funds Management (Mfm) has co-financed a raft of films including Mark Lamprell.s Goddess, Fred Schepisi.s The Eye of the Storm, Simon Wincer.s The Cup, Stephan Elliott.s A Few Best Men and the soon-to-be-released Brian Trenchard-Smith-directed action thriller Absolute Deception.
Among the Mfm co-funded films in post-production are the Spierig brothers. supernatural thriller Predestination, Russell Scott.s 3D IMAX documentary Hidden Universe and Geoff Davis. WW1 drama The Stolen.

Distribution company Odyssey Media looks to be getting in on the b-movie market in a big way with four Syfy-ish flicks that showcase snow sharks, volcanic dragons, crimefighting teen vampires, and Battle Royale at the bottom of a sinkhole.
Avalanche Sharks – After an horrific avalanche, the staff members at Twin Pines Ski Resort start to receive reports of missing people and creatures that move beneath the snow. As the body count piles up, the management tries to cover up the situation, which leads to disaster on their busiest day of the year: Bikini Snow Day.
This sequel to last year’s Sand Sharks was also supposed to star Brooke Hogan, but she had to back out due to a scheduling conflict. Instead Kate Nauta, Erika Jordan, and Emily Addison will have to serve as attractive snow shark bait in this frozen nature gone amok flick from Scott Wheeler, director of...

The Terror Experiment was recently released on Blu-ray/DVD, and I had a chance to talk to director George Mendeluk and his son Alexander, who worked together on this film. Continue reading to learn more about the challenges of making a low-budget zombie movie, their inspirations, and their next project.
Thank you for taking the time to talk with Daily Dead. How did this project come about and what made you interested in telling a zombie story with so many already available?
George: The project came to us, because I was setting up another movie and an investor shied away from it. When this came up, I was intrigued as a director to take on the challenge of working on a limited one-set situation and pull it off. The claustrophobia and building became a challenge to work with. I hope it wasn’t obvious, but the building was only...

For his new flick The Terror Experiment, director George Mendeluk relied on his son Alexander’s horror movie sensibilities as well as the terrifying true events of 9/11 for inspiration, and Dread Central recently had the opportunity to chat with them both.
Alexander not only co-stars in the flick but also ran second unit on the production, which centers on a group of survivors that must make it out of a government building alive after a deadly virus is unleashed, causing anyone exposed to the contaminant to turn into a violent zombie.
Read on for our interview with the Mendeluks below, and look for more on The Terror Experiment soon!
Dread Central: Let’s start with you, George- can you talk a bit about where the story inspiration for The Terror Experiment came from?

Writers of The Terror Experiment, you are not allowed to quote Henry David Thoreau in a movie that has dialogue that is this bad and expect us to take you seriously. I’ve seen this movie passed around, advertised, trailered and I have one conclusion. Someone really loved their 80′s actors and wanted to see them star in a “bad ass” zombie, anti-establishment picture. The Terror Experiment from Anchor Bay was not an attempt to show how a terrorist plot might be used to show the darker side of governmental preparedness. It was meant to scare audiences away from movies.
Synopsis:
A terrorist sets off an explosion that rocks the Federal Building and unleashes a toxic gas throughout the ventilation system. His purpose: to expose the Government’s secret biological warfare weapon, a deadly virus that instantly attacks a person’s adrenal system, causing them to become inhumanly aggressive, with...

*full disclosure: a Blu-Ray screener of this film was provided by Anchor Bay Entertainment.
Director: George Mendeluk.
Writer: D. Todd Deeken.
The Terror Experiment from Anchor Bay Entertainment is not terrifying at all. This is a horror film without a sharp edge. The film feels dull and the characters in The Terror Experiment seem dull as well. With a little cursory digging, the reason for this lackluster showing becomes apparent. Director George Mendeluk's background is in television and his made for television style of directing does not transition well to a straight-to-dvd release. The music is generic, the story is generic and even buildings are not given names. Instead, they get an anonymous title like "Federal Building." All of these elements and many more make The Terror Experiment a candidate for Worst Film of 2012 on 28Dla.
This film does not really deserve fleshing out as none of the ideas...

Premiering at the American Film Market is a new film called The Terror Experiment, which is reported to be a Quarantine-esque thriller about "psychotic rage-aholics." So, pretty much zombies without the "rising from the grave" part? The cast looks pretty decent: C. Thomas Howell (The Hitcher), Jason London (The Prophecy: Forsaken), Judd Nelson (The Breakfast Club, Dark Asylum), Robert Carradine (Escape from L.A.) and Lochlyn Munro (Scary Movie). George Mendeluk (Relic Hunter) directs. After the jump, check out the official synopsis. It was about ten days ago that I reported on a new rage zombie flick with the uber generic title Infected I had stumbled upon a listing for on the American Film Market. A sales agent then sent word that the movie had undergone a name change for the better to The Terror Experiment. Now I can bring you more details on the plot and new sales art for this Quarantine-esque chiller.
C. Thomas Howell, Judd Nelson, Jason London, Robert Carradine, and Lochlyn Monroe star in this thriller from director George Mendeluk about people trapped in an office high rise with psychotic rage-a-holics. The movie will be premiering at Afm in the coming week and will almost certainly be infecting DVD shelves sometime next year. A trailer should be going online soon. In the meantime, here's a more detailed plot synopsis and new artwork reflecting the film's title change to The Terror Experiment.

There was a time in the 1980's when C. Thomas Howell and Judd Nelson were amongst the hottest group of young actors of their time, collectively known as "The Brat Pack". Now they're reuniting for a low budget rage virus flick unoriginally titled Infected. Take a look at your future, cast of Twilight.
Directed by George Mendeluk and starring C. Thomas Howell, Judd Nelson, Jason London, Robert Carradine, and Lochlyn Monroe, this survival horror flick sounds like it's a cinema-verite beat away from being a knock-off of Quarantine.
When a virus is released in the Federal Building, causing employees to instantly become aggressive and bloodthirsty, a group of the uninfected must band together and fight to get out with their lives.

Jeremy London and Dina Meyer are each starring in an original movie in production at Sci Fi Channel, which also has greenlighted an international spinoff of its reality series Ghost Hunters.
London (7th Heaven), Stefanie von Pfetten (Dragon Boys) and Lexa Doig (Stargate SG-1) are starring in Ba'al, about a rogue Smithsonian archaeologist, dying of cancer, who will stop at nothing to retrieve the ancient amulets of the storm god Ba'al, which could cure him or make him a god.
The film is being directed by Paul Ziller (Swarmed) and produced by CineTel Films.
Meanwhile, Riddles of the Sphinx stars Meyer (the "Saw" franchise) and Lochlyn Munro (Deck the Halls) in a story about a father and daughter who find themselves in a series of battles of mind and body with the deadly Sphinx as they attempt to decode seven riddles in an effort to save humankind.
The movie is being directed by George Mendeluk (Her Fatal Flaw) and produced by Plinyminor.
Both movies are shooting in and around Vancouver and will air as part of Sci Fi's Saturday night lineup late next year.
