After World War II, the Writers Guild of America created the Robert
Meltzer Award, originally meant to honour writers who had been killed
in the war. The award was withdrawn in 1951 when Meltzer was
blacklisted, but was re-established in 1991 "in recognition of a
singular act of courage in defense of freedom of expression and the
rights of the writer."
