- Cinematographer
Bob Mehnert has been a director/cinematographer professionally since
1968.
He primarily works as a second unit and aerial unit director/cinematographer on feature films and as a director/cinematographer on television commercials. A versatile film maker, Bob has shot everything from food to baseball players to the Navy's Blue Angels.
Automotive clients include; BMW, Lexus, Saab, Dodge, GMC and Chevy Trucks, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, and Subaru. Airlines include Ansett Australia, British Air, National Airlines, Gulf Air, Alaska Airlines and British West Indian Airways. Bob also did a large number of advertising and public relations films for Lockheed Corporation.
His interest in aerial and specialized cinematography developed while doing a series of airline commercials and military air power films in the mid 1980s. Since that time, he has shot with most every aerial and remote camera system currently in use; SpaceCam, Gyron FS, WesCam (gyro mounts for helicopter, camera car, and boat use,) and VectorVision (used on board a specially equipped LearJet) and has brought that technology into the automotive cinematography area as well as to the giant screen IMAX format. Bob has shot IMAX format on Everest, Spirit of America, American Road, Thrill Ride, and Birds of Prey (Summer 2004 release.)
Another facet of Bob's cinema is music. Being a music lover he gravitated towards early music video and did a number of programs that included jazz musicians at the Watts Jazz Festival in the mid-70s. More recently he shot the Phil Collins "You'll Be In My Heart" piece for Walt Disney's Tarzan (1999), "Woody's Round Up" for Disney's Toy Story 2 (1999), and "Dancing in the Streets" for Disney's Recess (1997). "The Sum of All Fears" on which Bob was aerial D.P. is in current release.
No stranger to computer-generated imagery, Bob used CGI in a series of promotional films for Lockheed in the mid-1980s and likes to incorporate computer visual effects ranging from subtle to outrageous in current TV advertising, Bob completed a series of commercials for Apple Computers using a combination of materials shot on both film and 24p High Definition Television. The spots which included live action, miniatures, and CGI were shot entirely with the Nettmann-Kenworthy Snorkel System. He has also been shooting the entire Mitsubishi 2003 line on digital video with surprisingly film-like results.
Bob Mehnert is a member of I.A.T.S.E. Local 600 as a director of photography. Also a member of the Society of Operating Cameramen and a senior faculty member at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.
