On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Can You Spoil Something This Surreal?
Few experiences surpass stumbling onto a jaw-dropping moment in film totally unspoiled. The big twist in “One Cut of the Dead.” The Fern Mayo reveal in “Jawbreaker.” Top to bottom, every second of “Titane.” These are scenes across varying genres and eras that live in my bones as electric moments I didn’t expect to see, but that reminded me why I whole-heartedly love the movies when I did. Hence, this column’s spoiler-free/spoiler-filled bifurcation.

Tacoma Fd is one of the funniest and wackiest workplace comedies. The truTV series follows a crew of firefighters in one of the rainiest cities in America. Exclusive: Actors Mark McKinney and Daniel Ings have signed on to star in the comedy road movie A Rush of Blood.
We understand British filmmaker Tristan Shepherd will direct the pic from a screenplay he also wrote. Billed as a “comedy, thriller, road trip movie,” the plot follows a British-Canadian couple, who get their last shot at fulfilling their professional ambitions — and any hope of reinvigorating their marriage — when their independent film is selected for Sundance. However, when they accept a ride to Park City with Reegan, a young, self-styled film reporter, who becomes increasingly maniacal as the journey unfolds, their dream slowly turns into a nightmare – more frightening than any film plot they could have ever devised. McKinney will play a character named Larry, while Ings will suit up as a character named Brian.

Saturday Night Live is the show everyone thinks of when they think about sketch comedy. Though not the first and certainly not the last, SNL has been on NBC live since 1975. So it has dominated a lot of pop culture real estate. If you are looking for more sketch comedy with a different point of view, or just a different cast, here are 12 other options.

The Second City comedy troupe got into the sketch comedy TV business one year after SNL. Their premise was that the Second City Television network would air different sketches. Comedy legends John Candy, Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Andrea Martin, Martin Short and more starred in the show’s five seasons.

Keith Johnstone, a pioneer in improvisation who trained a generation of actors and comedians in impromptu performance and creativity, on and off the stage, has died. He was 90.
Johnstone died at Rockyview Hospital in Calgary on Saturday, according to his personal website, with no cause of death specified. The creator of Theatresports and co-founder of The Loose Moose Theatre Company was born in Devon, England, on Feb. 21, 1933.
Johnstone trained at the Royal Court Theatre in London and was a teacher at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. According to Theresa Robbins Dudeck, co-director of the docu-series On Keith: Artists Speak on Johnstone and Impro, Johnstone developed his Impro System, or his improvisation theories, while at the Royal Court Theatre over 10 years to 1966. 2022 has been an extraordinary year for television. The pandemic forced many shows down to shorter schedules or Zoom-based episodes in 2020, which had lasting effects well into 2021, but this year feels almost like a roaring television comeback. There were so many great shows this year that I genuinely had a difficult time narrowing the list down to just 20 entries. We have been blessed with a wealth of excellent entertainment from regular networks, cable, and streaming, and now it's time to celebrate (and rank) the best of the best.
This has been an especially great year for genre TV, with an abundance of extraordinary new science fiction, fantasy, and horror shows, plus terrific new seasons from returning favorites like "What We Do in the Shadows" and "The Boys." There were so many good shows that I had to leave out some greats, like "Star Trek: Lower Decks," "Mythic Quest," and "The White Lotus.

The Series: "Superstore"
Where You Can Stream It: Peacock
The Pitch: The elevator pitch for NBC's sitcom "Superstore" is simple: at a Walmart-like big box store in Missouri, a group of employees work, squabble, dream, goof off, fall in love, and fight for their rights. But across its six seasons, the series made by Justin Spitzer never stopped getting funnier, or more romantic, or bolder in its portrayal of the class struggle in America. By the time it bowed out gracefully last year, "Superstore" had become one of the best workplace sitcoms of the 21st century so far, despite never entering the zeitgeist as fully as comparable favorites like "The Office" and "Parks and Recreation."

With Christmas in full swing on the Hallmark networks, beautiful holiday movies are coming in hot and heavy.
Long Lost Christmas stars Taylor Cole and Benjamin Ayres in a story reminding us that this Christmas could be our last with anyone we love.
We had the opportunity to catch up with Ben to talk about the movie and a whole lot more.
You don't have to be watching Hallmark to get your fill of Benjamin Ayres. This year alone, he's been in several Hallmark productions, Family Law on The CW, The Bad Seed Returns on Lifetime, and The Kids in the Hall.
Ben says that while Hallmark operates in the vein of old Hollywood's studio system, for other roles, he's going through the audition process.
With Hallmark, "You just get a phone call, and you're matched up with somebody else. The first inquiry is 'Who wrote it?' 'Who's starring in it?...

As Lorne Michaels tells it, Saturday Night Live’s most significant cast shakeup in a generation is a product of the pandemic.
In interviews after the Emmy Awards and with The New York Times, Michaels noted that in normal times, the likes of Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant and Pete Davidson might have left SNL in 2020 or 2021 to pursue other work.
“The pandemic had put us in this position where no one could really leave because there were no jobs,” Michaels told the Times, echoing his post-Emmys comments that there “was no place to go” for long-serving cast members who might otherwise have left beforehand.
Regardless of the cause, Saturday’s 48th season opener will be the first show after one of the largest cast shake-ups in its history. The show did a near-total overhaul prior to the 1985-86 season, and a similar one...

Steve Carell has taken on plenty of memorable roles in his life, from the depressed scholar Frank in "Little Miss Sunshine" to the sexually frustrated Andy in "The 40-year old Virgin" to sweet supervillain Gru in "Despicable Me." Yet no matter how many great performances he puts in, he'll always be known first and foremost to many people as Michael Scott from "The Office." The tactless, cringe-inducing, hilarious boss of Dunder Mifflin Paper Company is the sun around which all the show's workplace chaos revolves.
"The Office" wouldn't have succeeded without Carell's faux-sly glances to camera, perfectly uncomfortable line deliveries, and contagious outbursts of laughter. Yet as with so many great roles, it almost went to someone else. In fact, lots of familiar names were considered for the role.

Multiple documentary Emmy contenders this season turn their focus on the people who have made us laugh — and the complicated legacies of their place in comedy history. Four doc titles examine the careers and controversies of stand-ups George Carlin and Bill Cosby, Canadian sketch troupe the Kids in the Hall and I Love Lucy stars Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. Here’s what The Hollywood Reporter’s critics had to say about each.
George Carlin’s American Dream (HBO)
George Carlin both transcended and changed the parameters of his chosen profession. It’s been nearly 14 years since Carlin died, but based on his continued social media ubiquity, his words have lived on and remained crazily specific, as if every unanticipatable catastrophe of human culture was somehow anticipated by only one man. On any given day, whether the trending topic relates to reproductive rights...

It starts with one of them casually saying, “Write what you know” — it may be Mark McKinney, slightly leaning back in his chair and staring at the ceiling, or it might be Bruce McCulloch, who’s wandering around the conference room, checking his phone as it charges and idly munching on a pastry. Whoever said it first, it’s definitely Kevin McDonald who quickly jumps in and, as if on cue, immediately chants, “Write what you know!” He says it again, at which point Dave Foley joins in as well.

Age certainly hasn’t mellowed the Kids in the Hall. The freewheeling Canadian comedy geniuses are as fearless and shameless as ever in the eight new episodes of their self-titled sketch comedy series. Why did it take more than a quarter-century to get a sixth season of The Kids in the Hall? “We never really thought that we could do sketch comedy again because we thought, ‘How could we improve? We can’t really touch what we’ve done,’” says Scott Thompson, whose groundbreaking gay raconteur Buddy Cole is among several memorable characters making a return appearance. But as Thompson, Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald and Mark McKinney took their classic material on the road, they began writing new sketches. Says McKinney, who recently starred on the sitcom Superstore, “We were going, ‘God, it would be fun to put this up,’ and then suddenly there was a door to walk through with Amazon Canada.

Though an enormous number of beloved, bygone TV shows have been revived for the streaming era, there isn’t a whole lot of precedent for this kind of revival in the area of sketch comedy. It makes sense: There are fewer hit sketch comedy shows than straight sitcoms or dramas, and many of the most famous lineups would now be incomplete (like “Sctv” or “Monty Python’s Flying Circus”), or have featured too many incarnations to reunite properly (like the many casts of “Saturday Night Live”).
There’s also the matter of how sketch comedy is often fueled by youthful vitality. “The Carol Burnett Show,” for example, was a huge 11-season hit in the ’60s and ’70s, but a 1991 revival quickly floundered despite arriving just 13 years after its original finale—about the same amount of time that’s elapsed since Canadian comedy troupe the Kids in the Hall last appeared on television.

For a generation of comedy nerds, The Kids in the Hall are spoken of in the reverent tones usually reserved for the original cast of Saturday Night Live, Mr. Show’s Bob and David, or Key and Peele. The Canadian comedy troupe, who headlined one of the most influential and groundbreaking sketch shows of all time, are back for a revival of their eponymous series on Amazon Prime beginning May 13, 2022. On May 20th, Amazon will also drop the documentary, The Kids in the Hall: Comedy Punks.
Directed by Reg Harkema (Super Duper Alice Cooper), the doc screened at the SXSW festival last month in a 95-minute cut, but Amazon has since broken it up into two parts. While that’s unnecessary, it does provide a clean arc for each installment: part one chronicles the formation of the group in Toronto’s punk scene through the first season of their CBC/HBO show,...

Viewers before them had first-generation “Saturday Night Live” and “Sctv.” But five Canadian lads turned out to be “kind of the only comedy group that reflected Gen X,” as fan Fred Armisen puts it in “The Kids in the Hall: Comedy Punks.” Reg Harkema’s documentary is a breezy, worthy overview of a collective career now approaching its 40th anniversary.
While best enjoyed by the already converted, it provides enough showbiz insight and interpersonal drama to entertain newbies. It will provide both camps with an appetizer for the Kids’ limited-run reboot of their original sketch series, which new episodes (featuring an array of name guest stars) launch May 13 on Amazon Prime, followed by this doc a week later (on May 20).
While all in their early twenties, Mark McKinney and Bruce McCulloch met in 1981 via a Calgary comedy-improv group, as did Dave Foley and Kevin McDonald in Toronto the next year.

It’s not as well known as it was in Canada, but during the ’80s and ’90s, “The Kids In The Hall” was one of the most beloved sketch comedies up North, the heir apparent of Sctv. Consisting of comedians Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson, “The Kids In The Hall” aired for five seasons from 1988 to 1995, then there was the 1996 movie, “Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy.” But besides reunion tours, one-offs, and the 2010 “Death Comes to Town” mini-series, that was basically the extent of the ‘Kids.’ Members found success in Hollywood and scattered around to different projects (Dave Foley was notably the first breakout star who had a long run on the American sitcom “NewsRadio”).

Comedy sketch show The Kids in the Hall is returning after nearly three decades. The Canadian series, starring Dave Foley, Kevin McDonald, Bruce McCulloch, Scott Thompson, and Mark McKinney, originally ran from 1988 to 1995 and has been resurrected by Prime Video. And in the trailer, the group literally emerges from a grave. “The original Emmy-nominated The Kids in the Hall was an alternative comedy sensation that developed a die-hard fanbase while influencing countless comedians and performers,” Prime Video said in a statement. “The new season marks the return of The Kids, with eight new episodes featuring all-new sketches from the beloved comedy troupe.” “What an amazing gift to put on our old wigs, and even get some new ones…,” the Kids in the Hall themselves added. The Kids in the Hall premieres May 13 on Prime Video and will launch in Canada and more than 240 other countries and territories worldwide. Check out...

It's been almost 30 years since "The Kids In The Hall" TV series went off the air and Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson went off to fulfill solo careers. They may not be kids anymore, but the Canadian kings of sketch comedy are back. In the years following the end of their eponymous show, they put out the film "Brain Candy," have reunited a handful of times for tours and comedy festivals, and in 2010 released the eight-part miniseries, "Death Comes to Town." But now, The Kids are back for a full-blown, eight-episode revival season...

After nearly 30 years, a beloved Canadian sketch comedy institution is coming back to TV next month. “The Kids in the Hall,” a new streaming revival of the classic sketch comedy show of the same name, will premiere on Prime Video May 13.
The news was accompanied by a teaser trailer that shows the members of “The Kids in the Hall” sketch group –– Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney and Scott Thompson –– waking up in a grave marked “The Kids in the Hall TV Show,” along with 1989 to 1995, the dates the original series aired on CBC and HBO. The teaser also features glimpses at sketches in the upcoming season, including an extended meta bit in which two of the group members play executives in charge of a “Kids in the Hall” reboot.

The “Kids in the Hall” cast — Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney and Scott Thompson — are unearthed from their burial plot and set loose on the world once again in the first trailer for the Prime Video revival of the beloved sketch comedy. The reboot will debut on May 13, the streamer announced on Wednesday at its Prime Video Presents Canada showcase event in Toronto.
Things are crushed from a distance, tasteless jokes are made and Queen Elizabeth spoofed in the trailer, which sees the comedians skeptical of their new streaming network, Amazon.
The upcoming season will feature eight episodes with all-new sketches and guest stars including Pete Davidson, Mark Hamill, Catherine O’Hara, Kenan Thompson, Will Forte, Paul Bellini, Brandon Ash-Mohammed, Catherine Reitman, Samantha Bee, Fred Armisen, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Jay Baruchel, Eddie Izzard, Tracee Ellis Ross and Colin Mochrie.
The original Emmy-nominated sketch show premiered in 1989 and become a cult comedy hit.

“It was like that kiss goodnight,” declares Lauren Ash about the emotional finale of NBC’s sixth and final season of “Superstore.” For our recent webchat, she addds, “It was such a beautiful ending. Getting to see all the characters at that barbecue, I thought was really sweet. Getting to see Dina and Garrett happier than we’ve ever seen them getting to see little bits of Amy and Jonah, so we know they’re together, we know that they’re married, they had a honeymoon, they had another child. I can’t watch it without crying and I’ve watched it probably 30 times. I can’t even really talk about it without crying!” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

After six seasons and 113 episodes, “Superstore” wrapped things up with a well-received finale on March 25. The episode ended with Cloud 9 Superstore #1217 shutting its doors and turning into a warehouse fulfillment center for parent company Zephra, and the team from the Ozark Highlands store splitting up.
But even as the show — and the store — closed up, the series wrapped up storylines and left nearly everyone in a hopeful place. Even Carol was invited to their alumni picnic, even though she’s Carol.
Before taping the finale, the cast gathered on Zoom for their final table read, and Variety has the exclusive video of that moment. The table read, which took place on February 19, was for Episode 615, “All Sales Final,” which aired on March 25.
Creator/executive producer Justin Spitzer introduces the read, along with showrunners/executive producers Gabe Miller and Jonathan Green. Spitzer, Miller and Green wrote the finale, which was directed by Ruben Fleischer.

Just days after Cloud 9 shut its doors for good, Superstore couple Bo & Cheyenne’s journey has also come to an end at NBC.
The spinoff from co-executive producers Bridget Kyle and Vicky Luu, which Deadline learned about exclusively in December, is not moving forward with the network. The spinoff would have followed Nichole Sakura’s Cheyenne and her beaux, Bo played by Johnny Pemberton.
“Unfortunately, yesterday NBC notified us that they’re not going forward with the ‘Superstore’ spinoff,” Kyle told Cleveland.com, which broke the news on Friday. “So, it will just have to live on in our hearts and on my hard drive.”
Creator Justin Spitzer told Deadline ahead of the Superstore finale that the spinoff would focus more on the couple’s home life with their child Harmonica, as opposed to Cheyenne’s time at Cloud 9 or Sturgis & Sons, the hardware shop she ends up...

It felt surreal to see “Superstore” wind down to its final episodes. Despite running six full seasons at a time when sitcoms more and more rarely get the chance, “Superstore” never had a dip in quality that signaled its natural end. It was consistently, impressively funny and adaptable. That its creators would have to eventually figure out the curveball of a premature cancellation, and that they nailed it, makes a sad but fitting end for a show that always embraced the opportunity to change with the times.
Many people, myself included, have written plenty about how well “Superstore,” a sitcom about the employees of a Walmart-esque big box store, dealt with capital i Issues over the years. Its first two seasons alone tackled topics like gun control, birth control, racism and the everyday peril of being undocumented, as well as a union drive that would eventually fold under incredible corporate pressure.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Perfect Store” or “All Sales Final,” the two-part series finale of “Superstore,” which aired March 25 on NBC.
Arguably the most convincing fib that corporations sell their employees is that the workplace is a family in which everyone will look out for each other no matter what. This is by and large a comforting fiction designed to encourage workers to toil harder, and without complaint, at the behest of a machine continually trying to squeeze more efficiency out of its increasingly over-worked cogs.
The notion might be harder to sell if it weren’t for the frequent outcome of spending 40-plus hours a week with the same group of people, no matter how oddly matched: Through proximity, ambient chatter or sheer osmosis, you absorb the particulars of their lives — children’s names, weird little hobbies, minutiae and major milestones. Superstore gave fans one last bang for their buck before closing the doors to Cloud 9 for good. America Ferrera on Returning to ‘Superstore’ for the Series Finale and the Show’s Cultural Resonance
Attention, Cloud 9 shoppers: if you weren’t expecting Amy to return quite so soon, you weren’t the only one.
“Superstore” star and executive producer America Ferrera didn’t anticipate her character Amy would head back to St. Louis during the same season she left for a corporate gig at the big-box retailer’s headquarters in California, but news that Season 6 would be the NBC series’ last dramatically shifted the trajectory of her storyline.
“I expected and hoped that the show would go on after my departure for many, many years,“ she tells Variety. “So it was definitely coming back sooner than I think any of us imagined. But at the same time, we knew that in the setup of how Amy left, it really lent itself to how she could come back.”

The end is near for Superstore. On Wednesday, March 24, the NBC comedy treated fans to a look at the cast's original audition tapes ahead of the upcoming series finale. In the just released video below, we watched as Mark McKinney, Lauren Ash, Nico Santos and more auditioned for their now beloved characters. First up, there's McKinney finding his voice as Glenn, the super positive Cloud 9 manager. What made the footage even more special? It's played opposite the scene that made it into the series. In fact, the way Santos introduced himself as Mateo was very similar to the cut that made it into the pilot. We can't say that's entirely surprising...

The ensemble comedy, about a group of retail workers at a fictional big box store, stars Ben Feldman, Lauren Ash, Colton Dunn, Nico Santos, Nichole Bloom, Kaliko Kauahi and Mark McKinney. “Superstore” is produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, in association with Spitzer Holding Company, Miller Green Broadcasting and The District.

This news ought to put “Superstore” fans on Cloud 9: America Ferrera is returning to the NBC comedy for its March 25 series finale.
Ferrera played the lead role, Amy Sosa, for the majority of the sitcom’s six-season run. She was also an executive producer on the show before exiting.
“Superstore” will conclude with a one-hour series finale on Thursday, March 25 at 8 p.m. on NBC.
Though the show won’t go on (beyond March), the relationships between “Superstore” executive producers and Universal Television (Utv) will. Justin Spitzer, Gabe Miller and Jonathan Green renewed their overall deals with the studio last year, and Spitzer is continuing his relationship with NBC with his upcoming series “American Auto.”
Fellow “Superstore” executive producers David Bernad and Ruben Fleischer currently serve as exec producers on Utv’s “The Bold Type,” which airs on Disney cable channel Freeform. Victor Nelli, Jr. also serves as an executive producer on “Superstore.
