Short films Two Sands and In Australia have snared the lion’s share of nominations for the Wa Screen Culture Awards, recognised across both the innovation and outstanding achievement award categories.
Now in its second year, the WASCAs are presented and produced by the Revelation Perth International Film Festival, in collaboration with the Wa screen industry, to recognise new, established, and emerging screen practitioners across a variety of disciplines.
Of this year’s nominees, Poppy van Oorde-Grainger’s Two Sands is the most represented with eight nods, while Miley Tunnecliffe’s In Australia has seven.
There is also good news for Rush Films, with Gracie Otto’s Under the Volcano, Frances Elliott and Samantha Marlow’s Girl Like You, and Jacqueline Pelczar’s Sparkles all scoring multiple nominations.
Revelation Film Festival director Richard Sowada said he couldn’t wait to reveal the deliberations of the 36 screen professionals that make up the jury for the awards.

Stan has announced a slew of new local commissions as it ramps up ambitious plans to have around a third of its first-run slate come from original production.
These include Hoodlum Entertainment feature film Christmas on the Farm, Matchbox Pictures drama Bad Behaviour, and a number of projects with Roadshow Rough Diamond, with whom the Nine-owned streamer has extended its partnership. With the latter it is readying a third season of Bump and a spin-off, Year Of, as well as a Gregor Jordan-helmed crime drama, Ironside.
Last year, Stan flagged it intends to invest in more than 30 productions per year within five years, drawing on Nine’s production facilities and co-productions with international partners including Hollywood studios and international networks.
Earlier this month, the service announced a children’s feature film initiative with the Australian Children’s Television Foundation (Actf), and it has a lengthy list of upcoming local projects...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences named the 19 achievements that will be celebrated by the Academy at the Scientific and Technical Awards Presentation Saturday, Feb. 15.
The awards will be presented separately from the Oscars, and are, indeed, awarded through a different process. The technologies honored do not need to have been invented in the year 2013 to win, rather, they need to have been proven to be vital contributions to filmmaking.
“This year’s honorees have in a myriad of ways enabled today’s moviegoing experience. Their efforts have advanced not only the art and science of motion pictures, but the work of countless global industries,” proclaimed Richard Edlund, the Scientific and Technical Awards Committee Chair, himself an Oscar-winner for his work in visual effects.
Here is the entire list as presented in the press official Academy press release:
