Hollywood Mavericks was a 1990 documentary focusing on seventeen maverick directors who were not afraid to break the rules of filmmaking to advance their art from John Ford to Martin Scorsese. Directed by Florence Dauman and Dale Ann Stieber and written by Todd McCarthy and Michael Henry Wilson, with interviews directed by Lance Bird, Hal Lansberry and Don McGlynn. I became interested me to watch this comprehensive look at our great indie directors again particularly because of Sam Fuller!

Some subjects are so big, and span so many decades, that it seems a fool’s mission to tackle them in anything less than the mini-series format. With “Rejoice and Shout”, however, director Don McGlynn deftly traces the 200-year history of gospel music, and its evolution from spirituals and early hymns to four-part, harmony-based quartets, along the way both soaking up and giving off influence to blues, swing, soul and even the hip-hop of today. Part documentary, part concert film, it’s a mind-bogglingly complex undertaking. We had a chance to talk to McGlynn one-on-one recently, about knowing and staying true to his film’s audience, the discovery of some amazing musical clips, and the extraordinary amount of...

Title: Rejoice and Shout Director: Don McGlynn Featuring: Mavis Staples, Smokey Robinson, Ira Tucker, Willa Ward and many more Because of the very simple nature of the human voice, and what its sound means to us, music captures the human experience in a special way that other art forms cannot. If joy is nearly impossible to contrive, then listening to the joyous, excited and unblinkingly forthright celebration and expression of community, faith and gratitude to simply be alive can be a profoundly moving experience, one impractical to resist. Such are the life lessons communicated by Don McGlynn’s ‘Rejoice and Shout’, an exhaustively comprehensive documentary about the 200-year musical history of African-American Christianity....

"With his Bud Cort haircut and morbid sensibility, Oliver Tate (Craig Roberts) is too smart for Swansea, Wales, an industrial city mired in some seriously mid-80s Thatcherite doldrums," begins Vadim Rizov at GreenCine Daily. "The trouble with Oliver is that he knows he's clever, which could justify anything: surreptitiously monitoring his parents' sex life, taunting an overweight girl to make local cutie Jordana (Yasmin Paige) notice him as a real livewire, or trying to trash the house of downhill neighbor Graham Purvis (Paddy Considine) who may be having an affair with mom (Sally Hawkins). Fortunately, Submarine, Richard Ayoade's feature debut, is aware of Oliver's self-justifying nature and the ways it could warp him…. Acutely aware of the long tradition of films about disaffected young men coming to terms with themselves, Ayoade doesn't duck the precedent: instead, like Oliver…, he nods to seemingly every single precursor. There's a 400 Blows-quoting dash across the beach,...

Those who enjoy gospel music strictly as a genre—as opposed to as a form of worship—may be put off by the first 10 minutes of Don McGlynn’s documentary Rejoice And Shout. With this film, McGlynn attempts to cover the intertwined history of gospel and the African-American experience, from slavery through the civil-rights movement and beyond. But Rejoice And Shout doesn’t start out in historical mode. It begins with one interview subject after another testifying to the power of God, and explaining how music affirms their faith. It’s hard to tell whether this opening salvo of ...

This is the Deep South — Memphis, Tenn. Bible Country, USA. A land of crops and cotton, sweeping fields and schoolhouse churches. It’s a region that has seen more than its fair share of racial injustice and, more recently, natural catastrophe.
But all of that seems a million miles away come Sunday morning, drowned out by the sound of a million and one evangelicals, raising their voices in song.
It’s a time-honored tradition as old as the Negro spiritual itself, driven by an a capella harmony so powerful and true it’s come to represent both the struggle and salvation of African-Americans in the Bible Belt. It is the...

The Vancouver International Film Festival is my baby. In its 29th year, this is the event I look forward to every year. The lists I've kept through the year come out and I eagerly look through the list of titles in search of those little gems and every year Viff responds with a huge assortment of titles. This year's festival is no different.
Some of the titles we're most eagerly anticipating include Tsumetai Nettaigyo’s Cold Fish (trailer), Gareth Edwards’ Monsters (trailer, review), Jo Sung-Hee’s apocalyptic road movie End of Animal, Carl Bessai’s Repeaters (trailer) and Xavier Dolan's Heartbeats (trailer, review).
There's loads more so be sure to check the titles (so far) after the break. Many more to be announced in the coming days.

Is it a revelation or a revolution? It’s both! The Revelation Perth International Film Festival is tackling the theme of “Revolution” when its 13th annual edition begins violating Australia on July 8-18. Get set for 11 days filled French zombies, Belgian cowboys, outer space outlaws, Beat poets, cat ladies, gospel musicians and other revolutionaries.
Actually, one of the main features of the festival this year is a slew of music documentaries, mostly spotlighting both American and Australian music. On the U.S. side of things there’s Wheedle’s Groove, a look at the history of Seattle funk; Rejoice and Shout, which examines gospel music’s impact on African-American culture — and vice versa; Tom Dicillo’s Doors documentary When You’re Strange; plus The Family Jams and 72 Musicians. And, from Australia, there’s Megan Simpson-Hubberman’s classic concert film The Night of the Triffids.

From my inbox… a couple of film screenings at Bam Theaters in Brooklyn, NYC, both part of the BAMcinemaFEST film festival.
First, screening at 12:30pm today… a film previously profiled on this blog – Freedom Riders, directed by Stanley Nelson. From May until December 1961, more than 400 black and white Americans risked their lives – many enduring savage beatings and imprisonment – for simply traveling together on buses as they journeyed through the Deep South. Deliberately violating Jim Crow laws, the Freedom Riders’ belief in non-violent activism was sorely tested as mob violence and bitter racism greeted them along the way.
Second, screening at 3:30pm today, a film called Rejoice And Shout, directed by Don McGlynn. Featuring interviews with musicians like Smokey Robinson, Mavis Staples, Ira Tucker, Marie Knight, and many more, Rejoice and Shout traces the history of gospel music from its beginnings on Southern plantations and Baptist churches to national prominence.

Less than a week worth of recovering from the Sundance Film Festival, and we are already looking forward to our next, big film fest coverage. That would be the South by Southwest Film Festival held annually in Austin, Texas. Last year, Scott and I brought you all kinds of coverage from the Lone Star State, and this year doesn’t look to be much different.
With that, the announcement came last night of the feature films that will be playing at the SXSW Film Festival. Previous announcement were already made about films like Cold Weather, Electra Luxx, Hubble 3D, Lemmy, Saturday Night, and The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights making their debut. Kick-ass was recently announced as the opening night film, as well.
Among the other films being presented this year are some Sundance darlings, a few, highly anticipated premieres, and MacGruber.

I was so excited at seeing the SXSW line up last night that I completely forgot to post it and started searching the interwebs for cool content to go with it. Oops. Yes, I wish I was there but alas, it wasn’t mean to be (though don’t despair. We’ll be bringing you wicked awesome coverage).
But enough rambling, you want to know what’s all playing. Well, for a start there’s the much anticipated McGruber (trailer), the Duplass’ semi-mainstream comedy Cyrus, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs (trailer, review), Daniel Stamm’s horror flick Cotton and that’s on top of the previously announced titles which include Electra Luxx (Carla Gugino as a pregnant porn star? Bring. It. On.) and Kick-Ass (trailer). That’s already a great line-up but dear me, some of the other titles are pretty awesome too.

Late yesterday the SXSW Fim Festival, which runs from March 12-20 in Austin, TX, announced the full lineup of films that will be screening at this year’s event. And baby, it’s quite a list. Mixing big name films with intimate indie gems, the sheer number of films and the vast array of talented filmmakers is sure to be a hit with attendees and critics alike.
This lineup includes premieres of studio films such as Universal’s MacGruber, Lionsgate’s teen superhero actioneer Kick-Ass and smaller films like Tim Blake Nelson’s Leaves of Grass, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs, Michel Gondry’s The Thorn in the Heart and Steven Soderbergh’s And Everything Is Going Fine. With so many films to watch, it will be very difficult to find time to seem them all during the events nine days. But hell, we’re going to try.

- With the forthcoming releases of Control and I'm Not There - the folks over at Time Out (London) brought their collective of film and music critics together to chart the top films pertaining to music legend. The Top 50 list manages to make no mention of a recent Hollywood-ized bio-tales of Ray Charles and Johnny Cash (thank you!) and from the chunk of films that I have seen the positioning seems a propos. Todd Haynes' who has his Dylan creation coming out soon tops this list with one of my favorite films from the helmer in Superstar: the Karen Carpenter Story. Personally I would have found space another Da Pennebaker film in Depeche Mode 101 and Grant Gee's Meeting People is Easy - a brilliant Radiohead doc. Here's the top 50 list -1 Superstar: the Karen Carpenter Story (Todd Haynes, 1987)2 Don't Look Back (Da Pennebaker, 1967)3 Gimme Shelter (David Maysles/Albert Maysles/Charlotte Zwerin,
