Stars: Elijah Wood, Stephen McHattie, Madeleine Sami, Martin Donovan, Michael Smiley | Written by Toby Harvard | Directed by Ant Timpson
Directed by Ant Timpson in his feature directorial debut, based on his idea and written by Toby Harvard (The Greasy Strangler), Come to Daddy is a New Zealand film project. It stars Elijah Wood (Lord of the Rings), someone not unfamiliar with New Zealand film work, as Norval Greenwood, a thirty-something musical artist who travels to a cabin in the middle-of-nowhere and attempts to reconnect with his father.
Stephen McHattie plays Gordon, a wonderfully manic and unpredictable man, played with a real tension that creates discomfort and awkwardness in the scenes between himself and Norval in the early stages of the movie. Norval begins as a cocksure and almost arrogant character with a past shadowed with demons of alcoholism and self-harm, but as the film progresses and the relationship between father and son grows and adapts,...

In 2015 it was announced that Frightfest were set to bring us, under a “Frightfest Presents” banner, some of the horrific delights of their Glasgow and London festivals on DVD and VOD thanks to a partnership with Icon Film Distribution. And whilst that partnership did garner a number of releases – including the likes of Some Kind of Hate, Emelie, Night of the Living Deb and The Sand – the label went dark soon after, with not only the two-year deal coming to an end, but also likely due to the fact that Frightfest partner Icon had some financial woes in 2017, eventually been sold to Kaleidoscope in March of this year.
Skip forward to today and news reaches us that the Frightfest Presents label is reborn, this time in co-operation with Signature Entertainment – a label who we have supported since the early days of their direct to DVD B-movie start-up, with titles such as SnowBeast,...

Nice to see we’re setting trends here on Nerdly. After announcing our own foray into VOD, and more importantly into the distribution of unseen, often independent, horror movies, with Nerdly Presents, Icon Film Distribution and FrightFest, the UK’s leading horror fantasy film festival, have announced that they’ve entered into an exclusive partnership that will see Ifd releasing FrightFest curated films under the banner ‘FrightFest Presents’.
In a move to expand the Frightfest “brand”, select FrightFest endorsed films will be made available across the UK and Ireland via Ifd’s digital partners (including Sky, iTunes, Amazon, Blinkbox, Film4OD, VirginMovies, TalkTalk, Google, Volta, and Eircom) giving film fans instant access to some of their favourite FrightFest titles. Here’s hoping some of those Frightfest-screened movies which never made it to UK distribution finally see the light of day – films like Israeli zombie film Cannon Fodder for example…

Always with one eye on the past and the other on the present, FrightFest ensure an enduring celebration of genre cinema. After supporting director Jake West and producer Marc Morris’ Moral Panic, Video Nasties and Videotape, FrightFest have once again leant their support to the follow-up documentary Video Nasties: Draconian Days, which picks up where Moral Panic left off to look at the fallout of the 1984 Video Recordings Act.
To celebrate the home entertainment release of Draconian Days that continues a comprehensive discussion of a compelling chapter in British film spectatorship and censorship, HeyUGuys turned the tables on West and Morris as they shared their thoughts on censorship past, present and future, the advantages of notoriety and the positive side to the Draconian Days amongst other points of discussion.

Watchmen writer Alan Moore to attend world premiere of his screenwriting debut, Show Pieces.
Film4 FrightFest is to screen a record 20 short films, 12 of them world premieres, at this year’s August 23 event in London.
World premieres include Show Pieces, comprising three tales written by Alan Moore, the writer of graphic novels including Watchmen, The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, From Hell, Constantine and V For Vendetta.
It marks the first time Moore has written for the screen and the short is directed by his close friend and acclaimed photographer Mitch Jenkins.
The interconnected trilogy kicks off with Act of Faith in which a young woman looking for the next step in sexual excitement finds it with unfortunate consequences. Jimmy’s End tails a serial philanderer down a dark alley into a very unusual club where the top-billed attraction is The Bad Brides and their Danse Macabre; and His Heavy Heart reveals the horrifying price paid for his...

Film4 FrightFest will be screening a record twenty short films, twelve of them world premieres, at this year’s August event at the Vue West End, Leicester Square – including the latest from director Federico Zampaglione entitled Remember, the Fiona Dourif starring She (which I backed on Kickstarter many moons ago) and the second Jessica Cameron-starring production showing at Frightfest, the UK-lensed short The Tour.

We are only a few weeks away from the geeky awesomeness that is San Diego Comic-Con, and studios are lining up to show off their upcoming slate of projects. Today, Warner Bros. announced details on what they plan on bringing to the show, including the DC Comics based TV shows, Batman anniversary celebration, and first looks at the final Hobbit film and Mad Max Fury Road.
If you're planning your Sdcc weekend around what could be announced, then these schedules will come in very handy for you. WB has now announced their schedule of events and broken down what they expect to show at this year's event. From the sounds of it we'll be getting our first teasers for The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies and, thankfully, Mad Max: Fury Road.
While some are wondering at the absence of any mention of Batman v. Superman, I wouldn't get too upset just yet.

FrightFest 2013 was one of the best programmes the team have put together in the festival’s fourteen year history. On Saturday morning Paul McEvoy told us with equal parts surprise and delight that they had four screens running simultaneously, the demand for the movies this year was so great. None of this is surprising; FrightFest has long been the festival with the reputation to which others can only aspire.

The giallo film has been away for way too long. And because of that fact this news makes me happy. So if you're one of those lucky sods who'll be at London's Film4 FrightFest this weekend, you'll have an opportunity to dig on this promising throwback thriller.

The Human Centipede II, which premiered last week in the Us at Fantastic Fest but is banned in the UK, is easily one of the most disgusting films ever made – but it's also one of the most tedious
On 6 June, the British Board of Film Classification refused to give a certificate to The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence), effectively meaning the film cannot be legally sold or exhibited in your fine country. I'm from Austin, Texas, and I'm not here to cast judgments; Lord knows my own country's ratings board is a big, fat mess. And given that I'm a longtime film critic and lifelong film freak, I find the idea of censorship to be truly detestable. But at least you can take solace in the fact that your country's board does seem to care about its citizenry. Ours has long been living, and rather comfortably, in the back pocket of the Hollywood studios.

Source: FilmShaft - The Devil Dared Me To Get FrightFest Features Release
Last month we reported on an exciting new distribution adventure between the amazing chaps at FrightFest, eOne and Wild Bunch.
The first flick they released under the FrightFest Features banner was an Italian chiller called Shadow and now they've announced the next title!
It sounds really mental and great fun. It's called The Devil Dared Me To and directed by New Zealand filmmaker Chris Stapp. Below is the press release, some quotes on and DVD artwork.
From the press release:
"Chris Stapp’s gasoline-fuelled, turbo-charged story of vodka-swilling Randy Campbell and his dream of becoming New Zealand’s greatest living stuntman is set for a UK DVD release on May 23 through FrightFest Features.
The Devil Dared Me To, which screened at FrightFest, is the second title to be released through the recently created joint venture between Wild Bunch and FrightFest which will,...

If there's one reason to be completely envious of our friends across the pond it's London's Film4 FrightFest. Every year the show kicks a copious amount of ass and all us yanks can do is drool. Well, drool and check out coverage that is!
Below you'll find FrightFest's official coverage video of the Day One proceedings which included two films we've been talking about forever, Dead Cert and Hatchet II (review here). Dig it!
Day One, Thursday 26th August 2010, of the eleventh annual Film4 FrightFest, held at the Empire Leicester Square. FrightFest gurus Alan Jones, Ian Rattray, Paul McEvoy and Greg Day discuss the fun and hard work that goes into organising such an event, and explain how the festival's greatest asset is its fans; the cast of Dead Cert, here making its world premiere, explain how to mix East End gangsters into a vampire movie; and Kane Hodder, Tony Todd...

Steven R. Monroe’s remake of Meir Zarchi’s I Spit On Your Grave is a strange prospect. Its politics remain as confused as its narrative. What we have here is the rape-revenge movie going hand-in-hand with the torture porn genre. This remake isn’t as grotty as the notorious original but it is certainly more absurd.
One doesn’t know whether to cheer or disapprove of the barbarism in Jennifer’s revenge. In the screening (its European premiere), people cheered and winced; but mostly, they cheered. This production was always going to be contentious stuff, and while its a weird movie, it isn’t terrible.
According to the introduction by festival man Paul McEvoy, two seconds have been removed by the British Board of Film Classifcation and in the Us the MPAA refused to pass it, so it went out unreleased. Of course it’s shockingly violent – but that’s what audiences expect.

The UK’s very own Horror Channel have announced the introduction of Director’s Night to its schedule. The monthly slot, created exclusively for the channel and produced in-house, will provide viewers with a unique opportunity to get an intimate insight into the minds of the genre’s top directors on the UK’s only channel devoted entirely to the world of horror. Each night will feature a successful horror director in 3×3 minute segments introducing one of their own films, followed by two films of their choice from Horror Channel’s movie archives. Within each segment they will talk directly to the audience, revealing what it is they love about the genre, what inspires them and the reason why they have chosen each film.
