Blood is a huge component of storytelling when it comes to vampires and werewolves. The Vampire Diaries had plenty of graphic shots requiring digital and practical effects such as blood. One of the show’s stars, Candice King, the fake blood during kiss scenes could be a challenge.

It took a long time before Stefan Salvatore, and Caroline Forbes succumbed to their feelings for one another. Caroline was the first one to have feelings for Stefan after having a crush on him since high school. They got close and became friends and each other’s support system throughout the seasons, and when Caroline’s mother died in season 6, Stefan realized how deep his feelings for Caroline ran.
However, by that time, Caroline had switched off her humanity, and it was up to Stefan to bring her back.

This is the second year for the Makeup and Hairstylists Guild joining the awards game, and they've been a welcome addition to the circuit. They spread their nods thin across a number of categories, but it's a good window into what this branch digs, for sure. This year, the only two films on the Academy's bake-off list of finalists that didn't garner any recognition were "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and "Noah." Meaning "Foxcatcher," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Maleficent" and "The Theory of Everything" were each represented in one form or another. Meanwhile, "Guardians of the Galaxy" led with the most mentions at three, while "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Interstellar" and "Into the Woods" each got a pair. As previously announced, Oscar-winning make-up artist Rick Baker and Emmy-nominated hair stylist Kathryn Blondell will receive the Guild's Lifetime Achievement Awards. Check out the full list of nominees below,...

With writer/director Declan O’Brien’s Joy Ride 3: Road Kill releasing to DVD and Blu-ray this Tuesday, June 17th, here’s additional coverage stemming from our set visit last summer to the same in Winnipeg, Canada.
Written and directed by O'Brien, whose previous horror entries include the Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment features Wrong Turn 3, Wrong Turn 4 and Wrong Turn 5 (as well as Syfy's Sharktopus), Joy Ride 3: Road Kill (review) originated with the 2001 Paul Walker-starring, J.J. Produced by Kim Todd, this installment (which melds the worlds of tuner car racing and road-trip horror) stars Ken Kirzinger (Freddy vs. Jason) as the project's villainous truck driver 'Rusty Nail.’
Joining him are Kirsten Prout (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) as tuner-car girl ‘Jewel McCaul,’ Jesse Hutch (Freddy vs. Jason) as racer ‘Jordan Wells,’ Benjamin Hollingsworth (of the television series “Cult”) as mechanic ‘Mickey Cole,...

The screenplay of Patrick Ness's A Monster Calls has been included in the 2013 Hollywood blacklist of screenplays which show the most promise. We think about which book adaptations we would put on our own blacklists, and ask for your ideas...
Send your own book/film blacklist choices to childrens.books@guardian.co.uk or tweet them to @GdnChildrensBks and we'll post them below
Released earlier today, Hollywood's 2013 blacklist features 72 of the most exciting screenplays in circulation this year. It's an annual list, compiled by asking 250 top film executives to name their 10 favourite scripts that have not yet been put into production. Of the ones-to-watch, there was one in particular which stood out to us: A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness.
It's a heartwrenching, spooky tale of 13-year-old Conor who, living with his terminally ill mum, struggles with recurring nightmares and he tries to come to terms with his mother's cancer diagnosis.

Dread Central has been airing webisodes of Ghost Trek, a faux reality show lampooning all of the ghost hunting shows on TV today (like a Grave Encounters comedy). They began on 10/8 and now have 3 webisodes up, with a fourth coming next Monday. We recently got our hands on the press release that describes the show and links you to a featurette, trailer and an interview with some cast members from the WWE.
If I’m watching it, it’s because it stars the little zombie girl from The Walking Dead, Addy Miller. I have the trailer below, and the press release is below for your perusal, with links to a sizzle reel, interview with the cast, and a featurette on Ghost Trek: The Kinsey Report. Enjoy!
Trailer:
Do you ever watch those ghost hunting shows and scratch your head, thinking to yourself, “These shows are so ridiculous. Why am I watching this?...

Face Off: Who Won Season 2?
The second season of Face Off had a dilemma that most reality-competition shows would kill for. Before us tonight stood three nice, talented artists that you wanted to see win; nobody skated by, nobody seemed like a preordained winner, and everybody won by baring witness to the cool designs unleashed in the finale.
But it was Rayce, father of four and former tattoo artist from Idaho, that took home the $100,000, the 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid, and the $25,000 worth of Alcone makeup. Rayce had arguably been the frontrunner coming into the finale, with two wins and no trips to the bottom, but his well thought-out paint job, exceptional sculpting, and three-faced character helped put him over the top. Rayce's team included Jerry, Miranda, and Heather.
Season one winner Conor McCullagh recently completed work on the upcoming adaptation of The Hunger Games, so if that's any indication...

Let’s start off with this really excellent clip of tonight’s season premiere of Face Off. It’s a Wizard of Oz challenge and the artists’ concepts are amazing; this isn’t your 1939 MGM Wizard of Oz. Syfy's highest rated unscripted reality show "Face Off" returns on Wednesday, January 12th and we can't wait to see what magical creations this season's contestants come up with. We're also excited to see where they go. Last year's winner, Conor McCullagh just wrapped production on a little film called, "The Hunger Games." Maybe you've heard of it?
There's a hugely diverse group this year, including a toy designer, a sculptor, a tattoo artist and a high school teacher and contestants range from traditionally trained to self taught. But the real draw? The creatures they make.
This season, the group will have to re-imagine characters from "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," a waterproof sea creatures, bring phobias to life and build dinosaur/human hybrids. The show will again be hosted by Mckenzie Westmore, and judged by makeup artists Ve Neill, Glenn Hetrick and Patrick Tatopoulos.

"Ghost Trek" can best be described as "Reno 911" meets "Ghost Hunters", and the show's gang of misfits are out to prove that they're the funniest bunch of paranormal researchers since Peter Venkman, Raymond Stantz and Egon Spengler. Those of you lucky enough to be in the Louisville area of the Bluegrass State on Saturday, July 23rd, will get your chance to have a sneak peek at the pilot!
With a tagline that basically sums up the series ("Ghost Trek": Paranormal research with an emphasis on bad taste), the Paranormal Underworld Detective Society (that's right, Puds) is portrayed by an incredibly eclectic group of individuals. Actors, reality stars and former professional wrestlers are among the cast members, each bringing their own unique talent to the program.

With the advent of computer generated imagery, you would think there would be no room left for make-up artists in the industry. I beg to differ. There is nothing better than old school techniques like filling a condom with blood to do a gunshot wound, or appliance work seen on the Syfy Channel reality show Face Off. Now try being a woman in a field dominated by males and it is even tougher to break through. Megan Areford has defied all those odds and has proven she is talented and will be around for a long time.
Jason Bene: Tom Savini will always be the “King of Splatter”. Being a Pittsburgh native yourself, how bad-ass was it to attend his school and learn from the master?
Megan Areford: It was great! I got to make a lot of friends there. The most I ever had. I don’t know how to say this,...

For the season finale of Face Off, the four remaining contestants - Samantha Cobb, Gage Hubbard, Tate Steinsiek and Connor McCullagh, had to create a makeup for not one, but two fairytale characters in three days. Each contestant was given the opportunity to choose a fairy tale and to choose a theme such as post nuke or haunted, etc.
So how did everyone measure up? I have to say they really stepped it and each one of them should be proud of themselves. However, this is a competition and there can only be one winner. Samantha Cobb who decided to do a psychedelic take on The Little Mermaid, did an excellent job on her makeup, but her effort lacked the complexity and nuance of the other contestants work. Plus, her colors got muted by a bold background. She was the first one elimnated, and rightfully so, by the judges.
So that leaves just three now.

When I first saw the commercial for Face/Off I was more than stoked for this show to start. Now every Wednesday night at 10 pm (est), I find myself tuning into the SyFy channel to catch the only reality TV show that has ever sparked my interest....
When the first episode aired I immediately had my top 3 picks to make it to the final episode; Tom Devlin, Tate Steinsiek, and Connor McCullagh. Though all 12 contestants were extremely talented artists, I had my picks pegged from the beginning mainly because I loved the special fx makeup that they have done on previous projects.
The 12 contestants had to compete against artists from the whole country in several preliminary rounds. I recently spoke with contestant Tom Devlin about the casting process and he explained the procedure to me. First the contestants had to apply makeup on themselves with a 15 minute time limit, which...
