24 Hour Comics Day is here! Check with your local store for events, or stay at home and try it yourself! The rules are simple, as defined by Scott McCloud:
Create a complete 24 page comic book in 24 continuous hours.
That means everything: Story, finished art, lettering, color (if applicable), paste-up, everything. Once pen hits paper, the clock starts ticking. 24 hours later, the pen lifts off the paper, never to descend again. Even proofreading has to occur in the 24 hour period. (Computer-generated comics are fine of course, same principles apply).
No sketches, designs, plot summaries or any other kind of direct preparation can precede the 24 hour period. Indirect preparation such as assembling tools, reference materials, food, music etc. is fine.
Your pages can be any size, any material. Carve them in stone, print them with rubber stamps, draw them on your kitchen walls with a magic marker. Whatever you makes you happy.

This weekend includes at least three elements: the Jewish holy week between the New Year and the Day of Atonement, the weekend, and 24-Hour Comics Day.
I note that first part just in case somebody reads this to my mother. Hi, Mom!
24-Hour Comics Day was created by Scott McCloud and it is exactly what the name implies: comics creators get together in local conclaves (not autoclaves; that’s a completely different thing) “to create a 24-page comic book in 24 continuous hours.” It’s sort of a tribute to the days of yore when a creator would get an emergency over-the-weekend assignment and get a bunch of friends together to write, pencil, ink, letter and color the entire book over the weekend, deliver it on Monday, and hopefully get paid for their effort.
Of course, way back then comic books ran 64 pages – 48 pages after World War II hit speed. But...

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's a -- scrolling, scrolling ... Comics may have made the leap from printed page to silver screen (the Spider-Man trilogy alone has nabbed $2.5 billion at the box office), but the move from paper to mobile devices has been laden with Kryptonite. Fans at this San Francisco geek fest will assess digital comics' $1 million piece of the $680 million U.S. comics industry. Zooming and panning on the iPad still "yank you out of the experience a little more than they should," says comics writer and critic Scott McCloud. Rather than translate dots to pixels, he says, "the best thing is to format the page for the screen."

Google has marked Will Eisner's 94th birthday with a homepage 'doodle'. The image paid homage to the legendary cartoonist's distinctive architecture and his character The Spirit. "For most of his career, Eisner was years, even decades, ahead of the curve," wrote Scott McCloud on The Official Google Blog. "I saw him debating [with] artists and editors half his age, and there was rarely any question who the youngest man in the room was. It (more)...

'Eisner was a participant in, and inspiration for, much of the best in American comics,' artist Scott McCloud wrote of legendary creator.

Comic legend Will Eisner was honored Sunday (March 6), on what would have been his 94th birthday, with a creative Google Doodle that references the author's most famous works as interpreted by artist Scott McCloud.
The drawing shows the eyes of Eisner's most well-known creation, The Spirit (aka Denny Colt), substituting for the two "Os" in Google, flanked by buildings taken from his graphic novels about NYC drawn to look like the other letters.
"He died in 2005, but for six decades, Eisner was a participant in, and inspiration for, much of the best in American comics, as well as a friend and mentor to multiple generations of comics artists," McCloud wrote of why he chose to honor Eisner on the Official Google Blog.

A girl named Jenny showed up on the Internet yesterday quitting her job on a white board after her boss called her a "Hpoa," and Twitter's collective suspicions were immediately raised. Today, the whole hoax was outed with a follow-up post on theCHIVE, but Scott McCloud still loved it and considers the whole joke to be a success accomplished with comics.
Elsewhere, rumors about Robert Rodriguez and the Deadpool movie have been hot since Comic-Con ended. Rob Liefeld stated how he feels in no uncertain terms about Rodriguez last night on his account. Find out what he personally tweeted to Rodriguez after the jump, as well as how "Star Wars" may have been years ahead of the JetBlue flight attendant who bailed on the runway, and what it looks like when Alex Maleev draws Batman with his left hand.

Yesterday's news that a federal judge overturned California's Marriage Protection Act, popularly known as Prop 8, trended on Twitter accounts. Ron Marz was happy about it, and R. Stevens seemed pleased, but he still likes Iowa better than California.
Jimmy Palmiotti responded to an image "Watchmen" artist Dave Gibbons sent him earlier this week, which more or less proves that Palmiotti looks the part, should The Comedian ever need to be cast for a movie again. Find out if you agree after the jump where you'll also see who's working on a new Transformers book and what Fred Van Lente noticed about the CIA's website.

Prop 8 pt. 1: @ronmarz Hope all these "get gov't out of my life!" conservatives are happy now that Calif. gov't no longer tells people who they can/can't marry.

The concept that a comic book convention, which should be a wonderful introduction for kids to the dazzling and varied world of comics collecting–where a kid can meet and greet the creators he’s always admired and ask questions and feel that much closer to the (to him) magical process that brings super-hero adventures to him every month, and perhaps even fantasize about a time when he’ll be on the other side of that table, signing autographs or drawing sketches for kids that are the age that he is right then–the concept that such a convention should ever become a dangerous place, where young fans risk life and limb and might be trampled by alleged “adults” trying to get a hundred copies of the latest “hot” comic book signed so that they can tack on a few more bucks to the selling price–
It is intolerable.
Intolerable.

Somebody borrowed my runs of Denny O'Neil's Question, Scott McCloud's Zot!, and Mark Evanier's Crossfire. And come to think of it, somebody's got my copies of The Rampaging Hulk with all the Dominic Fortune appearances too. But you know what— just return them, and all will be forgiven.
Seriously. Don't make me call these guys.
What about you? What things have gone missing from your collections? Feel free to use the thread to recall other strayed books, records, DVDs, and so on.

Have a spare moment? Here's a selection of favorite books that explore the idea of crossing transitional space, each with its own take on what lies in-between...
1. Understanding Comics by Scott McCloudAn entertaining analysis of how comics work, in comic book form. Scott McCloud dissects just how a comic artist gets the reader to experience time and space in a flat, "still" medium. I particularly enjoy his explanations about what happens in between the panels. That's were he says the unique power of comics lies.
2. The Dot and the Line: A Romance in Lower Mathematics by Norton Juster A witty picture book that tells a love story between two characters from different mathematical states. Double entendres abound. Especially like the modernist, mixed-media illustrations. It is also an Academy Award-winning animated short film, animated by Chuck Jones.
3. Flatland: A Romance of Many Directions by Edwin A. AbbottWritten in 1884, it's the great...
