Broadway’s original Annie, Andrea McArdle, will no longer be appearing in NBC‘s upcoming Annie Live! special due to a family-related matter. “I am saddened to announce I will not be participating in Annie Live!,” said McArdle (via Deadline), who was set to play Eleanor Roosevelt in the live show. “My father is currently in the hospital, and I need to put all of my energy into his health and well-being. I wish everyone involved with the production great success. Break a leg everyone.” McArdle received a Tony Award nomination for her performance in the original 1977 Broadway production of Annie, where she sang her legendary rendition of the song “Tomorrow.” NBC confirmed her casting in the new special earlier this month after McArdle teased her role during a Today Show appearance. “We love Andrea McArdle and our entire company is sending best wishes to her and her father,” said Bob Greenblatt,...

Actor Alan Toy is set to play Franklin Delano Roosevelt in NBC’s upcoming Annie Live! holiday event, becoming the first actor to have contracted polio in the role of the president who famously had the same disability.
The character of Fdr makes a brief but memorable appearance in the musical.
“It is a huge honor to join such a talented ensemble,” said Toy, an actor and activist who speaks often on how mass media depictions of disability influence that community’s place in society. “Fdr has always been a role model of accomplishment for me, and I’m thrilled to be able to play him.”
Toy also congratulated NBC and the Annie Live! producers “for authentically casting a person with a disability for this role. I’m proud to represent the community and hope that we will continue to see more of the Disability Community in roles across entertainment media.

NBC is getting a New Deal for Christmas, as it gets back into the live TV musical business with “Annie Live!” Set to air during the holidays, “Annie” also represents a homecoming of sorts for producers Bob Greenblatt and Neil Meron.
Greenblatt, of course, is the former NBC Entertainment chairman who found success in bringing live musicals to the network, starting with “The Sound of Music Live!” in 2013. Meron and the late Craig Zadan were the producers behind that special, which was a tremendous hit — averaging 21.8 million viewers in live+3 ratings. It spawned follow-up events including “Peter Pan Live!” in 2014, “The Wiz Live!” in 2015, “Hairspray Live!” in 2016 and “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert” on Easter in 2018.
“Annie Live!” landed at NBC after being shopped to all four major broadcast networks. “NBC is where we started these live musicals and I still have so much affection for it,” Greenblatt said.

This episode of Broadway Rewind takes you to the opening night celebration of the new production of Michael Bennett's Pulitzer Prize winning musical A Chorus Line. But we start things off at a rehearsal for the one night only Actors Fund Benefit of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, which starred Emily Skinner as Miss Mona and Broadway's original 'Annie' herself, Andrea McArdle as Doatsey Mae. McArdle told BroadwayWorld's own Richard Ridge about her take on the role and her song, 'She reminds me a little bit of that Mabel Normand character. Doatsey Mae is very smart. If it wasn't for that Chicken Ranch in town, she would have been a happening girl. She's overshadowed by all of this tardiness in this tiny little town, and the song, is a heartbreaking number. It's sweet and a great country number.

The new musical “The Prom” won over industry folks with its big heart and bevy of Broadway insider jokes. But many wondered where each member of the ensemble cast would compete at this year’s Tony Awards. While the Tony Administration Committee decided Brooks Ashmanskas would be the sole Lead Actor contender, they went the opposite route with the women. Beth Leavel and Caitlin Kinnunen will each compete for Lead Actress in a Musical. So can they both land bids?

I thought throwing out my Annie CDs would be easy--i thought I only had one Obviously that would be the indispensable Original Broadway Cast Recording with Dorothy Loudon and Andrea McArdle. How wrong I was I knew that, as a kid, I had the tape of the 1982 movie soundtrack with Carol Burnett and Aileen Quinn and an all-star supporting cast, but I didn't remember buying it on CD. And when the hell did I get the CD of the 1999 TV version with Kathy Bates and an all-star cast And, oh yeah... I forgot about this studio album from the 90s with studio cast queen Kim Criswell--I think I bought back in the day somehow convincing myself Ruthie Henshall was playing Annie. Spoiler alert She plays Grace. Oh, and I do remember this '30thAnniversary' deluxe production with Chicago area diva and original star of the sequel, Annie Warbucks Alene Robertson...

Wow And in the same company as some of my Broadway idols, including Andrea McArdle, who I had the chance to perform on stage with recentlybut more on that later. The upcoming remake of "Annie" just unspooled its first trailer which looks (and sounds) promising. This updated version of the 1977 Tony Award winner for Best Musical has Oscar nominee Quvenzhane Wallis ("Beasts of the Southern Wild") as the winsome orphan and Oscar champ Jamie Foxx ("Ray") as her benefactor. Dorothy Loudon originated the role on Broadway and won the Tony over, among others, Andrea McArdle, the little girl who first belted out "Tomorrow." While Wallis may not possess as fine a set of pipes as McArdle, she sure is charming in the first trailer for the flick which is Columbia's big Christmas release. (Below, watch the trailer and let us know what you think in the comments section) -Break- Whether it will works it charms on the Oscars will depend on...
