Cue the glitter! Neil Patrick Harris revealed the poster art for his starring role in the upcoming Broadway production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch on his Twitter account Tuesday, and it's sure to get tongues wagging. "Hedwig News! The first ad image was just released, and I get to debut it!" the popular Tony host wrote. Looking very Rocky Horror punk in heavy eye makeup, ice-blue lips and loads of glitter, Harris, 40, certainly captures the look of Hedwig, an East German transgender rocker searching for love and fulfillment in America. The cult role, made famous by John Cameron Mitchell...

This gay love story straddles the Israel-Palestine divide, but with little real depth
A gay love story straddling the Israel-Palestine divide. Roy (Michael Aloni) is a well-to-do Israeli lawyer, Nimr (Nicholas Jacob) a young Palestinian on an educational permit in Tel Aviv. They fall in love, then into a whole heap of trouble as Israeli security services start investigating Namir's militant brother. There's romance and tragedy, but little depth and no nuance. Aloni and Jacob make for beautiful lovers, yet first-time director Michael Mayer has a tough time playing a catchy tune with just two notes.

Neil Gaiman’s children’s stories certainly strike a more frightening chord that most other Newbery Medal winning works, but that’s what makes them distinct and memorable. Gaiman’s Coraline honestly scared me as an adult reader but how Laika adapted it for the big screen made the story softer and loveable with its stop-motion visual techniques. Now Disney is looking to bring another one of Gaiman’s tales to life.
Deadline reports that Walt Disney Pictures has just sealed a six-figure deal for Gaiman’s best-seller and Newbery winner, The Graveyard Book. Sean Bailey, production chief at Disney, led the studio’s attempt at option the book and won a bidding war over several other studios. UK Effects company, Framestore, and Wayfare Entertainment Ventures’ Ben Browning had held the option previously but were not able to get the project going.

New York – Respect to director Michael Mayer and playwright Peter Parnell for their audacious attempt at reinventing a problematic musical in the Broadway revival of On a Clear Day You Can See Forever. The 1965 show has always been much loved for its lush Burton Lane score but denied the stamp of greatness by Alan Jay Lerner’s over-complicated structural mess of a book. Switching the gender of one point of the story’s romantic triangle, the new team has turned it into On a Queer Day. It’s an interesting twist but one that does little to alleviate the high-

Reports out of New York say that 14-year-old Kameron Jacobson committed suicide due to taunting on Facebook based on the perception he was gay. Not again. Please not another one.
I’m immensely excited by the news that NBC has ordered a pilot of Precinct 17 from Ron Moore, of Battlestar Galactica fame. It’s being described as “Harry Potter for grownups” which I think is quite insulting to grownups who love Harry Potter. But still, a police procedural in a world ruled by magic, and not science is a nice twist if NBC must insist on more procedurals.
Meanwhile, a fairly detailed and spoiler filled description of Battlestar: Blood and Chrome is out. I can totally see this as a miniseries, but I just don’t see how you can make it work as a full, open-ended series.

NBC has purchased the pilot for the musical drama pilot Smash, which is based on an idea from Steven Spielberg.

Judging by the news that has come out over the last few days, three things are super-hot right now: remakes [1], Julian Assange [2] and musicals [3]. On the musical front we've just seen Clint Eastwood sign to direct a new version of A Star is Born, and Bryan Singer is in the early stages of a possible Bob Fosse biopic for HBO. And now NBC has ordered a pilot for a one-hour musical drama called Smash, based on an idea by Steven Spielberg, who will exec produce. (I think the pic above is as close as he'll get to jazz hands, though. Leave that to Bryan Singer and the Fosse film.) EW [4] has the news, saying that if picked up, the show would "follow a cross section of characters who come together for the “exhilarating ride of putting on a Broadway musical." In other words, it's a new take on the 'let's put on a show!

No doubt hoping to capitalize on Glee mania, NBC has ordered an hour-long musical pilot that follows a diverse cast of characters who come together to stage a Broadway show.
Titled Smash, the project boasts an impressive pedigree. Producers include Steven Spielberg, Chicago duo Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, and Hairspray songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
Spring Awakening‘s Michael Mayer is in talks to direct, which pretty much guarantees that there’s a role in this for Lea Michele’s former Spring leading man (and ex-Glee costar) Jonathan Groff.

More and more I hear rumblings of the possibility that "American Idiot" can pull off an upset for best musical at the Tonys over "Memphis" and "Fela!," the two presumed front-runners. (See breakdown of pundits' predictions here.) Lots of voters are confessing that they've checked off their ballots for it. "Idiot" was believed to be the early Tonys front-runner, up until two glitches occurred. First, it didn't get nominated for best director (Michael Mayer). Just like at the Oscars, that's a nomination that usually must line up. Secondly, "Memphis" won the precursor prizes bestowed by the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards. But those prizes aren't really crucial forecasters. Examples: the Drama Desk Awards...

Who says the Tonys are a craven attempt to boost only the most popular performers and the most sold-out shows? This morning's nominations are welcome sign of some independence. Fela! (whose producers include Jay-z, Will Smith, and Jada Pinkett Smith) tied the acclaimed musical revival La Cage aux Folles with the most nominations, boasting 11 each. Director Kenny Leon's much-loved revival of August Wilson's Fences pulled in 10. True, big stars scored a number of the nominations: Denzel Washington and Viola Davis as lead performers in the play revival Fences (both are front-runners in their categories, and pictured in the middle...

It looks like Broadway could be the boulevard of fulfilled dreams for Green Day. Just weeks after opening, the Grammy-winning punk-pop band's rock opera "American Idiot" has been nominated for a Best Musical Tony Award.
The musical, directed by Michael Mayer and based on the 2004 album by the same name, faces some tough competition in the category. Other nominees are "Fela!," the musical backed by Jay-z, Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith and Alicia Keys, about late Nigerian Afrobeat guru and activist Fela Kuti; "Memphis," Bon Jovi keyboardist David Bryan's romantic show about a white DJ who falls in love with a black singer in the segregated 1950s; and "Million Dollar Quartet," a show about the historic Sun Records jam session of Elvis Presley,...

Not even a bomb scare in Times Square can put a damper on the close of the Broadway season. Nominations for the Tony Awards will be announced tomorrow morning and look for the awards to recognize some -- though not all -- of the celeb-filled shows that have dominated the Great White Way's box office this year. Sorry, Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig. You may have sold out your limited run in the cop drama A Steady Rain last fall, but we can't picture you in the Tony nominee lineup this year. However, you can expect director Kenny Leon's...

"I think a lot of people weighed really heavy on the 'American' side of American Idiot and what it's like to be an American and what it means when the record came out, so a lot of people were looking towards the political, angry part of it. But I think there is a theme with the characters, it's about people becoming lost and just trying to find their way, and I think that's a theme that's been going through our songs since 1988."
-Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, explaining the intentions behind their smash album American Idiot, which in turn inspired the stage musical "American Idiot," which just opened on Broadway on Tuesday night (April 20). But while the songs on American Idiot may have been fueled by the fog of war and the chaos of the Bush administration, it's the characters that are really meaningful to Armstrong. "I think,...

By now, you're probably aware that Green Day's 2004 album American Idiot was a fairly, uh, political affair. And while the Broadway version of the record doesn't exactly shy away from the topic, it also reveals a side of the music that most probably never realized was there in the first place: the personal.
"I think, politically, American Idiot, when we were writing it, it was trying to make sense out of a big mess," Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong said. "You're trying to find something to believe in, but it's difficult when you're getting bombarded with useless information. So it's just [about] trying to find your identity and your individualism in the midst of all that.

Would Kurt Cobain have ended up–like Sir Elton in his middle age–penning scores for the Great White Way? Would Sid Vicious have spent his golden years helping to choreograph dance numbers to accompany “Anarchy in the U.K.”? We’ll never know the answers to those questions, but punk rock–in the form of Green Day’s new musical “American Idiot”–has landed on Broadway.
The new musical, a story about love, alienation, war, unprotected sex, dead-end jobs and intravenous drug use that features music by the punk trio Green Day and lyrics by Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, opened last night at the St. James Theatre in New York City.
Here’s what the critics had to say:

Green Day driving force Billie Joe Armstrong grew up listening to--and gleefully singing--show tunes. So it's little surprise that the 2004 American Idiot opus, which he and group members Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool composed as a rock opera, has transferred to the Broadway stage under the same waaaay-commercial title. It's also not surprising that director Michael Mayer, whose last Gotham blockbuster was Spring Awakening, has guided the 90-minute adaptation to the St. James after a couple of preliminary try-outs at Berkeley Repertory Theatre and at Vassar. So what if the result--supplemented by cuts from more recent Green Day product--is a mixed blessing? That'll hardly deter the Green Day fans. They'll flock to the event and undoubtedly bring along as-yet-unconverted ticket-buyers. That eager and surely vocal crowd won't mind the story Mayer and...

Green Day's "American Idiot" musical made its official Broadway premiere at New York's St. James Theatre on Tuesday night. If the band being moved to tears by the production isn't motivation enough to make the trip to NYC to see the show, well, we figured we'd let the cast and crew tell you why you should check it out.
"As big a fan as someone is of Green Day, they might not even know how much dramatic potential is inside these songs," director Michael Mayer said. "And they have never heard them sung in this way before, so I think they may have a deeper appreciation of what Billie Joe and Mike and Tre have written.

New York (AP) — Anyone for alienation? The angry, aimless youth who populate the stage adaptation of Green Day's "American Idiot" have found their way to Broadway, venting their cynical unhappiness with life in the same theater that once housed such sunny, all-American musical-theater classics as "Oklahoma!" and "Hello, Dolly!" A permanent state of disaffection runs through this visually striking, musically adventurous take on the 2004 best-selling album that Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong and director Michael Mayer have turned into a show. The musical, which opened Tuesday at the St. James Theatre, is short, some 95 minutes. Just right...

Green Day were reportedly moved to tears while watching rehearsals for the Broadway musical version of their album American Idiot. Speaking to MTV, musical director Michael Mayer revealed that members of the band appeared emotional while viewing a recent rehearsal. "I was watching the actors, and I catch the eye of one of the singers, and he just gives me a little [thumbs-up] sign, and so that gave me the courage to look over at the band," Mayer said. He added: "And there were tears in their eyes. I saw that what we were doing was connecting to them on a heart-and-soul level, and it wasn't about commerce and it wasn't about business. "All of that went (more)...
