Last year, Brendan Fraser won Best Actor for “The Whale,” which also won Best Makeup and Hairstyling for artists Adrien Morot, Judy Chin, and Annemarie Bradley. This is a combination of Oscar categories that have popped up several times over the years. But could it happen again this year? Well, theoretically, yes.
The brilliant makeup artist Kazu Hiro, also known as Kazuhiro Tsuji, turned Bradley Cooper into Leonard Bernstein in Netflix’s “Maestro.” Kazu Hiro landed himself an Oscar nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside Kay Georgiou and Lori McCoy-Bell. Meanwhile, Cooper is nominated for Best Actor.
Along with “The Whale,” several other movies have done well with this pair of Oscar categories. In 2018, “Darkest Hour” won Best Actor for Gary Oldman and Hiro won Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick. In 2014, “Dallas Buyers Club” won both awards, too, with Matthew McConaughey winning for acting...

Best Actor looks set to be one of the most intriguing Oscar races this year with Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”) and Leonardo DiCaprio (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) currently battling it out at the top of our odds chart in this category.
Colman Domingo (“Rustin”) and Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”) are also predicted to reap nominations but it is Bradley Cooper in third spot that makes things really interesting. Cooper stars as Leonard Bernstein in Netflix’s “Maestro,” which he also produces, directs and co-writes. The Netflix feature, which opens on November 22, explores the complex marriage between the renowned composer and his wife Felicia Montealegre, who is played by Carey Mulligan. Mulligan is, as always, excellent, but Cooper has the transformative role here.
Makeup artist Kazu Hiro, also known as Kazuhiro Tsuji, turns him into Bernstein with astounding makeup and prosthetics. Cooper’s mannerisms, gestures, and vocal work prove add to his performance.

For casual moviegoers, there may only be a peripheral connection between the Best Makeup and Hairstyling category at the Oscars and the lead acting contenders on which that makeup is applied and whose hair is styled. For the longest time, this race was all about the special FX makeup, prosthetics and the like for genre films. The original 1968 “Planet of the Apes,” Rick Baker’s work on “An American Werewolf in London” in 1981, and the makeup effects for David Cronenberg’s “The Fly” are all examples of that.
In recent years, it has become more about making an actor look like the real-life person they’re playing. In fact, I wrote more about this very thing last year when “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” and “House of Gucci” were in the mix, although only the former helped actress Jessica Chastain on her way to winning her first Oscar. It’s happened five times in the last 11 years (including three years in a row) that an acting winner has has also carried along the hair/makeup team for triumphs at the Academy Awards, a trend that Brendan Fraser and the makeup/prosthetics team from “The Whale” (headed by Judy Chin) hope to continue this year. To be sure, the transformation of Fraser into a 600-pound man proved a visually stunning on-camera masterwork, and it would surprise few if the actor and the team in charge of his radically altered appearance were both to be honored with Oscar hardware.
Most recently, Jessica Chastain won the lead actress prize for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” at last year’s Oscars, while the makeup/hairstyling trophy went to that film’s Stephanie Ingram, Linda Dowds and Justin Raleigh for helping transform Chastain into Tammy Faye Bakker.

If you want to win an Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, make sure you’re doing work on Jared Leto. That might be one lesson from the Oscars shortlists, where Leto’s film “The Little Things” was included among the 10 semi-finalists in that category. If it ultimately receives a nomination and wins, it would be the third Leto film in less than 10 years to win this exact award.

Oscar voters love to reward the makeup artists and hairstylists who transform some of Hollywood’s most famous faces into historical figures. Since the competitive category of Best Makeup and Hairstyling was introduced at the Academy Awards in 1982, eight films in which performers portray famous folks have won this Oscar. Adam McKay‘s “Vice,” a sly satire on the life and times of politician Dick Cheney, is poised to be the ninth to do so.
Over the two hour plus running time of “Vice,” Christian Bale portrays Cheney from his early years in Wyoming to his eight years as vice president. The actor gained 40 plus pounds and shaved his head to look like the man who was second in command during some of the darkest days in American history.

The race for Best Makeup and Hairstyling is yet another tech category that has split our experts. The Hollywood Makeup Artist and Hairstylists Guild went for "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "Guardians of the Galaxy," and they've correctly predicted the eventual Oscar winner three times (it should be noted that last year was the first time they had given out awards in a decade): -Break- Wes Anderson talks 'Grand Budapest,' Oscars, Ralph Fiennes, and near-injury on set 2000: Rick Baker, Gail Ryan, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" 2003: Richard Taylor, Peter King, "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" 2013: Robin Mathews, "Dallas Buyers Club" (Oscar shared with Adruitha Lee) "Grand Budapest" and "Guardians of the Galaxy" are joined in this category by "Foxcatcher." Let's take a closer look at their chances of winning: Bill Corso, Denn...

The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. As far as...

Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.

Gravity may be set in space, but it achieved a landslide at the 86th Academy Awards, taking seven Oscars, while 12 Years a Slave went home with three.

The morning after the Oscars is always a strange feeling. We've been covering this process in earnest for months, and now it's over. And for the first time ever, I'm pleased to say that I scored a perfect 10 in predicting the winners in the crafts categories! (I went 21/24 overall, missing Best Live Action Short, Best Animated Short and…Best Picture.) To be fair, however, I'm hardly the only person to have gone 10/10 in this respect. In that sense, we had a night without surprises, which is not to say we didn't have stories. The big story in the crafts categories is, of course, "Gravity's" dominance, as it won six of the 10 below-the-line fields, with the obvious (and highly deserved) win in Best Visual Effects being a foreshadowing of things to come in Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing and Best Original Score. Visual effects supervisor Tim Webber,...

At the Independent Spirit Awards Saturday afternoon, John Cassavetes Award winner (and former In Contention contributor) Chad Hartigan told me something I didn't know: He wouldn't have made "This is Martin Bonner" if it weren't for Steve McQueen's "Hunger." He copped a few of the film's lines in his film, some of the camerawork, too. He was inspired, he said, by a filmmaker who could pull something that powerful off with such modest means, both financially and artistically. That, to me, is McQueen's legend. That, to me, is the kind of thing that will endure. These nickel-plated notions of "importance" that people throw around during the Oscar season, straining to associate some arbitrary level meaning to the thing, they can frankly diminish the very fine achievement on display. "I fear all the talk about the historical importance of '12 Years a Slave' almost completely obscures its extraordinary artistic merit,...

The 86th annual Academy Awards were really fun to watch. Ellen Degeneres did a fantastic job hosting, and I enjoyed the show she put on. It was also insanely predictable, at least, for me it was. Overall, I'm happy with all of the films that won. My favorite win of the the night was Spike Jonze taking home the Oscar for Best Original screenplay for Her. That was such an amazing movie, and I really wanted it to win that award, but I wasn't sure it would happen. My favorite speech of the night came from Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey. I was never really a big fan of his, but over the last couple of years he has sure blown up into an amazing actor who has starred in some really incredible films. Then that speech he gave last night won me over, and now I'm on team McConaughey.

While live-blogging the Oscars you really don't get too much of a chance to take in all the acceptance speeches. I catch a few moments here and there, and I can pretty much tell when the air is being let out of the room as well as those moments where someone is really capturing the moment. What I've put together below are the five speeches where I think the winner really managed to stand-out. I also love the true excitement coupled with the words chosen in these speeches. Lupita Nyong'o (12 Years a Slave, especially, seemed to capture the room with her infectious smile as much as Jennifer Lawrence a year before, not to forget her brother, Peter, who photobombed Ellen's Twitter-breaking selfie and is clearly someone very special in Lupita's life and she in his. Hard-hitting slavery drama starring Chiwetel Ejiofor becomes first film from black director to win top Academy award

12 Years a Slave has won the best picture Oscar at the 86th Academy Awards, defeating a nine-strong field that included Gravity, The Wolf of Wall Street and American Hustle for the headline prize at this year's ceremony. 12 Years a Slave becomes the first film from a black director to take the best picture Oscar.
Directed by Steve McQueen, the landmark slavery drama stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as a free man kidnapped and sold to slaveowners in 19th-century Louisiana. It was based on the bestselling memoir by Solomon Northup, first published in 1853. 12 Years a Slave follows McQueen's award-winning dramas Hunger and Shame, and was produced by among others Brad Pitt's Plan B outfit. The Oscars honor the best performances on film, but the telecast is all about celebrating the best speeches. Here’s how we called it:
1. Dallas Buyers Club’s Matthew McConaughey, Best Actor
Running over three minutes, the Best Actor acceptance speech was a monument of pure unfiltered McConaughey-ness. He thanked God. He thanked his late father: “I know he’s up there right now, with a big pot of gumbo…he’s probably in his underwear, and he’s got a cold can of Miller Lite, and he’s dancin’.” He went on a very long tangent about how his hero is himself — or rather,...

Sunday night’s Oscar winners had plenty to say onstage (Best Actor champ Matthew McConaughey even snuck in an “Alright, alright, alright”), but there’s always more to express after winning the biggest award in film. That’s where the backstage press room comes in, and EW was there to collect all the best moments and bons mots you didn’t see on TV.
For some, holding a golden statuette put them in a playful mood, including Jared Leto (Best Supporting Actor for Dallas Buyers Club), who passed his new hardware around the press room so everyone could share in his victory,...

12 Years A Slave, Gravity, Dallas Buyers Club, Frozen and more take home the Oscars. Here's the full list of winners...
Overnight, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences - AMPAS to its mates - handed out its annual clutch of Oscars. And as it turned out, the event went by the form book, with just one or two little surprises along the way.
The big prizes were split between 12 Years A Slave, Gravity and Dallas Buyers Club, with the former taking Best Picture, but Alfonso Cuaron picking up a gong for his directorial work on Gravity. Dallas Buyers Club picked up the two acting awards - for Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto - that it was broadly expected to. There were two gongs for Disney's Frozen too, in the week that it passed $1bn at the global box office.

Yes! Thank you to the Academy for this incredible recognition. It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone else’s. And so I want to salute the spirit of Patsey for her guidance. And for Solomon, thank you for telling her story and your own. 12 Years A Slave took home Best Picture, but it was Gravity that won the most golden statues with seven Oscar wins at the 86th Academy Awards.
Host Ellen DeGeneres had fun with the star-studded audience, ordering pizza and making Brad Pitt give out paper plates to lucky ladies such as Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts, who were all very hungry. DeGeneres also made fun of Jennifer Lawrence’s great fall at last year’s Oscars in her opening monologue and likening the entire awards show to The Hunger Games.
The awards went off swiftly, and not without a hitch or two, but technical difficulties aside, DeGeneres delivered a sweet, funny and uncontroversial show. Her best host moment came when she took a selfie mid-show with Streep that turned into a selfie with anyone in the first three rows who was quick enough to run and beat each other into the frame.

The critics may have taken Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" to task when it was released last summer, but the film is having the last laugh after a nice box office haul and a few scattered wins on the awards circuit. Production and costume designer Catherine Martin won Oscars in both categories Sunday night for the film's opulent threads and sets. She pulled the same feat 12 years ago for her work on husband Luhrmann's "Moulin Rouge!" Martin spoke with HitFix earlier this year about her philosophy when approaching costumes for film. But she deferred their perceived success to the actors wearing them. "If you look at the best models in the world, or the actors that promote product, they're bringing something extra to the product," she said at the time. "It's not just, 'I'm slim, I'm beautiful.' It's actually pushing the envelope. It's selling the dream. It's allowing...

Los Angeles, March 3: Catherine Martin won her first Academy Award for costume design for her work in "The Great Gatsby", while Adruitha Lee and Robin Mathews clinched the trophy of best hair and make-up for "Dallas Buyers Club" at the Oscars ceremony here Sunday.
Martin, who has been nominated for an Oscar for a total of six times, was overwhelmed on receiving the award, for which she competed against Michael Wilkinson ("American Hustle"), William Chang Suk Ping ("The Grandmaster"), Michael O'Connor ("The Invisible Woman") and Patricia Norros ("12 Years a Slave").
For Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby", she helped.

Here we are again after the Golden Globes, Mike Fleming and Anita Busch taking on the task of play by play during the most wide-open Oscar race we can remember. Even on the party circuit, industry insiders who usually have a grasp of who’ll walk away with Oscars were evenly torn between Alfonso Cuaron’s 3D masterpiece Gravity and Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave. Then again, there were so many terrific films that got Best Picture nominations, and all of them have at least a puncher’s chance at an upset. Related: Oscars: Pete Hammond’s Absolute Final Predictions That includes American Hustle, where David O Russell co-wrote the Best Original Script nominee with Eric Warren Singer and got tour de force performances and nominations for Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. Perfs so strong there was no room on the nomination roster for perennial Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner.

Funny how fast an Oscar season goes by… only last year Argo was being given the Academy Award for Best Picture. The big night is almost here and nothing about this year’s Academy Awards is a sure bet. With so much time between the nominations in January, the various guild awards and the Olympics thrown in, the 6,028 AMPAS voters have had a long time to mull things, and their votes, over.
The winner’s acceptance speeches at the Golden Globes, the Screen Actor Guild Awards (SAG) and the British Academy Awards (BAFTA) have never been more important as they have during this past month and a half. Voting for the Oscars closed on Tuesday, February 25, at 5 p.m.
Even the avid pundits are in a muddle and would give their eye teeth to see the final tallies. Will hopefuls Leto,...
