Hollywood directors are notorious flirts when it comes to picking projects, and spy thriller Red Sparrow has been the belle of the ball for some time. Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky was at one point eyeing the pic as his follow-up to Biblical epic Noah, and David Fincher considered coming aboard in hopes of reuniting with his Girl with the Dragon Tattoo lead Rooney Mara (who walked when Fincher did). Now, Francis Lawrence, who’ll finally be done directing Lionsgate’s Hunger Games films this fall, is in the mix to take the reins.
Lawrence is accustomed to swimming in blockbuster waters, albeit without the same consistent praise Aronofsky and Fincher have received throughout their careers. Outside of The Hunger Games quadrilogy (of which he directed three), Lawrence has helmed I Am Legend, Constantine and Water for Elephants, as well as episodes of short-lived series Kings and Touch. Still, working...

• Rooney Mara and David Fincher are reportedly circling the espionage thriller Red Sparrow. The two haven’t worked together since 2011′s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. The film will be set in present-day Russia, centered on an intelligence officer who is forced to become a “Sparrow” — someone who basically seduces people for information. She falls for the CIA officer she’s assigned to operate against. Fox is also in talks with Eric Warren Singer, who scripted American Hustle, to adapt the Jason Matthews book. Darren Aronofsky was previously considering the project. [Deadline]

We'll be honest: it's a little light. But we will be further investigating these:
Darren Aronofsky is in early talks to direct an adaptation of Red Sparrow, based on the Jason Matthews spy novel.
The Angelina-Jolie-is-Kay-Scarpetta movie is looking more likely since some complicated-sounding re-negotiation by Patricia Cornwell on the novels.
The Thor sequel is apparently still shooting scenes to ramp up the time devoted to Tom Hiddleston's Loki.

Exclusive: After a spirited bidding battle involving multiple studios, 20th Century Fox has just closed a 7-figure deal for film rights to the international spy thriller Red Sparrow by Jason Matthews. Film Rites‘ Steve Zaillian and Garrett Basch will produce. The book sold to Scribner in a similarly vigorous publishing auction last year. It will be published in June. The book is set in contemporary Russia, and state intelligence officer Dominika Egorova struggles to survive in the cast-iron bureaucracy of post-Soviet intelligence. Drafted against her will to become a “Sparrow,” a trained seductress in the service, Dominika is assigned to operate against Nathaniel Nash. He is a first-tour CIA officer who handles the agency’s most sensitive penetration of Russian intelligence. The two young intelligence officers collide in a charged atmosphere of tradecraft, deception, and inevitably, a sexual attraction that threatens their careers and the security of America’s valuable mole in Moscow.

This Oscars season, we’ll be toasting those off-screen artists by delving into the hidden secrets that helped create the on-screen magic that we — and the Academy — fell in love with. With Real Steel out in the UK this Friday, we caught up with director Shawn Levy to discuss the making of the film…
Real Steel offers a rivet-popping, metal-rending sci-fi take on the sports movie, and a refreshing counterpoint to more realistic genre fare such as The Fighter and Warrior. Although special effects play a big part in its entertainment factor, it is, like Rocky before it, a drama at heart, and in many ways this is as important to the movie’s success as giant robots and computer effects.
Ahead of Real Steel’s release on Friday, we caught up with director Shawn Levy to discuss the film. And here’s what he had to say – and do bear in mind, there's a bit of colourful language dotted about here and there...
