Daft Punk is a duo that hardly needs an introduction. From Grammy-winning hit songs like "Get Lucky" to their work on soundtracks to blockbuster movies like "Tron: Legacy," the electronic musicians have conquered the world. But long before Hollywood came calling, the French beat-makers got a boost from the folks at Cartoon Network. Specifically, when the band's anime-inspired music videos aired on Toonami.
Complex did a deep-dive into the history of the anime-focused gamble that was Toonami back in 2017. While the programming block certainly helped give anime a profile boost in the U.S., it also helped out several popular musical acts, Daft Punk among them. As Toonami co-creator Jason DeMarco explained at the time, the duo reached out to them when they were in the midst of premiering an ambitious music video project titled "Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem" tied to their second studio album,...

Mermaid fairy tales have enjoyed lasting popularity since Andersen's “The Little Sea Maid” and La Motte-Fouqué's “Undine”. Recent (unequal) reboots can further attest to this enduring appeal. Nothing surprising when considering the universality of these legendary creatures across civilizations and times. As for Japanese folklore, the Ningyo has gained a significant prominence not long ago through Miyazaki's “Ponyo” (2008). Just a decade later, the director of the celebrated “Mind Game” (2004), Masaaki Yuasa, developed his own rendition, this time in the form of a coming-of-age narrative.

Despite having graduated from the prestigious Tokyo University, Kazuhiko is unemployed and living with his parents without any plans for the future, in a lifestyle that could be easily described as that of a hikikomori. As the story begins, however, two events change his life completely, in rather unexpected ways. One day, he stumbles upon a former classmate, Yuri Sojima, who, opposite of him, is socially adept, cheerful, and even more surprisingly, seems to like him.

Michael Pena and Diego Luna of Netflix’s “Narcos,” Marvel Comics’ editor-in-chief C.B. No stranger to the world of film, Daft Punk has provided the scores for Tron:Legacy and Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem, made their own film with Daft Punk’s Electroma, and were even depicted (briefly) in this year’s stellar Eden. They’re now getting the documentary treatment in Daft Punk Unchained and today brings the first trailer.
Airing this summer in France, it’ll now hit worldwide sometime later this year and comes from director Hervé Martin Delpierre. This first preview seems to go deep into the mystery surrounding Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, but hopefully it also explores the process of making their distinct music.
Featuring interviews with Pharrell Williams, Nile Rodgers, Giorgio Moroder, Kanye West, Michel Gondry, Paul Williams, Peter Lindbergh, Leiji Matsumoto, Pete Tong, and much, check out the trailer and poster below.

The men behind the masks of Daft Punk, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, not only created a mystique by never showing their faces, but put all the more attention on their work, which changed the landscape of electronic music. Now, as befits a duo that have made a huge impression on the pop culture landscape, a documentary is one the way. "Daft Punk Unchained" already aired this summer, only in France, but now its making its way to the rest of the world, and a new trailer provides an inside peek. Daft Punk without their helmets is an odd sight - it's almost a surprise they aren't actually robots under there.
And it looks like the duo, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, will be taking off the headgear in a new documentary.

Pharrell Williams, Nile Rodgers, Giorgio Moroder, Kanye West, Michel Gondry, Paul Williams, Peter Lindbergh, Leiji Matsumoto and Pete Tong will all contribute to the film.
It of course won't be the first time that the duo have been seen unmasked - they were recently spotted without their signature headgear in La.
The pair have said their costumes are not a gimmick, explaining they stem from their own desire for "sci-fi glam" and desire to create fictional personas.

From Marine Boy and Thundercats to Cities Of Gold and Akira, we look at the TV shows and movies that introduced the UK to Japanese anime
One evening in 1994, the BBC screened a documentary simply called Manga. Presented by Jonathan Ross, it showcased the rising popularity of Japanese animation, largely focusing on the output of Manga Entertainment, whose dubbed VHS releases had made a huge impact on anime fans and caused a certain amount of consternation among the mainstream press.
For British viewers, the anime boom took a long time to arrive. In America, Japanese shows like Kimba The White Lion, Gigantor and Astro Boy were a common sight on television in the 1960s, yet it took until the late 70s and 80s, and a string of European-Japanese co-productions, before anime finally began to find a hold on UK television.

Anime fan favourite Space Pirate Captain Harlock stars in a new movie... but is it worth the wait?
If you're a fan of manga, you probably already know Harlock, although his fan following is much larger in France, Quebec and Japan. Harlock is the brainchild of Leiji Matsumoto (creator of Space Battleship Yamato/Star Blazers). Harlock was created in the 50s, but his breakthrough came in 1978 with the release of the original television series, Space Pirate Captain Harlock. He has since then seen many incarnations, but he had been absent from our screens since 2002. Given the current trend of revisiting old franchise favourites, Harlock was bound to suffer the reboot treatment at one point. Harlock has already been rebooted several times over the years, long before the term "reboot" was actually coined, so it shouldn't have been a big deal, but some fans feared that Harlock's move to the big...

A new behind-the-scenes feature for the cgi animated Space Pirate Captain Harlock has been revealed. It focuses on the performance capture for the animated film and also contains a new clip. The film recently premiered in Japan on September 7th. Appleseed's Shinji Aramaki directed the CG film which has been called a reinterpretation of the themes in Leiji Matsumoto's original 1977 manga. The film has Toei Animation's highest production budget ever which equates to about $30M U.S. Director James Cameron (Avatar, Titanic) previously praised the series as, "Mythic, epic and visually unprecedented, Harlock will take you to a whole new universe of ideas." Imagine if you will… It’s a Tuesday night with nothing to do. There you are, sitting on your couch, flipping through channel after channel of mindless drivel. “Is there nothing Good on these days?!” you ask yourself. So in an act of desperation you flip your favorite VOD service on (or open your local video rental catalog) and marvel at the endless hours of entertainment. What to watch? Comedy, Drama? Television series? Feature Film? Who has the time play TV roulette?! Nobody, That’S Who! So in an act of kindness, I lay before you the ten best anime series of yesteryear (in no particular order) for you to burn your eyeballs with during those slow weekday nights! And let’s face it… If your already reading this, What Else would you be doing on a weekday night? Hmm?

Without realizing it, I grew up exposed to the earliest anime, shows like Astro Boy and The Amazing Three and Kimba the White Lion. It was a quiet invasion overshadowed by louder, more colorful and kinetic American animation on Saturday mornings and classic Warner cartoons on weekday afternoons. As a result, I missed the next great era of American anime such as Space Battleship Yamato and Robotech. It certainly developed a large following in the 1970s and 1980s with the airwaves packed with these shows. In fact there were so many that several shorter-run series were packed together as Force Five. The Wednesday show was known as Spaceketeers and ran for 26 episodes, edited down from 73 episodes and never quite concluded the story.
Now, Shout! Factory has taken the series, which was edited into three different films by Toei in 2009 and is releasing them on disc. The new version was written and directed by William Winckler,...

"During the last Great War, a man rose to become a hero. But then he betrayed his country to become a pirate. Is he truly an enemy of the state? Or its last great hope?" Appleseed's Shinji Aramaki will direct the CG film which is said to reinterpret the themes in Leiji Matsumoto's 1977 manga for modern society. This film has Toei Animation's highest production budget ever which equates to about $30M U.S. and will be released to much fanfare in Japan on September 7, 2013. An international dub is currently in production for release in the Us and the UK. Director James Cameron (Avatar, Titanic) previously praised the series as, "Mythic, epic and visually unprecedented, Harlock will take you to a whole new universe of ideas." Another awesome new trailer has been released for the great looking CG animated film Captain Harlock: Space Pirate. The film may look like a video game cut scene, but it doesn't make it any less cool.
The story follows Captain Harlock as he fights for humanity with his 40 crew members aboard the invincible space battleship Arcadia. I'm looking forward to checking this out as soon as it gets released, whenever that is.
The movie is an adaptation of the popular Japanese manga series, which was created by Leiji Matsumoto in 1978 that eventually spawned a TV anime series, a few features, and the sequel called Arcadia of My Youth: Endless Orbit Ssx.
The script was written by Harutoshi Fukui (Mobile Suit Gundam Uc novels, live-action Bōkoku no Aegis) and was developed to reflect the themes of modern society. It was directed by Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed). The movie should be released in Japan sometime this fall.

Via Anime New Network, we have new info on a proposed English dub for the ambitious CG remake of Space Captain Harlock (which looks to be retitled Harlock: Space Pirate for english speaking audiences). London-based Gfm Films is reportedly working on an English dub as the film works towards completion in post-production. There's also a figure line in the works from Square-Enix that will be unveiled at Square-Enix's San Diego Comic-Con along with a new trailer. Maybe we'll get a worldwide theatrical release for this film? The visuals shown so far are very impressive and with the right marketing push a limited international run would be warranted. Said Avatar director James Cameron, ‘Mythic, epic and visually unprecedented, Harlock will take you to a whole new universe of ideas.’ Appleseed's Shinji Aramaki will direct the CG film which is said to reinterpret the themes in Leiji Matsumoto's 1977...

"The most powerful force is hope." Who is Captain Harlock? Unless you're from Japan or otherwise familiar with Leiji Matsumoto's manga, this is likely a character many have never heard of (at least I haven't). But if you're a fan of Appleseed or Final Fantasy, you'll want to take a look. Captain Harlock: Space Pirate is a CG animated space epic that seems to involve some gnarly space pirate ships, apparitions with pointy ears and lots of long-haired characters. The animation in this looks incredible, all the fine details in the hair and environments around them. I'm interested in seeing this admittedly more for the visuals than anything else. Here's the first official trailer for Shinji Aramaki's Captain Harlock: Space Pirate first found on AICN: Captain Harlock is the archetypical romantic hero, a space pirate with an individualist philosophy of life. He is as noble as he is taciturn,...

Even if you’re not a fan of manga anime, it’s well worth it to watch. Based on the original space opera anime Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Leiji Matsumoto’s manga character is being brought to CGI life in a new theatrical flick from Toei Animation.
Directed by Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed) from a script by Mobile Suit Gundam Uc author Harutoshi Fukui, the story follows Captain Harlock as he fights for humanity with his 40 crew members aboard the invincible space battleship Arcadia.
The 1978 Matsumoto’s manga initiated a TV anime series, a few features, and the 1982 sequel called ‘Arcadia of My Youth: Endless Orbit Ssx.’
Despite the fact that this new Captain Harlock CG feature is technically an adaptation, the film still follows the same story and the look of the character is even similar, though decidedly darker than the original 1978 Space Pirate Captain Harlock.

Back in 2010, Toei Animation previewed a 4-minute pilot trailer for a potential CG animated adaptation of Space Pirate Captain Harlock at the Tokyo International Anime Fair. Fortunately for fans of the classic property, it seems there has been progress on the production since then. The Japanese media has confirmation on a fall release and a teaser trailer has been unveiled. Based on a space opera manga by Leiji Matsumoto, the film version will be helmed by Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed Ex Machina), scripted by Fukui Harutoshi and Marza Animation Planet will produce the animation. The total production cost is budgeted at $30 million, the most expensive ever in Toei Animation. You'll find the minute-long teaser embedded below....

Now this is a piece of news that brings a tear to an eye (and not ironically, sarcastically or in any bad way speaking) – the Japanese government announced anime director Hayao Miyazaki as one of this year’s 15 winners of the Person of Cultural Merit honor on Tuesday.
Hayao Miyazaki is best known for his animated films produced under Studio Ghibli, such as Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Ponyo. He is now deep in production of his latest work, an anime “with lots of airplanes” and a projected 2013 release date.
The Japanese government awards the cultural honor every November to people who contributed to Japanese culture for many years (something similar to an Award for lifetime achievement). The winners of The Order of Cultural Merit, highest order, are decorated by the Emperor himself in the Imperial Palace on November 3 — a national holiday called Cultural Day. This year’s...

I think Dan Almasy just made my Friday, and while it isn't a real member of Daft Punk underneath that impressive replica outfit, I give extra points for DeLoreans. Pretty cool concept for a photo shoot, and pretty geeky to incorporate the image of the guys behind the Tron soundtrack. Check out some more photos below and be sure to follow his name to see the full album! Before you do that though, check out the music videos off of their breakout album Discovery, which features the master artwork and production of Leiji Matsumoto, who created Space Battleship Yamato!

A first promo trailer for the CG anime based on Leiji Matsumoto’s Captain Harlock character screened during the International Animation Film Festival in Annecy (France). According to Catsuka, this film (which kinda reminds me of Final Fantasy and is supposed to open in 2013) may act as a pilot for a TV series telling the adventures of the famous Space Pirate, if it meets the financial expectations of the producers.

When Panasonic wanted to show off its latest 50-inch Full HD TVs at the Ceatec consumer electronics show, it enlisted the help of celebrated anime director Leiji Matsumoto (Space Battleship Yamato, Galaxy Express 999) and Exact 3D, a new dedicated production service.
Matsumoto created an animated short utilizing the suite of services Exact 3D designed to demonstrate the capabilities of the new high-end plasma TVs.
Exact 3D is now getting a global market launch, though a major Hollywood studio has already been using its services on a full-length, 3D-animated Japanese feature.
The suite of services is being offered jointly by Brosta TV and Japan Cable Television, both subsidiaries of TV Asahi Corp.
"The reason the two companies are involved is that Brosta TV has a lot of experience in producing anime, while Jctv has more experience in working with live action," said Masashi "Sho" Matsuhashi, a producer at Brosta TV.

Classic 70s anime series Space Battleship Yamato is coming to the big screen in an expensive-looking adaptation. Check out the trailer right here…

At the 2010 Tokyo International Anime Fair, the trailer to Space Pirate Captain Harlock was screened inside the Toei Animation booth and fortunately for us, a sneaky fellow has captured the footage on video camera and uploaded it online. The 4-minute pilot trailer was directed by Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed Ex Machina), characters designed by Yutaka Minowa (Ninja Scroll), written by Harutoshi Fukui (Mobile Suit Gundam Uc) and the animation was produced by Marza Animation Planet (formerly Sega Sammy Visual Entertainment). For those not familiar with the source material, its based on a space opera manga by Leiji Matsumoto which was then adapted into an anime series. I'll let Wikipedia explain the plot:
In the future, Mankind has achieved a vast starfaring civilization, but is slowly and steadily succumbing to ennui or despair, often due to defeat and subjugation by a foreign invader. Rising against the general apathy, Harlock denies defeat and...

Whoa, what a totally awesome way to kick off the New Year! The Japanese have been quietly developing a live-action adaptation of Leiji Matsumoto's anime series Space Battleship Yamato that first aired in the 1970s. You may not be familiar with the show, but you probably recognize the design of the spaceship in the anime. Well, director Takashi Yamazaki (Always - Sunset on Third Street) is currently shooting a live-action version of Space Battleship Yamato that kind of looks like Star Trek mixed with Japanese anime. Thanks to Nippon Cinema (via Quiet Earth) an early TV spot has landed online and it looks pretty frickin' awesome! As of this moment, Space Battleship Yamato (also known as Star Blazers when it was brought to the Us in the 80s), will hit theaters in Japan in December of 2010, about a year from now. The budget is around 2 billion yen (about $20 ...
