NBC News’ Andrea Mitchell, accepting a lifetime achievement award from the Women’s Media Center, said that there “was a lot left undone” for women in the news media, citing the situation in other countries and also in the United States.
“Now we have women executives at the highest levels in our news divisions and women proving their courage every day in Ukraine,” Mitchell said in her remarks to the group. “But there is a lot left undone for women here, and around the world, not just in China, but in Afghanistan, where women broadcasters, judges and teachers are being driven back into the Middle Ages by the Taliban. In Iran, where women are beaten and jailed and some, killed, for challenging the regime according to human rights advocates. Surely none of us who came of age in the 1960s thought that a right embraced by the Supreme Court nearly a...

For decade upon decade the remains of María Martín’s mother have lain beneath a roadway in Spain, her death unmarked except for her aging daughter’s lonely vigil. Cars pass indifferently across the route, a symbol of how the country paved over its history of brutal repression and political murder under the fascist regime of General Francisco Franco.
Why María Martín’s mother was killed–along with tens of thousands of others heaped in mass graves–and why Spain has resolutely refused to come to terms with this era of blood and torture, are the subject of the documentary The Silence of Others, shortlisted for the Academy Awards. Oscar-winning filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar executive-produced the documentary directed by Almudena Carracedo and her husband, Robert Bahar.
“What we wanted to do with the film was to be an instrument to open that conversation about forgetting, about our past, and also our present,...

European film funders warn EU from making “big bang” policy changes to copyright, authors call for fair remuneration
European film funders from 31 countries including the UK’s BFI, Germany’s Ffa and France’s Cnc have warned the European Union (EU) to avoid making any “big bang” policy changes to copyright rules.
The Association of the European Film Agency Directors (EFADs) issued a resolution today (March 17) declaring that it considered the current EU copyright framework to be “fit for purpose” as “it provides a strong basis for current business models to evolve in response to people’s changing preferences as to how they access films and other audiovisual works.”
The film agency directors suggested that “the priority of the EU should be the establishment of a level playing field ensuring equel treatment between all operators, a commitment to economic sustainability and engagement in the creation of local works.”

Elizabeth Taylor, Barry Bonds and Macaulay Culkin and other celebrities were among the mourners gathered on a hot, muggy Thursday night for Michael Jackson's funeral, slowly filling rows of white chairs placed outside the mausoleum where the King of Pop will be entombed.Jackson's family, including parents Joe and Katherine and the singer's three children, had yet to arrive as the planned 7 p.m. start of the service came and went. With temperatures hovering at an oppressive 90 degrees, black-garbed mourners used programs for the service at Forest Lawn Glendale to fan themselves as they sat and waited.A large, inflated light, the type used in film and television production, and a boom camera hovered over the seating area placed in front of the elaborate marble mausoleum. The equipment raised the possibility that the footage would be used for the Jackson concert documentary "This Is It."About 250 seats...
