- José Martí was born on January 28, 1853 in Havana, Cuba. He was a writer, known for Just Cause (1995), White Chicks (2004) and The Damned United (2009). He was married to Carmen Zayas Bazán. He died on May 19, 1895 in Palma Soriano, Cuba.

- During the final years of his life, he had become estranged from his wife, Carmen Zayas Bazán. During this period he met a young Venezuelan woman, Carmen Miyares de Mantilla, who ran a boarding house in New York City. It is alleged by many historians that during this time he fathered an illegitimate daughter named Maria Mantilla. Ms. Mantilla was the mother of actor Cesar Romero and Romero proudly claimed he was the grandson of Martí.
- The international airport in Havana is named after him (Aeropuerto Internacional José Martí / José Martí International Airport).
- Is the National Hero of the Republic of Cuba and also considered to be the country's Liberator. He died in battle against Spanish forces and never had a chance to see the island win its independence.
